Mayfair Witches (2023)
Boring, no witchcraft, no chemistry, and no real plot.
I can't believe how stupid this show is in comparison to Interview With The Vampire. I'm not familiar with the Mayfair books the way I am with Interview, so this is written based on the show.
Rowan is tragically boring. The only witchcraft in this show is her giving people aneurisms I guess. After the death of her adopted mom and 2 dead medical providers she worked with, (She's somehow a surgeon at age 25) she heads to her birthplace to find out... well I don't know what she wants to finds out, besides who her biological mother is. Once she finds her, the plot turns into a jumbled mess. There's a black man helping her & he's her assigned protector. Rowan is a stand in for the audience but he's not teaching her or explaining ANYTHING to her/us. She meets the rest of the family but they aren't teaching us either. Worst of all, they don't do any magic either, outside of a few chants here and there. I guess they're a coven but it's never really any information offered on what they want in this situation.
So Rowan wants to get rid of this ghostly devil Lasher that follows her around, but WHY?!? Why is she so adamant about not wanting him around. If I were her, I'd love to have the source of my power by my side. Rowan and her handler talk as if he's so bad for her but it's not clear why he's actually a villain.
I've seen Alexandra D in several other acting roles and she's usually fine. Not grand, but not bad either. Here, she's abysmal. She's all meek and timid and not at all confident (even tho she's a surgeon....right). She also walks with this weird hard bounce that causes her boobs to shake up and down. It's SO off putting. Hard to describe- you have to see it. Like a baby giraffe learning to walk and stumbling it's way around and not used to it's neck yet. And look, I'm a proud feminist and owner of boobs too, but it's jarring to see. I had to write about it because it's painfully distracting!
Anyways, I just don't understand her characters motivations or her end goals. There are other people in the show, but good luck trying to figure out what purpose they serve. She has a rich eccentric uncle but his motivation is easily the most unclear. He's charming sure, but he's always undermining the rest of his family and the coven, but we don't know who he's loyal to, why he's so secretive, who's side he's on, or even what he wants. He's just there to be the opposition to...well I don't know who. Because they DON'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING!
I just finished the penultimate episode and I'm just as confused as I was in episode 1. There's a side plot (or main plot- who knows!) about a teenager named Tessa who invited the devil ghost man Lasher into her. She gets kidnapped by redneck witch hunters and don't worry, you won't feel any tension or fear for her safety. Rowan stomps in boobs jiggling from how hard she stomps, and gives out more aneurysms bc it's her only power, and it's the worst rescue I've ever seen lol.
Maybe I'll find out what the show is about in the last episode but I don't care . The show is stupid. As stupid as my review is because of the lack of coherence in the show!
Home Sweet HomeGoods (2021)
What even is this?
Maybe it's a promotional thing presented by Homegoods. Surely it's not a real show?? Well anyways, some of the actors are people who I enjoy seeing their performances like Bruce! He's good As well as the brunette lady who works there. Even the black lady who I've never seen in anything else impressed me even tho none of these people are working with good writing. The lead actress is usually better and funnier. This is literally the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I enjoy stupid content, but this thing in particular... the premise is unforgivable. Maybe I just don't get it comedic wise. I hate it. Thank goodness I only wasted 25 minutes or so. However, PLEASE put Jillian & the black lady in a real tv show together. I think they make a good comedic team. A younger Grace & Frankie type show. Make that happen instead of this garbage.
Unpregnant (2020)
It's definitely ABC Family quality
This movie could have been fun coming of age story that a lot of young women can relate to. I'm totally fine with the subject matter and I'm always happy to see content that explores these types of storylines since they are real life circumstances that girls in every generation go through. My positive aspect is that I appreciate the dilemma of teenagers navigating their way through this situation and seeing the dumb decisions they make seem on brand for all teenagers!! We've all done stupid things without thinking it through (such as stealing your mom's boyfriends car, or taking rides from complete strangers). There were some semi funny lines that made me chuckle a bit I suppose.
However the movie feels super ridiculous at times. The Christians who oppose abortions are framed as psycho killer in the movies type of vibe and it doesn't work. Then the bus stop with the limo driver who is there so the movies climax can happen. Their fake argument could have been more of an emotional beat but the tone doesn't match the movie. One storms off only to be found in the very next scene. And in that scene is another emotional beat that does not match the flow of the movie whatsoever!
I think this movie suffers from a split personality. The fun and spunky portions aren't all that fun or funny. It's the same stuff we see in every teen pregnancy drama w/ nonsensical lines, reactions, and barely decent acting.
This is a background movie and it feels like an amateur wrote & directed it- which is TOTALLY fine! Gotta start somewhere! It's not a terrible movie, but it's worth it if nothing else is on.
Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens: Pilot (2020)
Not at all funny.
I really don't wanna be mean because I support Awkwafina as an Asian woman Of color making moves in American media where Asians are heavily under represented. I love supporting women as black woman myself I understand the need for representation. However, these jokes are wildly stereotypical- & not in a cultural way. They are jokes we've seen 1 million times and so the show didn't feel original. The first episode is 20 min & she went from living at home, living with a friend, burning down said friends home, living in her car, & back to home. Intertwined with this scenario were many jokes that just fell flat. Idk, maybe it's my taste but the show felt like it was written by someone writing for the first time ever. It wasn't cohesive and I didn't even laugh in my head. More like, "oh that was the joke. Ok"
I'm rooting for you Awkwafina & I watched the first episode bc it came on as a YouTube ad. Maybe the next few episodes will improve but first impression was that the comedy here was dull.
