Fear Thy Neighbor (2014)
It shows you that a feud with neighbor can be lethal
This series features episodes based on actual cases where a dispute between neighbors escalate to the point they end in bloodshed. They use actors to play the families and neighbors involved in actual cases and recreate actual events of disputes that end tragically. I'm sure they take some dramatic license but they seem try to include the actual events that started the first conflict and subsequent escalation that ended in tragedy. How accurate these are I can't say but they do include commentary of actual members of the 2 or more families involved along with the actual neighbors and friends. So they recreate the story including some of the actual people providing their recollection of the events to tell the stories of tragic events. I watch it with with my 21 year-old son and we are both intrigued with the show. Regardless of how accurate the recreation by actors may be, the viewer does learn the final outcome. It certainly shows the viewer why you want to do everything you can to be good neighbors and how tragically things can end when you don't.
Arkansas (2020)
Great Actors But Never Got There
Initially, it seemed like it was going to be a really intriguing movie the quality performances from the actors couldn't carry the script. There were some good scenes but there were also some that drug on then failed to deliver. The final 10 minutes left us confused more than anything. Despite the great acting and interesting concept, It is not something I recommend paying to view.
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)
Truly Dreadfully Awful--92 Minutes of Your Life You Can't Get Back
This was one of those movies where you put your Iphone on it's darkest setting and examine the features you'll never use just to help pass time. The acting was fine, there was just a lack of anything resembling a story-line to breathe life into. It just limped along painfully to an unremarkable conclusion that can't get there soon enough. The actors did their part and there were maybe 3 or 4 amusing scenes. In between was a lot of painfully long spells that weren't funny and didn't serve to build a viable story line. I'm assuming that the teenage viewer was the target audience but my teens and their friends weren't entertained. The main plot was kind of a vague and anemic attempt at some type of hodgepodge of double standards for female college students fused with a generic anti-adult (past usual college age) rebelliousness. It all lacked the continuity of a plausible story by movie standards. Not only does this movie require a willing suspension of disbelief, it requires a total suspension of expectation. It just sucked. That's as elegant a review as the content deserves.
American Ultra (2015)
Just A Really Bad Movie
This was very simply a really crappy movie. Despite some top flight actors, nothing could breathe life into this DOA movie. Maybe if a viewer was totally high, they might find something redeeming about this movie but we didn't. It was low budget in every sense of the word. Don't waste your money! I can't think of anything that could have helped make this movie watchable. The plot needed life support from start to finish. It just rolls from one bad scene into the next. It's basically a hodgepodge of all the clichés of every bad movie of it's type. It struck me as one of those movies that depended on a couple of recognizable names for the staring role and cameos from enough bigger names to make it intriguing but the plot and acting weren't up to par and it should have been converted for foreign markets and sent straight to foreign markets.
R.I.P.D. (2013)
Found it entertaining and amusing
I took my two younger teens and all three of us enjoyed the movie. Granted we're not going to run out and buy the CD nor curse the Academy when it receives no nominations, but it was a fun light comedy with some humorous lines and it never lulled. It was a good get-out-of-house with the boys movies and I think those that wrote dissertation-sized reviews panning it might have been expecting a little more than was offered. If you have limited movie watching funds then you might want to save you money for one of the bigger films but it was fine for a last minute decision to catch a movie at the local theater. Jeff Bridges character was funny and he did a good job with delivery. It may have borrowed a little from some other movies but no more than many others and it was an amusing premise. If you're not looking for rocket science but rather a cute movie with some good laughs, I would recommend it.
Land of the Lost (2009)
Land of the Lost Should Stay That Way
Having grown up on watching the series and being a fan of Will Ferrell, I had hoped that the movie would be a nice mix of old and new. What it turned out to be was a big disappointment. The potential for comic magic was there with Ferrel and Danny McBride, but it never clicked. What we ended up watching was a movie that lead me to conjure up adjectives like, "low budget" and "B-Movie." We've all seen movies where the comic lines never reached fruition. This movie was a textbook example of this. You can even see where it would have been funny with a little different dynamics. Sadly, it would make my Top 10 worst movies of the 2000s. My 8 year-old did enjoy though!
