Riddick (2013)
Avoid even if you liked Chronicles of Riddick
I can't say I'm a big fan of this franchise, but I still liked "Pitch Black" and "Chronicles of Riddick" (aweseome soundtrack). "Riddick" though is IMHO the movie to avoid, as it brings nothing new to the table. Honestly, when I look at it now, I have a feeling that the the facts important for the story development could be described in just one sentence... and maybe 1 minute long video. Maybe it's only me, but I expect more from the movie than just pretentious (to not say - silly) voice and shining eyes. And one-liners delivered by Vin in "Riddick" define new level of crap. When I heard what he had to say about the only representative of the women in the movie, then I simply couldn't believe - was he desperately trying to prove that he has a sexual attraction to an opposite sex? :) How pathetic!
The Mist (2007)
Superb horror movie with amazingly huge bunch of supporting actors
I must say that that it's probably the most dialog filled horror ever made, with so many supporting but distinctive and memorable roles that in my opinion it resembles more a well written play than a movie. I was surprised myself when I figured out that if I had to then I would be able to list at least a -teen if not more than 20 figures, which simply doesn't happen after watching a horror movie... and it's pretty unusual for any kind of a movie. I really think that this title is a kind of a masterpiece thanks to really terrifying plot and good acting. CGI sometimes didn't look that great but honestly - it doesn't matter at all. From the other hand, there are some very memorable scenes which you'll remember forever.
I didn't read the book, so can't tell if this adaptation is close or far from the original, but as a horror movie this is simply top league. And really... moving.
The Walking Dead (2010)
Huge disappointment
Long story short: you will get bored.
Spoilers warning! I think I can call myself a SF fan. I like reading SF books and generally I'm more than enthusiastic about new SF movies and TV series coming out, so I was more than happy to see it being broadcasted on Fox HD in Poland. But after watching 1st season I can honestly say, that to me this was one of the biggest disappointment ever. C'mon, zombies are not the greatest idea on this planet, but there's been a couple of great flicks covering this subject (Dawn of the Dead, original Resident Evil, Shawn of the Dead, Black Sheep) - this series is NOT like them. It's slow, lackluster, contains too deep character development which is rather unnecessary here (not to this extent), action is boring and plot is ridiculous. The most tense part of first season, the finale, might have brought a really interesting developments regarding the potential cooperation with other medical centers or at least could have unveiled more info about the scale of this plague and efforts done by US to defend against cold meat. Instead they have blown the whole laboratory out.
What are they planning to show in season 2 - sexual habits of zombies or problems related to zombie parenthood?
Stay away of it and do not waste your time. I hope they will change their attitude or cancel this show. I won't waste my time on season 2.
Defying Gravity (2009)
Too brilliant for Fox
In my opinion Fox decision about canceling this show was one of biggest failures in Fox' history. This series is not for everyone, agreed, but generally it seems to be an example of one of the most brilliant SF series existing. There is a lot of potential in the storyline, and characters and their interrelations have been developed so well and were so tense, that this could be a real cash-cow for Fox. It's kinda slow and contains a lot of retrospections, but the whole environment and no so bad technical background (ok, there've been some flaws like live video communication with the crew on Venus orbit - are you kidding me? :-) were to me a key which kept me tied to TV each Friday. Now, when it's gone, all I can say is: Fox decision was an idiotic act and shows that either Fox executives are dumb... or their main audience.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Pointless
A huge disappointment. I like all the actors playing there, but the movie as such was pointless to me. Script is dumb and not funny at all - to call it a comedy is a huge exaggeration . The story there lacks a soul, and good cast does not bring any rescue. The most dumb thing to me was that it was obvious that to hide the lack of any actual concept, they tried to cover it with obscure texts which simply did not work (and I'm not saying I'm against hard wording). The only funny thing to me was to spot out that the "rich man" was actually played by Tom Cruise, which I did not catch in first moment.
I'm not saying you should not see it, but be warned.
The Prophecy: Uprising (2005)
very good indeed!
Well, to say I'm surprised is the least. I didn't expect much, I was only hoping that the movie would not end up in a blood and gore with no sense - as many cheap (I was considering this movie as such - straight to video? what the hell?) flicks do. But was I finally saw surprised me a lot. I liked the idea, most of the plot, the climate and last but not least - the cast. Honestly, I really appreciate the cast, especially men who've played Dani and John (!). The latter actually looked like somebody "else". Anyway, I'd really recommend this movie to all fans of horror/mystery genre but not only to them. It's been my first contact with The Prophecy series and I might think about watching the previous 3 (?) parts... are they that good? 8/10 - absolutely!
Racing Stripes (2005)
C'mon, it's only a family flick - and a rather fine one
I'm rather against so called family movies 'cause I'm too old to like'm, but not old enough to have to watch'em. Anyway, I saw this movie at the hotel because there was nothing else to watch and I just want to say that this is movie is quite good (in its genre). Interesting (although kinda childish) story, well made effects, amazing "talking animals". We all know that such a thing like a zebra racing against horses couldn't happen but who cares. It's a cute portray of everybody's dreams about being someone better. And a doze of humor which's not even that bad (I really liked those talking flies) as in family movies. All in all - one of the best family flicks I've even seen. Kind of good to see a movie like this once a time ;))
I, Robot (2004)
Brilliant movie - true SF in a very good shape
I think that the movie is very underrated here. Perhaps was just way too difficult to understand for some of people watching it. Comments like "make me feel asleep" are just dumb and show only the attitude to the movie of the people who write these things. This is the hard SF in a very good shape. Could be better - right, I'd prefer more complicated plots - but still's been one of the best true SF movies in a long, long time. Congratulations to the makers of this gem! Definite buy for my collection.
BTW. Apart of a good CGI I'd give my recommendation for the soundtrack, too. I've never heard about the composer before (Marco Bletrami?) but now I'm going to dig in and look for his past works.
