Doctor Who: Kill the Moon (2014)
The President is a woman
I adore the darker doctor, he could even be a bit darker for my taste. But this episode is just terrible. The moon is an egg, that somehow determines the course of human history which has to be decided by a group of random females (one is a black girl, cause diversity is obligatory...). After the companion makes the choice and is being "empowered" to put it in feminist terms, she complains about actually getting to make the decision. And then the episode ends with some more of that awkward and forced relationship the companions needs to have every season now, mostly with some dog-like weakling that follows the companion around and saves her without being an evil chauvinistic hero-type. Oh, and did I mention the President of the United States is a woman in 2049?
Also, the moon is full of spiders it seems and you get internet there with your iPhone to post pictures of the doctor.
Amy Schumer: The Leather Special (2017)
Vulgar, childish and unfunny
This woman seems obsessed with her private parts. Overall the show is vulgar (even for an American comedian) and that in a childish way. There is no story arc, the jokes are badly crafted and seem to center around boring and overused female tropes. The self-deprecating attitude seems fake where it needs to be genuine and actually sad where it needs to be a funny act. Comedy shows should be foremost judged by how much they make you laugh, which would result in a score of zero. Also I simply do not understand when it came to be acceptable and/or funny to describe one's sex life in detail. Just stay away and go watch Louis CK.
The Big Bang Theory: The Romance Recalibration (2017)
The show no longer cares
somewhere in season 4 i started to think that the show never took their own characters serious and therefore, under the pretense of "character growth" they drifted so far away from what was once the core of them that they all are now just some random sitcom stereotypes (the lazy husband, regular emotions and American style relationships, even Sheldon is now just some regular guy in a 20min conflict/argument in a boring sitcom relationship. This episode in particular was again terrible with these issues: it's all babies and relationships and frankly, no reason to watch except that "one is used to it". The show is now more like a soap opera with bad jokes and a laugh track, nothing of the wit and the freshness of the first seasons. If you had to summarize the entire show it would be something like this: being nerdy and scientists is just a terrible phase of your youth which you will grow out of and settle in some boring average life with some blonde waitress. if the creators don't care about it, why should i?
Iliza Shlesinger: Confirmed Kills (2016)
Unfunny, pseudo-feminist Agony
It seems she burned down really fast after the last one, which was more enjoyable. But now its real agony, void of jokes and filled with stale and preachy feminism. "All women should love their bodies and are perfect, being oppressed by insecurities dictated by the media", that type of thing. The structure of the bits is lacking or unoriginal and there is no real narrative that would feed jokes or interesting callbacks. If any, they refer to the last special. The whole torture is garnished with thinly veiled self-congratulation by the comic. Not even low-brow pandering by utilizing cheap American patriotism was left out (" i love America, being American, the army keeps us save" and such American tropes) Watching it is quite pointless.. Better go re-watch Louis CK.
Mad Men: New Business (2015)
Could've been good
It surely had potential. Diana trying all those roles the former women in Dons life (except Betty who is again one of a kind for Don).
And the angle of the old things becoming "new business" again was surely promising.
But I dare say that the episode didn't deliver on any of its topics.
AND THE THING WITH THE MILLION DOLLAR CHEQUE IS SIMPLY STUPID AND FORCED.
Especially when you consider Dons humble upbringing.
I surely hope the rest of the season (aka the series finale) will improve drastically as "Waterloo" has indicated.
Lie to Me (2009)
Follow the traces of HOUSE MD, but with results.
(corrections of English welcome)
Dr. Lightman is a specialist for facial expressions and psychological manifestations. After the first couple of episodes he is established as a misanthropic truth-loving scientist which is obsessed with his field. You may think you know the setting from somewhere, you are right. This show would not have been possible without the groundbreaking antihero Gregory House. But the obvious parallels mentioned, it doesn't diminish the show in any way. Far more i'm thankful for a new generation of TV shows and heroes coming up. Tim Roth, known to me and other cineasts for excellent but yet independent to underestimated movies plays the character superb and is getting better and better. His sidekicks seem a bit colorless and average. Where we get to the negatives: the show tries deliberately to achieve a high aesthetic quality which, in a way contradicts the House paradigm of the the lonely ragged genius and halts the show from developing a unique visual style. THen the show is in many ways very conventional and very American, especially in choosing cases which are not to be translated to Europe: army, religious fanatics etc. And unlike House it doesn't really evolve throughout the first season and starts to feel always the same. Nevertheless i would recommend this show as it is more intelligent than most of the other stuff we have the doubtable joy of getting imported from USA. Watch it.
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
terrible, really terrible
this film is terrible in every aspect. The count has no charisma, the Plot is false and an offence to the book. The European Adaptions are better like the sun is better than a spark.
