Kaze tachinu (2013)
An extraordinary film
Studio Ghibli's 'The Wind Rises', is a powerful film. It manages to slowly inject the happenings under the viewer's skin with finesse. The pain felt by the characters at one point becomes very real, you can see the inevitable. But still you learn to hold on and stand your ground till the very end of the film. Do not mistake me. The film does not leave you feeling empty. It leaves you with a sense of elation. Rise form the sorrow, pull through the hardships and live. That's the end message of the film. A simple message, a simple story, but an extraordinary film. Miyazaki steps up his storytelling and once again very skillfully manages to reach out and touch many millions with his 'The Wind Rises'.
Nodame kantâbire (2006)
You will not be disappointed
'Nodame cantabile' is a series that will sweep you off your feet.
This is an anime that actually does not follow the drag pattern that a lot of other anime seem to follow. It's fresh, different and completely entertaining. The series is based on western classical music. I think the makers were really trying to help the ignorant modern audience see the brilliance of classical music. If that was their goal, I must say, they have achieved what they set out to achieve.
Sure the series is about the characters and the story. But as we progress through the episodes, it becomes more and more about the music. We find ourselves watching the episodes to listen to the music, while we follow the story.
I did not think it was really possible to give the 'cliffhanger' treatment to this kind of a story. It is genius. My advice would be, watch the first 12 episodes and stop, give it time to sink in, then go on to watching the rest.
I happened to come across the anime in one of my extensive web searches, when I frantically look for anime that actually make sense. I am so glad I decided to give this one a shot.
Arjun: The Warrior Prince (2012)
Good animation
I will give Arjuna only a 4/10, and the 4 is for actual effort they took to make a good piece of animation in this 'age' of bad animation (in India). The film starts off promisingly but loses track and strays off. The actual storytelling of the Mahabharata is flawed. The makers have tried to cramp way too much in one small film. It's almost like an overdose of information for those that actually don't know the tale. Also, at points, it is wrong information for those that don't know the original. The film ends so abruptly, the viewers don't know if they should still sit in front of the screens or move out.
As far as the animation is concerned, at many points the scenes look too flat. But there were even those scenes that left me completely spellbound, and they were the only reason I watched the entire film. The main characters are a good effort. But the secondary characters look and feel very seen-it-before.
My verdict would be, watch it only for the animation.
Last Exile (2003)
Average
'Last exile' is no extraordinary story. It a good story. The anime has well thought characters and some good episodes. If I were to rate the series in three parts and out of 10 -
The first few episodes would be - 8/10 | The episodes in the middle - 6/10 | The last few episodes - 4.5/10
So basically, the anime has a great start. An average middle and a sloppy ending. It felt to me like the makers were in some kind of an hurry to finish off the story. There are many, many loose ends. Too many important characters dying and too many unnecessary love connections made. Whereas the main romances are left high and dry. As a viewer I felt empty in the end. Like some major part of the story was 'missing'.
This series will, for sure, not be 'remembered'.
So, watch it but don't expect satisfaction.
Resurrecting the Champ (2007)
Don't go by the 'stars' watch the film for yourself
This is one of those films, that have a lot to offer but are lost somewhere under the overpowering dazzle of films with breath-taking special effects and cutting-edge action. 'Resurrecting the Champ' is a film that stands there silently, waiting for someone to notice.
Leaving all the facts aside, I saw the film, only as a film. I did not watch it to weigh the truth of the story. I watched it to watch a film and ended up watching a film that was worth every minute of my time and attention.
Its great story and remarkable acting in all pack a fantastic 'punch'. The story twists in the most unimaginable way. At first you disagree with this 'twist', then, like the protagonist, you are left with no choice but to agree with what's being played out in front of you. You, stand alongside the protagonist to accept the faults and make a change that's here to stay.
Angel Beats! (2010)
Average
Honestly, I think this anime had a good concept. The story could have been much, much better. It was draggy and boring in some places, and too soppy in the others.
I personally feel, a story should not force you to shed tears. A story should help you shed tears. I felt that the emotion in 'Angel Beats' was too imposed, like the makers wanted you to feel in a certain way. For me, it was just fake. It took away from the entire series, and i watched it only so I could finish it.
As far as I can remember, I felt the character's sorrow/joy only in two episodes. Once when Yuki disappears and the other when Yuzuru dies. Otherwise the amine was pretty tasteless.
Somehow, I did not/ could not connect. It was good in bits, but as a whole it did not quite make it.
Monster (2004)
Stunning
I must say, this anime is a masterpiece. The story is well crafted and all the elements of the plot are beautifully interwoven. As the series progresses and everything falls into place, the horrific tragedy surfaces to leave the viewer speechless.
I managed to finish the series over a period of three days. Personally, I thought that it was a bit too stretched. If I had to wait for a week for another episode to be telecast, I would have lost interest somewhere near the 10-15th episode. But, I'm glad i did not have to pull through the wait. I would have really missed out on something extraordinary.
My Suggestion, hang in there, and pull through some of the unnecessary stuff and you will truly be rewarded.
