Gangster No. 1 (2000)
Makes Gran Torino look good.
I thought Gran Torino was the worst film I'd ever seen based on awful acting, hilarious dialog and as a vehicle for a has been, but this film makes Gran Torino look like Ghandi. You know you are watching a bomb when you are laughing at a film that's not meant to be a comedy, as was the case with Gran Torino, but when you stop laughing and have the urge to cry, then you are watching Gangster No. 1. Malcolm McDowell has to be the worst actor that ever walked the earth. I would advise anyone who values a good script, a good screenplay, and most of all decent acting, to avoid this film like they would avoid a particularly noxious disease. I never thought I would see a film that makes Gran Torino look good, I've found it!
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Not depressing enough
I've just watched Dawn of the dead 2. Wonderful effects, fantastic action sequences, great soundtrack, but for some reason it seems so bloody cheerful. When you see the original DOTD, the effects are poor the make-up is amateurish and the soundtrack is crap. But the great thing about the original Dawn of the dead and other 1970s horror films is that they are so wonderfully depressing. There's no edge of your seat, fantastic, wham-bam action. But a morbid, nightmarish horror that leaves you with a sense of apocalyptic doom. I've not yet seen "land of the dead", but I hope George Romero hasn't resorted to special effects horror and stuck to his tried and trusted "end of the world" misery. I honestly believe that horror has lost the plot since the 1970s. It tries too much to entertain, I want to be miserable!
Tiswas (1974)
It was Tiswas and Magpie against Swap shop and Blue peter.
When I was at junior school in tne 70's the kids at the front of the class watched swap shop and blue peter, and the kids at the back of the class watched tiswas and magpie. Tiswas was far too good for kids on a saturday morning, a lot of it was beyond us. I always remember my dad used to sit with me and my sisters laughing more than we were. In the early eighties they tried to do an adult version called O.T.T, it was awful. Why make an adult version when the kids' version had the adults laughing more than the kids. I occasionally see kids t.v on a saturday morning, how much happier they'd be if they had the phantom flan flinger and Algernon Razzmatazz.
The Fabulous Dorseys (1947)
Great music, horrendous acting, beautiful woman.
I watched this film this afternoon and I am amazed that Janet Blair didn't become one of the great sex symbols of the era. It was only for this beautiful, sexy woman that made me stay with it, (plus the fabulous music). The script was dreadful, the acting (apart from Ms Blair), was embarrasing and the storyline was desperately dull. So in summary if an actress can make me stick like glue to a bomb of a movie like that, she must be something special. Surely we can at least have a headshot!
