Hasn't aged well
8 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like you always hear about this one. It happened to be on TV so I gave it a watch. Obviously I didn't grow up with it so it doesn't have that endearing / nostalgic factor for me.

Casting choices aside.... The pacing was strange especially towards the end. Maria seemed way too eager to elope with the man who just killed her brother, I don't know. I don't think she even asked for an explanation.

I did appreciate the blend between theatre and cinema, that at least was creatively done. It was long yes but I think if the pacing had been better it wouldn't have been as noticeable. I don't mind longer movies if the time is used well. But overall this was a lot more depressing and drawn out than I expected it to be and honestly I don't ever want to watch it again.

One Piece (2023– )

Great intro to One Piece for newcomers
13 September 2023
I had a lot of fun watching this adaptation. I have some basic knowledge of the crew but otherwise I never got into One Piece way back when it first started airing, and the thought of diving into this series has always felt overwhelming to me because of how long it is. Netflix's One Piece really surprised me and now I want to start reading the manga to explore more of this world. I know One Piece is incredibly popular and well loved and I'm starting to understand why.

I'm also glad to see that a real effort was made to create a worthy live-action adaptation. Hopefully One Piece will set a new standard for future anime adaptations.

Sure it was not perfect, the pacing did feel rushed at times and some of the cgi could have been better. But, there wasn't anything about it that took away from my experience. I loved the cast and I was hooked from start to finish. If anyone is considering checking it out I would say it's definitely worth a watch. As a newcomer myself I'm looking forward to Season 2 as well as finally reading the manga, perhaps even giving the anime a watch as well if I have the time.

Better than expected
19 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The way this movie was advertised was NOT drawing me in, to be honest it looked awfully unoriginal and predictable. However the animation was so beautiful I knew that I would have to give this movie a shot. And I'm really glad I did.

(mild spoilers) I enjoyed the plot, and while there were some plot holes and moments that made me question decisions the characters made (mainly regarding fixing the leak in the city), I was invested in the movie the whole time. I loved the gradual progression of Ember and Wade's relationship. The way the scene of the two of the them finally touching and embracing was animated was so well done and much more intimate than I was expecting. I honestly want to go see it again just for that scene and that moment Wade says, "I'm so lucky."

I think a lot of people will enjoy Ember's character, from her personal growth to her relationships with her father and Wade. I recommend seeing this, in theatres if you can. I could tell my theatre was happy with the movie, kids and parents were smiling and laughing and having a good time.

Trigger can't be stopped.
7 June 2023
This series is perfect. I'm obsessed. What did we do to deserve Studio Trigger??

I suggest watching this anime knowing as little about it as possible. Don't even watch the trailer. Even when I recommend it to people to watch I try to give as little information as I can because I don't want to ruin or spoil the slightest detail.

If you've enjoyed a single thing Trigger has done you will definitely enjoy Cyberpunk Edgerunners. It's tight at just 10 episodes and it leaves you wanting more. Trigger is in complete control of the animation, the tone, everything. Why are you still sitting here reading reviews when you could be experiencing this anime??

TL;DR 11/10.

The Little Mermaid (I) (2023)
2/10
Uninspired, disappointing.
31 May 2023
I saw this movie openining night. I have always loved The Little Mermaid and I was really holding out hopes that this one would surprise me in a good way.

Unfortunately it's as bland and unmagical as the other recent live action remakes. There is no color, no heart, no care in this movie. It's an insult to the original and it does nothing new or fresh to define itself. The things it does try to do new, are at complete odds with its own worldbuilding.

I enjoyed Sebastian and Ursula, but overall I regretted going to see this. I have never walked out of a movie before, but this one tempted me to leave multiple times.

People were checking their phones. Children were talking and wandering around the theatre. What else do you need to know that this movie was downright boring?

There's no excuse for such sloppy movies. And yet here we are, once again, with another boring remake. I honestly never want to watch this movie again. The reviewers aren't being harsh or unfair. This movie was legitimately bad.

Why did they even make this??
2 May 2023
I really wanted to enjoy this movie and I had a small bit of hope that it might surprise me, but it did not. It was thoroughly boring, uninspired, and depressing.

There was nothing magical or special about Neverland. None of the characters had any facial expressions or emotions or personality. I don't think I can even say that any character arcs occurred. The special effects were dull. The choreography was downright horrible. Everything was just completely, utterly bland.

Hook was the only character who was somewhat interesting and likable, but that is not saying much compared to the rest of the cast, and there was only so much he could do to carry this movie.

I honestly don't know why they made this movie. I regret wasting my time watching it. I never felt absorbed and I wanted to turn it off multiple times because it was just that boring. I could sit here for an hour picking this movie apart but at this point I'm just tired. My only relief is that I didn't waste my time going to a theatre to watch this.

Trigger continues to outdo itself
20 September 2019
Let's be real. We came for Trigger. For over-the-top anime nonsense. For incredible and wild animation. For their one-of-a-kind music. For the Kamina protag.

With Trigger you know what you want, and they give you all they've got. I was so happy with Promare. It was upbeat and fun and didn't try to overcomplicate things. Would love to see this movie as a series so that more characters and plot points could be fleshed out, but as a standalone movie it's great entertainment and I'm already looking forward to watching it again. Fans of Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill will surely enjoy this burst of animation.

Step backwards from first movie...
13 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film was weird and uncomfortable. It was a huge step backwards from the first film.

In the first Wreck-It-Ralph, there is a scene in which Ralph destroys the race car he and Vanellope built together, in what he saw as a way to try to protect her. It was emotional and powerful and tear-jerking. After Ralph realizes what he's done, the rest of the movie is spent wrapping up their character development and solidifying their friendship. In Ralph Breaks the Internet, there is nothing of the sort. Everything felt forced and rushed. There is no heart. Ralph and Vanellope feel like completely different characters who didn't spend an entire previous movie establishing character development.

I would have preferred to watch a film focused to their "six years" of being best friends and goofing off around the arcade, which they only briefly touch on at the beginning. Instead the movie skips that timeframe and we are jerked forward to the point AFTER all that has occurred. Vanellope is horrendously bored with her life and essentially her friendship with Ralph too. I will never not be baffled that this was the plot they decided to explore for the sequel. It was depressing to watch, to be honest.
