Cloud Atlas (2012)
Totally unexpected and awesome
I didn't see the movie on the big screen, so when it came out on BlueRay I had, apart from some comments here and there about how unusual it is, no idea what i was about to expect, except that it wasn't devoid of action, what convinced me that i wouldn't totally waste my time.
What i got was not what i expected and surpassed my expectations manifold. The last time i remember seeing Halle Berry was in a Bond movie and the impression she left was shallow. Oh joy, oh surprise, the woman is in fact an incredible actress. But while she was the most positive surprise in the cast, i found the other cast members to be just as good.
The story is something special and to, at least mainstream cinema, very unique and beautifully crafted. I am not going to spoil anything, but weaving different strings of events in different periods of time into one coherent narrative that is enjoyable to watch and still not so simplistic that one can see the end from the beginning is something that is very rare in modern cinema.
many thanks to the people involved for making this movie, there actually is some new unexpected stuff in times of economic insecurity.
Vanishing on 7th Street (2010)
decent work. almost
I really fancied the movie while watching it, the characters were halfway believable and though the movie only touched their surface and almost immediately confronted me with the ever present stereotypes (boy who does not think twice about the gravity of his actions during a life threatening situation, its-all-the-lords-will-perhaps, et cetera) they were enjoyable.
now the movie should really have ended with Luke leaving after the boy could not resist running into the church. or perhaps after crashing a car through the front gate. but noooo. we have to make sure that this halfway decent movie which is lacking ANY explanation WHATSOEVER for the mother Theresa complex of its characters ends up in the eternal hall of glorious screw ups by making the ONLY character who displayed a certain consistency and appreciation for the gift of life by needlessly sacrificing himself.
if anything, THAT is a major screw up.
Tekken (2010)
bad publicity
The only thing the movie and the beat'em up series have in common are names. This movie is bad and unentertaining to the core. It sure does have a few good looking women in it, but that is about it. Cheap dialogs, bad acting and worse fight scenes, the thing a movie adaption of Tekken should possibly be about. Each Tekken character in the game has signature moves and a certain style, which the movie attempts show, but fails horribly. The characters do not have any depth, being stereotypes at the most, but fitting perfectly in a scenario glued together from bad cliché. Though i acknowledge that it is basic stuff that makes the world go round and the heart of the audience beat, THIS is not IT.
I do not think this is what the Iron Fist series deserves, if you are a fan, spare yourself the agony watching it.
i gave it 3 out of 10, because i saw a lot of movies in my time and this is like the saying "E for effort".
