Captain Phillips (2013)
It was just too real.
While going to watch a movie, I didn't have any clue what was it about. But having Tom Hanks in a main part was already a big expectation. Believe it or not, but I found the movie (even difficult to call it just a movie)one of the best for a very long period of time. The action, the people, the characters, the story itself made me cry, tremble, co-live it! It was just a play of 7 people in general and they got me till the bones. I forgot I was in a theater. I was there, with them, frightened and nervous, willing to survive. Amazing picture. People around the world should watch it not only for pleasure but for awareness. Well done.
Educazione siberiana (2013)
The principles. Trust. Love. Siberia.
Many of us do not have any other image of Siberia except for the deserted snowy forests, wolves and -40C. The people live there. And people used to be deported by soviet government for disobedience. Their skin is thicker and their life is tougher. They "fight it" and they protect it against the police and government.
The movie shows us a great understanding of "honest criminal" and the importance of following the principles. The principles of friendship, business, survival.
John Malkovich with his Slavic roots couldn't be better as a grandfather Kuzya. All the crew is an amazing team of English speakers having Russian accent.
The film is shown as a big reality show between 1985-1995 soviet years, with no secrets. Harsh and bloody in some parts, it smooths the feelings by the end.
An honest interpretation, full of actual symbols of the Siberian people of that age.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)
Seriously?
No.. Seriously? Was it supposed to be an entertaining evening with Jim Carry as funny character? Well, surely he was something opposite which made me cover my face couple of times during the movie. Picture about magicians or masochism? Certainly it's confusing when you are in the middle of masochistic scene trying to understand what the hell were you doing in cinema that moment? I used to perceive cinema as something educational or at least entertaining. This movie didn't make me laugh, nor taught me anything and even worse - I felt disgust towards cinematography. Being a great fan of cinema, i questioned myself "What happened to it?". It's rolling down the stairs year after year.. I demand and request good quality movies! And please, get Steve Buscemi out of this kind
Django Unchained (2012)
Blows out your brains.... as well as the characters'.
As expected - tons of tomato juice on the walls, faces and... brilliant music as a background.. apparently to make you suffer less.
Tarantino getting older but his vivid mind never dies. Picture is bright, characters are splendid, music is in very Tarantino-style. Albeit, story is vague and somehow doesn't teach anything. Happy ending?
In some way one does expect it from him, but what surprises me more is how directors can't manage movies of less than 2 hours nowadays? Why does movie should be of 2h45mins? Can't one tell the story in a shorter way?..
Despite it's duration, movie goes smoothly.
Facts of the past make you suffer in the cinema chair, bluntness of the scenes makes you turn away and drain you out in the end, but that was it - the history of mankind. We can't turn away from the truth.
On the Road (2012)
Haven't read the book yet. But inspired enough after good movie.
It is a well-known fact that after reading a book, try to avoid watching a movie - it goes without saying, a good amount of great books lost their juice in a picture imagined by someone else than you. However, I still haven't had a chance of grabbing a book and swallow it with all the characters, relishing. But before that I couldn't stand from throwing myself into theater for a delightful 2hrs story about traveling and road. Well. It is indeed a story of traveling and road. Fascinating, absorbing, filthy, loving and ..weedy. The amount of weed smoked in the movie is massive. But it was just perfectly fit into the movie's mood. Just perfect. On the other hand, Steve Buscemi was sort of a sudden outrageous flash that blinded and left. Didn't expect. But well done, old man! Movie is swallowed easily and as one tasty piece. Nevertheless, after watching, Beat crosses your mind with the same old William Burroughs in shot and a sexy young lady involved. Loads of booze, jazz, free life, free love and all comes eventually to an end. The end which transforms into apparently even a better book.
