Night of the Lepus (1972)
Peter Cottontail, This Ain't!
This was a late-night staple, when I was a kid. I remember many a late-night Friday night, seeing this come on. It's got a strong cast, really and that's probably what saves this film, although most critics and B film fans would still discourage any viewing of this film.
Think about it....would anyone honestly ever think about making a film with killer bunnies?! Granted, these are of a larger variety than most of us think about, but take something usually thought of as being, fluffy, timid and sweet and turning them into killers.....that's spooky! I'd have tossed the daughter of the two scientists to the rabbits right in the beginning, but that's my biggest complaint with this film.
If you have never seen this film, rent it, it's just enough fun, you won't feel cheated and might actually find yourself enjoying it...a lot!
Davey and Goliath (1960)
Saturday Morning Memories
Growing up, I have nothing but fond memories of this series. It was on early mornings every Saturday and occasionally, Sunday, too! Now, while this series was produced through the Luthern Church, I never remember feeling like any episode was 'preachy'. I was having too much fun watching Davey, Goliath and family and friends do things we all did, as kids.
I'm thrilled to see some of the episodes are available on DVD. I especially love the Christmas episode, but they are all worth watching, especially if you have fond memories of this series from your childhood.
Santa and the Three Bears (1970)
Christmas Innocence and a Classic
When most folks think of Christmas classics, Rudolph, Charlie Brown, the Grinch and Frosty, immediately come to mind, but here's an animated classic that deserves some attention, too.
You can immediately see and hear the Hanna-Barbera touch in this classic and the feel-good touches really push this over the top. I don't care how hard anyone would try, today, you simply cannot capture the innocence of these classic animated Christmas specials.
When a park ranger at Yellowstone explains what Christmas is all about, to two young bear cubs, he sets in motion their desire to stay awake and see Santa and enjoy their first Christmas. In the process, they push their Mom's patience to the limit, but with the ranger's help, they will do their best to see the wishes of the little cubs come true....if a blizzard on Christmas Eve doesn't disappoint everyone.
I love the animation of this classic and the majority of the tunes in the special...probably the last song is the only thing keeping this from garnering a solid ten from me.
Dragnet 1967: The Shooting Board (1967)
Friday Takes A Shot
I really enjoy this episode. As a rule, you see very few episodes from Dragnet where shots are fired, but this is one of those rare instances.
After an 18-hour shift, Friday and Gannon go their separate ways for a few hours sleep before a new day begins. Friday heads out after arriving home, to grab a pack of cigarettes, at the local Laundromat. Unfortunately, he finds that crime never stops and he surprises a suspect trying to empty a change machine.
Shots are fired and Friday finds himself facing a shooting board because of his actions. The story around the events is very well done as is the entire episode....recommended for any fans of Dragnet or any new-comers to the classic series.
Dragnet 1966 (1969)
This Is the Dragnet I Love!
I've only seen this film once before. Thanks to the recent DVD release of season two, this was included as a bonus feature and I re-visited this, today.
All I can say is, if you're a fan of the 60s series, you probably will find this film an easy watch. It takes the same route that the TV episodes do and simply expands upon them.
As any fan of the 60 TV series is aware of, Jack Webb was faithful to his friends and fellow actors and so familiar faces from the TV series, abound in this film.
Sure, by today's standards, this is not really a shocking and over-the-top effort, but the film is familiar and enjoyable and Webb and Morgan are really great as partners.
