Gothkill (2008 Video)

Most people need to skip this
23 January 2011
I'm sure this was a lot of fun to make and the people involved probably got a kick out of watching the finished production, but the rest of us could do with a warning up front: this is not even a 'B' movie.

This really is the kind of quality I associate with a decent high school production. Not a GOOD high school production, mind you .. just decent. It was extremely poorly acted with very amateur equipment and little attention to quality.

I watched it expecting to be entertained by a campy plot and a little action .. some blood, gore, and nudity hopefully .. but even those were in short supply.

Unless you're obsessed with the goth / metal-head subculture (or whatever), don't even watch this to satisfy your curiosity.

Suspenseful .. predictable ..
24 August 2009
An interesting story, though a little predictable.

The suspense was upheld throughout the movie, and there was real tension in many scenes, accomplished through a nerve-wracking score and drawn-out scenes that got my teeth grinding.

I immensely enjoyed the cinematography and effects .. it created a dark and brooding atmosphere that had me mourning the conclusion before it came about.

The acting was fairly good, no real complaints. I especially enjoyed the hotel concierge character, who added an old-school feel to the film.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed the movie, although I found the story to be almost too simple for its length; it felt like a short story stretched to fit a feature length film.

A genuine, heart-wrenching story
15 June 2009
This movie was very well put together. The characters came across with sincerity, delivered very well by (what appear to be) new actors.

I couldn't help but imagine this sort of story coming together, whether by terrible coincidence or by a nasty twist of fate - and it was truly a sad thing to envision.

I found the pace to be as expected for this sort of film, with plenty of time to understand the characters, and a healthy dose of dialog-free scenes full of introspection and character growth. I also really enjoyed the fact that the director respected his audience and didn't spell things out for his viewers.

Now, this is not a film I would recommend to most of my guy friends, as there is very little action and it is, after all, a love story - but I know the ladies would enjoy it thoroughly.

I want the last two hours of my life back
9 June 2009
This movie was utter crap from start to finish - no exaggeration.

There were at least a dozen prolonged scenes where I had little idea what was happening (I mean it, I couldn't even guess what the director was trying to show). There were disjoint images or sounds thrown into some scenes, seemingly to lend some emotion or atmosphere to the story, but it confused the heck out of me.

I LOVE this kind of story - global disaster strikes mankind, and a handful of survivors are left to pick up the pieces. I really dig the philosophical questions that get raised (and sometimes answered), and the strategies that the survivors come up with to continue living.

However, this movie had little of that - the story line, the characters, the script, the cinematography, the sound (seemingly recorded on one of those toy Mickey Mouse microphones) ... all of it was so glaringly cheap or badly done as to cause actual embarrassment in anyone watching it.

What can I say that is good about this movie? Well, there were a few moments when I thought it was actually going to pull through for me - the monster effects were really good in some scenes, and ... well, that's it really.

Don't watch this movie. Honestly, it really ISN'T one of those low budget movies that a minority appreciates in spite of the majority. It's just a waste of time.

Meh .. I've seen worse
27 May 2009
This movie is extremely low budget, so if that's not your thing, you should think twice before watching it.

The story was pretty weak and the zombies were a joke; they milled around so slowly that the protagonists were able to walk through them at times, striking out at any that ventured close enough. And yet, at other times, they were "pinned down" by a handful of them.

However, I enjoyed some of the music, and the characters were kind of endearing, so I ended up sticking with it to the end.

What can I say? If you have nothing better to do, this movie is not the WORST way to pass your time ..

The Perfect Mood
15 May 2009
I don't know about you, but when I sit down to watch a horror film, I don't expect to be blown away. My expectation is only to be engaged, kept in suspense, and hopefully scared out of my mind (this last one being of the rarest variety).

This movie lived up to my expectations in all the important ways. My curiosity was jump started in the first scene, and the somber, introspective mood of the story line, spiked with horrific scenarios and sickening plot twists, was exactly what I hoped.

The final twist was too easily guessed, of course, but it didn't take away from the finale - a powerfully emotional scene portrayed very convincingly by Dennis Quaid, who brought his usual energy and charisma to the role.

If you're looking for a quality horror flick or suspense thriller, this one is well worth your while!

Like a great conversation .. time really flies
4 April 2009
This was a fantastic story told through convincing conversation between intellectual peers. There's an aura of mysticism about it .. and you can't help but be caught up in the wonder and possibility that the story represents.

The acting was quite good, though maybe a little overdone at times. There were scenes where moods changed a bit too abruptly or unconvincingly, but I only say this in retrospect. At the time, I was too caught up in the conversation to notice it much.

Anyway - excellent movie. Anyone who appreciates philosophical conversation should definitely enjoy this.
