Swarm (2023)
Not nearly as clever as people think it is
I don't understand all the rave reviews for Swarm. I am a HUGE horror fan AND a huge music junkie and I really wanted to love this show. The characters are completely uninteresting and plot is utterly monotonous. While the acting is pretty good I find the writing abysmal. I did chuckle at several parts but there isn't nearly enough humor to call this a clever satire. Comparisons to American Psycho is insulting to American Psycho which actually was a very funny clever satire. An obsessed fan goes around killing people with no rhyme or reason, they never seem to find any of the bodies, somehow she always find people who are drawn to her even though it's obvious she's mentally unbalanced. And does no one every find the bodies?? It seems she would have been easily caught after episode 1 and yet is able to continue the murderous rampage without any repercussions at all. Everything about the series seem utterly pointless to me which is so annoying because on paper I should love it...and I wanted to love it. But after every episode I ask myself "why do I bother watching this?"
The Sparks Brothers (2021)
Sparks finally get their due!
I was very curious how Edgar Wright would handle the documentary format. Turns out, with just as much style and creativity as all his other movies. Despite the long-ish run time and the obscure subject matter, this is a wonderfully engrossing documentary. But more than that, it's a great underdog story that makes you want to cheer at the end. Rarely am I compelled to watch credits until house lights came up at which point I clapped out loud. After 50 years in music business, Sparks finally get their due. So often docs celebrating artists happens after they're dead, but Sparks is still here doing their thing which makes it all that much more enjoyable. Brimming with music, humor and creative visuals, this is a fantastic movie!
Censor (2021)
A surreal indie horror gem.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! While is a great homage to the video nasty era in UK, the film itself is grounded more psychological horror. So much better than the polished and glossy "horror" peddled by big Hollywood studios. Subtle and surreal, this movie captures a wonderfully nightmarish quality that so many movies try but fail.
Saint Maud (2019)
Wonderfully creepy with great acting.
This isn't your typical horror movie, it's far more subtle and obscure. But there is a wonderful sense of creeping dread throughout and the film ends with a dramatic and horrifying event. I loved how the director handled this film. Great cinematography and acting made this a very compelling movie. It wasn't quite what I expected but I still found it very satisfying.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Completely ridiculous but totally fun!
This movie is pure escapism. I love it for that reason. I mean, seriously, it's 'Godzilla vs Kong'. If you expect an intricate plot and complex characters you're gonna be disappointed. Why would anyone expect that from Godzilla vs Kong? The plot is merely a device to get the two behemoths to cross paths, knock the crap out of each other and destroy cities. The story moves at a brisk pace and human drama is kept to a minimum, as it should be. This movie knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. The opening sequence had me chuckling and my inner 10yo smiled ear to ear for the rest of the movie. I don't want an inspiring plot, I want inspiring visuals, and that's exactly what is delivered. The battle scenes are spectacular, Hollow Earth was fantastically beautiful and a neon-lit Hong Kong being demolished was incredibly satisfying. This isn't high-brow art, you're not at the symphony, it's not Shakespeare. It's a wild thrill ride designed to make you smile, laugh, ooh and aah. That's exactly what I wanted and I loved it.
