Finch (2021)
well, excellent acting, but...
But good acting, can't save every turd from smelling bad. I'm not having any problem with a road movie, or an post apocalyptic theme. But in practical terms I'm finding hard to swallow some practical goofs that got the whole thing less believable to me.
Spoilers ahead
First; the robot is acting too much like pinnocchio, much less like an Ai, what it should be. It's clearly got some of its looks from an Chappie, but compared to that (when super advanced company produced it) it's less convincing one man would be able to build such an advanced robot. (On the whole earth today, only general dynamics with darpa funding are somewhat capable of prooducing robots that have convincing movement, but not Ai, and not independent from constant (every 15 minutes) recharging.
-speaking of that; what is the robot's energy source? How come Hank/finch was startled with robots strength, if he constructed it? (and no, that strength is not easy to make, so it can't be that strong by accident). Exposing wires and gears is also very unpractical in the real world. Even clothing of some kind would serve some protection.
-UV radiation would result in skin cancer, You don't cough blood from it. It's not tuberculosis. Coughing as a sign of "deadly disease" is really beyond cliche at this point.
-You don't loot a store from a customer area. Stores have warehouse for reserves. There is far more likely food would be found in warehoses and civil houses. And there would be really much less reason to leave shelter is knowing that and making stash in a first place.
-if electronic get fried (and presumably only the one in underground facility remains functional) from where did they get forecast? And since they are getting forecats, how come he did not seen it comming and prepared in the first place?
- if the earth got struck with the gamma ray burst, it's not a solar flare. These are really energy and source wise, very different events. Either way, satellites might got fried, but if gamma ray fried our ozone layer and kill plant life, there wold not be for much longer enough oxygen to freely breathe. But GRB is lasting merely a few seconds. So if it's close enough, it will mostly change atmosphere through making ozone killing NOX, that would in turn block some of the sunlight, but let the UV light through. So consequently - it would actually be colder weather, not hotter. On the other hand, this molecules would last only a couple of years. So yeah, it would be a mass extinction event, but the shaded part of the earth might get spared and replenish the ozone, and also people wouldn't immediately gone into a madmax frenzy. But I get it, postapocalypse is a must. It can just all be avoided by contacting any astrophysicist or planetary geologist, and work around it. As well as the robot thing. As well as the fact how would finch got his UV radiation sickness if he walked in protective suit, or lived in shelter, and is an scientist... it's not like he would be some clueless redneck in a wild. But well, we got some robot and the dog theme suitable for a short in "love sex and robots".
Black Widow (2021)
Bland cgi action girl powa
It's pity to realize this is more lame than The Falcon and the Winter soldier, and they are at least (i think) way cheaper to make.
How does someone escape from government in an old cessna? And how does someone "disappear from the radar" by having floating fortress in the sky? Never heard of satellite surveillance, in a marvel universe that share space with ironman's stark industries, iron fist's Rand Enterprises, various government, including wakanda, shield, and sword? And how would it hover? By these lame propellers that supermom finishes with one hit from a gun? How would they bring fuel for this (undetected?) Wouldn't be more "stealth" way be hidden in an ocean or something? Apart from the premise, lame plot devices/gubers that are not explained, giving hundreds of millions of dollars to clearly incompetent no name director just because she is a wahmen? Also giving screenwriting to other wahmen of similar "experience" that don't bother not with reading comics, but perhaps even former movies that featured main antagonist, for nothing more than bland action flick like charlies angels... only male characters are 3: incopetent fake father (despite being actual supersoldier he's just a joke relief), sleepy arms dealer, and generic bad ruskie villain. This is new low for marvel, and it's sad, since Black Widow used to be interesting character. Whole marvel phase is wearing off. Maybe, some tv show keeps them afloat, but movies like this... don't think so.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
nice action, unconvincing practice
The movie has its regular action packed sf "alien invasion" trope pretty fine, mixed with terminator back into the future but it eventually falls in the same unrealistic situation of mindless insect/horror alien huntpack foes right out of the Doom fps games. Just like in quiet place, battle los angeles, or even cloverfield and to some extent edge of tommorow (although they are having some sf time jump aid) there is no logic in having relatively stupid naked aliens arrive on earth like locust swarm. No barenaked alien would stand a chance against modern armored military and modern weaponry on disposal. Unless they arrive in like 20 billion at once, they would be easily eradicated with even conventional weapons. Bunker buster bombs would deal pretty easily with any "female queen hive" or whatever. There wouldn't even be need for infantry. Even Phosphorous bombs from WW2 would do the job. And only US has so many tanks, that they would be pretty fine with this kind of enemy. No soldier would blink twice on ugly monster insect. In fact everyone would be pleased not to kill fellow human. The whole thing of killing each other in the wars is dehumanizing the other side to justify killing. If the enemy already look like this game monsters, well, it's bonanza for any military in the world. Real aliens that were capable to reach us, would most probably be so advanced, we would be utterly hopeless. They would, if they want us down, probably just release some ionizing radiation or heavy neutrino/black matter beam that would set us all off instantly. But, yeah, that would be a short movie.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Oh c'mon!
Just because this has excellent actors/actresses and death serious depressive drama we should all get out of our mind in praising the show because they know how to make serious and depressive face, argue, act drunk, or having constant hangover? What about the actual story? Every witness is an idiot that had to hide basically trivial information from police, although, police happen to be their cousin, mother, ex wife? So we had to be "curious" Is he, did she?" When you scrap away natural and good acting, what is left is soap opera drama without much sense.
The Edge of All We Know (2020)
falling behind
We are at the time when things like this get outdated when it hit the "documentary spot" on a tv or streaming. Much quicker covering of the latest discoveries, science papers, and much more specific info along with relevant graphic using universe sandbox, kerbal space program or similar is presented in a yt channels of likes like Scott Manley, Anton Petrov or even PBS space. When you top this with nonsense fillers, annoying music, repetitive things and "director's cut" like this, it get what people here are stating.
Superman & Lois: Haywire (2021)
So let me get this straight...
...You all honestly have no problem that in the whole solar system and couple of stars more, Earth happens to have, no, not earth, USA... no, no not just USA - freakin' Smallwille have huuge deposits of "cryptoniteX" from all of the places? And from all of the places in a exploited mine that nobody noticed by now? And turns out every other person suddenly is a metahuman? How on earth Batman had such a problem to find a couple of metahumans for justice league, when he had Smallwille on disposal? And of all of the possible times, people got to develop superpowers just in time he happened to arrive back home? And a top of that he happens to have his own father in law plotting against him? Against father of his grandchildren? And what are his motives? Superman haven't been prison guard 24/7? Even not in a payroll. Not even helping his own daughter struggling with job, money, blown up car and homicide attempt that nobody care about? And what's that with the boys? Kid got government grant for a talented football skills, yet he's somehow not good enough for a village team? If that's not batwoman level screenwritting, I don't know what it is.
Tenet (2020)
Look complicated and superficially smart but...
Complication IMO serves only as a smoke screen to hide hollow plotline, and plotholes, all while characters remain shallow and underdeveloped. One has a feeling they are some video game bots, doing their pre-programmed deadpan roles. Do that, action, take that, talk to this character, go there, bring that, oh bad guys captured you; escape, and do that instead. Only thing missing are healing potions/medpacks.
Little bit of spoilers: Things that claim to be "intelligent and original" are basically false. Not just physically innacurate, but false in claiming what they represent.
-If you see bullet hole in a wall, and se a person with a gun - it's easy, just get out of a trajectory, and voila - he'll miss you.
-car driving reverse in look clever, until you reverse the timeline to align with his: turns out car is driving in a wrong direction. Turns out nobody started the car driving, since protagonist finish the drive with pushing a break. In car's timeline he started a drive by pushing a break, and nobody is steering.
-Bad russian guy only talk backwards, but walk and act forward.
Everything is basically nonsense, when you aligned reversed timeline according to a objects and characters that are moving "back in time".
Space Force: Edison Jaymes (2020)
subtle satire or light irony.
One might think this episode is ridiculing private sector, namely SpaceX, Virgin Galactic or Blue origin, but this is actually kind of mockering the people and government falling for imagined mix of Elizabeth Holmes and Kylie Jenner fraudery and superficial "influencer" culture. Is it, as a show, overall funny as the "Malcolm in the middle" (i'll pass laughtrack sitcoms on this comparison)? No. It's a subtle satire, just as the rest of the episodes. Not that developed like similar corporate comedy "Better of Ted", but when nothing better comes out, it'll be fine. Series does have some characters development, and continuity. If you take it like this, if you don't need laugh track to point out "funny parts", and don't really expect laughing your ass off, it'll be fine entertainment for lighthearted passing time.
Star Trek: Discovery: Through the Valley of Shadows (2019)
Fantasy drama as usual
...but I just couldn't bare captain Pike constantly taking orders from Burnam. Alright, we sometimes got situations that cap. Picard taking suggestions from number One or Data, or Kirk from original Spock, but this is just regular occurrence here. And it's cringe.
A Quiet Place (2018)
I don't get it... why so much praise?
...because, story wise, this is a hole big as a cartoon tunnel in road runner. Yes, Emily Blunt is a good actress, and have no problem to be expressive in given situation. But this doesn't help for this stupid premise of a movie. For start, not just an army, but civil defense would have no problem to eliminate these poor blind visitors. (how would they cope with even one tank, not to mention heavy armor piercing weaponry?)
Through the whole movie, they just randomly choose what sounds are "dangerous" and what are not. Walking through the woods full of dry leaves - no problem. Walking at home: super dangerous. Wooden steps are somehow completely silent. And happily full of sticking nails. Water flood in house somehow have no sound to be heard from...despite happening just behind krasinski? Wouldn't predator with such a good hearing be tweaked to hear breathing, or even heart beats? How do they physically hear things far away out of background wind/nature noise? And in area full of "monsters", kids are left to wander wherever they like. Wont spoil the story of movie, although really nothing to spoil. Maybe, just maybe - if they showed somehow affected isolated family with no means to escape the dire environment, ok. I was hoping for that kind, after watching trailer. But global apocalypse is just too plain stupid for that kind of threat right from the beginning of the movie. Anyhow, I was expecting something more intelligent, hence so high scoring, and good box office. Really don't get it.
After Earth (2013)
C'mon people, It's not that bad
I login today just to add some positive feedback. I am not idiot, or youngster, and can recognize bad movie and acting. And this is not the case here. It is solid movie, and as someone said, that bashing had to have some agenda behind this movie and actors. Yes, I can relate to some better behind story. Like, it is not possible for earth to differed so much in evolution in just 1000 years, and, say, one to ten million years would do better justice. And it would be hard to swallow that all 7 and some billion people would fit in space ship, so someone would had to stay and evolve along other animals. But other than that, father-son story is good solid entertainment, EFX, scenery, and directing are all perfectly adequate. I mean, c'mon, lets take same genre, SF - You would call this rubbish, and at the same time give some mindless dumb transformers better scores for acting and story? Really? I'll give it solid 7, but Yust for statistics sake, ill add another star.
Oblivion (2013)
Great looking, but not in SFclassic league
Some sporadic spoilers ahead, so be warned. First some Questions for story writers that arise to me: 1. Why Titan? This moon is terrible place for humans. Granted, it has liquid lakes an rain, but that is liquid methane we are talking about! So, no oxygen, no water and terrible cold. 2. Why go thru that energy hiperintensive cost of destroying a Moon only to scavenge water from earth? Jupiter moon Europa is 100% COVERED with water! Why not go there and work in peace? 3. Why "scaws" at the start hide their appearance from Tom? Makes no sense. 4. So what is the deal with radioactivity? At first, there is zones, later it comes to conclusion there are false borders. After nuclear war? 5. Why all of the clones go to age of 50 Years old like main character? 6. Why mother ship cannot recognize nuclear warhead, but can tell if is main character lying by his breathing and heart rate? 7. If water is somewhat sucked up (as we see from all those scenery and big fusion stations), how comes so much clouds in the area? ........... But overall, it is nice bigbudget SF flick, experienced and proved actors, decent twist, and fx-vice; worth looking at big cinema screen.
Man of Steel (2013)
dumb and dumber
I wont retell the story, and plot - It has been said, better or worst, a few dozen times thru the comics, cartoons, and movies. For a movie of hundreds of millions $$$ in Hollywood blockbuster budget range, off course, is is shiny, bigger than life spectacle. Well, Superman. But it is dumb. A Lot dumber than any recent Batman, if we choose to stay in DC universe. Acting. At start it was good. Russel Crowe and Ayelet Zurer did good performance with little story that they had. Henry Cavill is not in my opinion as good superman casting as was Brandon Routh. Too gritty for clean Superman we used to know from Christopher Reeve movies and classic comics. I would except for two times Oscar Winner Kevin Costner a little more acting than auto pilot. Al least in moments when he reveals the boy a life changing facts. Story...OK, we are in 21.st century: some more science, logic, continuity, common sense in such high budget movie would not hurt anyone. For instance; little more IQ from superior Krypton population: to forecast cataclysm and evacuate planet, instead with all that starwars technology standing and staring at each other? But instead - they practically rescue villains. And little superman baby ship needs only a few seconds to come to solar system. Why just him? Fist fight of supermans father and main villain? Really? Why are they put on, and wearing those fancy fps armors for? They don't have backup of infamous codex? They are physically exactly like European Caucasoid? They use Latin LETTERS? ("S" is most prominent of course, as for Superman)And still with no explanation, they have absolutely no idea of humans, so we are not related? Etc, etc. Overall, old story is pretty well edited, good directing, camera, and nice sounding and costumes. EFX is goodlooking, but illogical. Mostly wrong with basic mechanical principles (f.i. little body can not be big lever on flaming iron oilrig tower no matter how strong it is, or in other situation would sink in mud from pushing school bus from lake, or ... you get the picture) I know we are used to this kind superman superpowers, but in the age of computers, little simulation time for checking structural integrity, static, and good old superpowered Newtonian physic would help to distinguish a big budget movie from teenage TV series, kids cartoon, or old comicbook. Overall nice mindless fun, but with that amount of money and cast, it should have been better.
