Mixed Nuts (1994)
7/10
Why the low rating?
7 November 2023
I have watched this movie several times over the years and it never gets old! It's another Steve Martin classic, plus has an all-star cast to boot. It's a quirky Nora Ephron movie with lots of oddball characters, which makes sense as to why it's called, "Mixed Nuts." If you're looking for something cerebral, you're looking for the wrong movie. But if you're looking for some cute, light-hearted holiday laughs... nailed it.

Plus, Liev Shrieber's (sp) character adds a fun little side, as does Adam Sandler's neighbor. Two actors that weren't too big when the movie came out, so they were perfect little gems in this.

Barbarian (2022)
7/10
Never heard of it, so glad my 10 year old told me about it!
12 September 2022
I don't know if the low-key advertising was intentional, but I knew nothing about this movie. My 10 year old knows I like horror and asked if I was going to see Barbarian. The name sounded like a Stallone/Arnold action flick, so I said no, but looked it up. Went the next night.

Did not disappoint as I had no expectations and knew nothing about it, lol.

It was such a cool premise! Of course you're constantly wondering which of this chick's naive decisions is going to seal her fate, but you have to keep watching as the story keeps switching up on you. There are laughs and there's a guy that's a giant douchebag (Justin Long) and it's pretty fun to watch what happens when people think they are better than everyone else.

Now every time I get naked I say "bay bee" to my husband. Makes for a great inside joke. I'm gonna start booping friends on the nose too.

Cute and fun!
7 September 2022
I laughed out loud multiple times. It was cleverly written, quirky, and a fun watch when you need something to pass the time. There were many recognizable faces, whether they had small parts or not, they worked together well.

Definitely better than a lot of the other streaming options lately. I didn't even know if I had Comedy Central, but apparently if you have Hulu Live, you do, so there ya go.

Also really liked the girl that played the lead (Eliza) and didn't realize she was the chick from the AT&T commercials. I'd like to see her in more stuff. Why is it so hard to get to the required number of words when I don't have anything left to say?

Glad I ignored the reviews.
4 September 2022
My daughter and I love going to horror movies together, so we wanted to see this. We almost didn't go because I read all the horrible reviews on here, but I'm glad I went. Aside from the fact that the lead guy is smoking hot, there were no boring points. Yes, it was predictable, but it was still fun. Many reviews also said everything was in the trailer. No it wasn't. Just go with an open mind and not expecting Bram Stoker material. The acting was good, the graphics were fine. Why so much hate? It's okay to enjoy a movie at face value and not because it is an Oscar contender. Did I mention the lead guy was sizzling hot?

Who thought this was a good idea??
21 March 2021
Why would the Roku channel choose this garbage as their first original series? The acting was SO BAD. The best acting was done by a 10 year old girl. At first I was almost confused that maybe I was missing something. But no... it was just that bad. I think the positive reviews on here must be from the actors' families in hopes there will be a second season.

This gem came out of nowhere!
16 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As I was watching this, I kept telling myself that it wouldn't have a happy ending because these days they don't want things to be predictable. I was so invested in this story because I'm a teacher and I have seen so many kids put back with parents when they shouldn't be- kids that have so much potential that never make it because the system fails them.

Anyway, I was already preparing myself to be angry at the ending. Then it was happy. I was happy. My favorite movie genre is horror. This got me in the feels.

Cheerleader Abduction (2020 TV Movie)

An actually good "cheerleader" movie!
8 December 2020
Most of Lifetime's cheerleader movies are pure garbage. The plot is recycled drivel and the acting is worse than normal. This was a refreshing change! The plot wasn't really that original, but the family dynamic was different. The girl that played the pregnant cheerleader (Jerni) was GREAT! I'm actually bummed to see she isn't set to be in any upcoming movies. I'd like to see her go far in her career.

Insult to Lifetime movies!
29 June 2020
I love Lifetime movies, but this one was hard to finish. The acting was SO BAD. The plot wasn't especially awful, but the acting ruined it. The house sitter, girlfriend and neighbor had to be "related" to the director somehow because they have no business in anything above a junior high play. Do not waste your time!

No plot and no ending.
24 April 2020
I generally gauge movies based on a scale where 3 is most Lifetime movies. So the fact that I gave this a 2 should tell you something.

None of the characters had personalities. There was no real plot aside from a woman going to be a governess for a girl in a creepy old mansion. Everything scared her. She screamed all the time. Nothing made sense- like why were certain things happening? There was no back story. I... just... can't understand what I just watched. And it ended abruptly after the 5000th time the lady screamed.

Duh, it's "unrealistic."
4 March 2020
I almost made the mistake of listening to the haters posting about how it was, etc. Fortunately it was over 6.0/10, so it passed my minimum criteria. I loved it! Of course it's not realistic, and I don't understand the haters who complained about that. (Were you okay with Harry Potter's invisibility cloak?) The storyline was great, they pulled off the invisibility aspect and I was invested in what was going to happen. It did leave me kind of second guessing myself at the end about what was a lie and what wasn't, but that doesn't bother me. It makes for good conversation!

Like watching a super-sized episode.
4 March 2020
If you like the show, this is pretty much an extended 90 minute episode. Aside from the challenges, they included random "punishments?" for each Joker and most of those were great. Some of the scripted scenes (like Murr's hotel rooms) were too cheesy, but the rest of the movie made up for it. I took my 14 year old daughter because she also likes the show. She enjoyed some of the parts that you'd only understand the joke if you watched every episode. There were about 20 people at the showing I went to and I heard lots of laughing.

I've seen better Lifetime movies.
2 June 2019
This movie was BORING. It was completely predictable (person hits their head and the rest of the movie is an alternate universe) and there was nothing that stood out. Usually Rebel and Adam are a hilarious duo, but their chemistry was not there this time. Paid 80¢ On Redbox and I still feel robbed. My husband fell asleep half way through.

Not worth the 80¢ rental fee.
29 April 2019
I was desperate for something to use my Redbox code on, so I chose this. I knew it had bad reviews, but figured it couldn't be THAT bad... I was so wrong! The plot changed after about 3/4 the movie. The main actress was awful. Tiffany Haddish was exceedingly vulgar and obnoxious. The guy in this movie was just stupid for taking this woman back that treated him like crap many times. It was a weak and pathetic story that should never have been made into a movie.

Great acting, bad plot...
24 March 2019
The acting was great all around, but that was the only thing saving this from being a total dud. The plot makes NO SENSE. I buy the concept of Get Out 5000 times more than this one. Don't even try to rack your brain for how it would be possible or why the twist made it even more confusing.

There were a couple funny lines. In the end, I'd rather it just ended without the final "explanation."

I thought I was being punked!

I couldn't even make it 5 minutes into this movie because the acting was so bad. I had to check several times to make sure it was an actual movie. I'm pretty forgiving about Lifetime movies, but this was even low for their standards. Yikes...

Slender Man (I) (2018)

Creepy, but dumb. The Ring without Samora.
10 August 2018
I love horror movies, so I am very generous when it comes to hoaky plots. This was too much. So if you google "slender man video" anyone in the world can watch it. But we are supposed to believe that law enforcement hasn't caught wind of this?

There is no background, there is no logic. What is slender man? Is he a shadow? Part tree? A tall skinny guy? Just accept that watching the video means you'll disappear or go crazy... yet again, all the teenagers in the world know about it, but no one else.

I have liked Joey King in the past, but she way overacted here. The girl who played Hallie did the best, but no one could save a plot that had more holes in it than a Vegas brothel.

So many moral questions!
25 June 2018
On the surface, it's about dinosaurs, but it really questions who the good guys are and who are the bad guys. It had me near tears a couple times and I had to remind myself dinosaurs aren't real.

It was two hours long, but impressively didn't drag. There was a bizarre storyline thrown in that wasn't really necessary, but again tied into the idea of morals and science versus nature. I thought it was better than the last one, but nothing beats the original Jurassic Park.

Oh, and we get a visit from Jeff Goldblum and Chris Pratt's mustache.

It's okay to laugh...
21 June 2018
I'm a teacher and I think this is funny. There are so many things that they say that I'm sure many teachers actually feel. The "politics" behind public education are shameful, and these ladies highlight some of those ideas. Is it the most realistic show- not by a mile- but that's why it's funny. It makes me think of Kids in the Hall or Baroness von Sketch Show.

Slightly better than a Lifetime movie
15 June 2018
Tom Hanks carried the entire movie of Cast Away. Shailene Woodley is no Tom Hanks. While I like the sweet, but sad story that it was based off of, the plot wasn't my problem. The hoarse scream-cries got old and I really didn't find her emotions to be that believable.

Wait, this isn't a comedy?
5 June 2018
This was a ball of laughs. My 12 year old daughter and I were rolling over the bad acting, horrible plot, ridiculous logic and complete lack of real drama.

I consider myself to be a Lifetime movie aficionado and even this one was hard to finish.

What's with all the movie snobs?
20 May 2018
Generally I refer to imdb scores before I see a movie and if it's under 6, I don't usually go. I made the exception here because I love Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone (who has an amaaaaazing cameo, lol.)

I'm glad I gave it the chance! I found the plot endearing, McCarthy's character very likable and there were many great supporting characters! (Lots of SNL alumni) In terms of funny, there was one scene that actually had me crying from laughter and another scene (restaurant) that had me wishing I could applaud in the middle of the movie. It was soooooo understandably awesome!

The only low points for me were the daughter's character- the actress was cute and sweet, but they didn't give her much substance and a completely unnecessary part that involves public speaking, that as a professor, I couldn't roll my eyes enough.

In summation, don't listen to the haters. This movie was a million times better than Tammy and was right up there with Identity Thief.

Always be polite to service workers!
7 May 2018
Moral of the story- if you're nice to people, they won't rob from you. But seriously- it actually goes to show that bad stuff tends to happen to good people. It's nice that the main character wanted so badly to help save this one person and I felt every ounce of his frustration when no one would take him seriously. It came down to a battle of wits that I'm pretty sure could never have happened if cell phones weren't invented.

It was a great movie- never a dull moment!

Sadly realistic for people with actual mental health issues.
22 April 2018
As someone with diagnosed mental illnesses, the most terrifying part of this movie is knowing how bad our mental healthcare system is in the U.S. The mentally ill are often treated like lepers who have less rights than everyone else. And so many psychiatrists feel all-knowing and think they can accurately diagnose someone after meeting them briefly.

For me, I think they should have kept it as a woman being wrongly hospitalized and mistreated. Throwing her stalker into the mix just made for a lot of nonsense that was too far fetched to give any credit to.

Interesting concept, acting was okay, plot had too many holes and it wasn't that entertaining.

A Quiet Place (2018)
7/10
Wasn't scary, but short enough to be interesting.
22 April 2018
Horror is my favorite genre, so I was pretty excited for A Quiet Place based on the previews and the actors involved.

I was disappointed for many reasons, but luckily the movie was "action-packed" enough to keep my interest throughout. Call me a buzzkill, but I have a hard time just blindly accepting what is being presented to me. When the movie ended, I had so many questions. I've even considered going back since my original rating and lowering it, but I feel like Emily Blunt's acting was redeeming enough to leave the rating as-is.

I went to this with my 12 year old daughter and we were both pretty baffled by why any people in their right mind would get pregnant knowing that babies can't be quiet. (Not a spoiler, it's in the commercials.) Just another thing I couldn't wrap my head around.

My low expectations were majorly exceeded!
22 April 2018
Raunchy humor and toilet humor are not my taste and I was afraid that was going to be a majority of the jokes in this movie. I was happy to find those were few and far between.

I'm guessing there were a lot of improvised lines and those were probably the best. It was nice to see Leslie Mann thrown in with two unlikely partners in crime. John Cena plays the same character in every movie, but he is given good costars to play off their strengths.

The cliche of losing one's virginity on prom night was a little tiresome, but luckily that cheesy yuckiness was overshadowed by unpredictable laughs. The Dad that wasn't John Cena and the daughter of John Cena were probably the highlights.
