Phantoms (1998)
Great start, slowly degenerating until a horrible ending
The story starts promising and freaky. Two sisters driving a car to see they're parents, living in a small village. When they get there (about two minutes in the movie) the entire village is abandoned, and weird things start happen.
The first 40-50 minutes of the movie is really good, filled with a creepy atmosphere, and the feeling of that an unknown force, with the ability to be everywhere, anytime. But then the story progresses and we realize what is causing this to happen.
The writer of this movie did too good of a job to explain a seemingly supernatural occurrence, to make it "logical" and thereby ruining the scariness of it, making the last thirty last minutes really unscary and more of a action oriented movie.
The story and beginning are great, but fatal flaws in the progress of story ruins the atmosphere, bringing this movie down to its knees.
A Murder of Crows (1998)
Promising start, weakens out towards the end
The movie begins nice enough. Out hero, the lawyer Lawson Russell played Cuba Gooding Jr. gets his lawyer license revoked and his life changed when he can't stand defending an obviously guilty sex-murderer. He throws comments at his own defendant in trial and yet the defendant goes free.
Step forward one year. Lawson is working primarily as a fisher guide, taking fishermen out. After not too long, they befriend, and the old man tells him about this novel he has made but not yet published, he gives him a copy, and dies of a heart attack not too much later. Lawson, being and unsuccessful writer himself, decides to publish the old mans novel in his own name.
Though suddenly it seems that the murders and happenings in the book already has happened...
And from there it goes downhill, really. First of all, i think the atmosphere in the movie is way too light for the message it gives, which is, that justice is unfair, if you have the right means and money. The movie would have been way more successful with a more serious Cuba Gooding Jr., but its not his fault, the scriptwriters did a too good job to portray him as a cocky and sometimes quite arrogant character. And sure, it would be okay... but i feel it still doesn't match the rest of his behavior (i.e selling another mans book as himself is not quite the idealist you'd expect from a man that is so just and cause in the beginning of the movie)
Another fault is the obvious technical errors that occur through the movie. I'm not going to spoil the ending (and if i told, i would) but if you've seen a fair share of CSI and/or other crime lab shows, you would know that there are more evidence than the true hypothetic ones (for example, who held the gun and so forth)
To conclusion, I really wanted to like this movie, but i really couldn't enjoy it because of different kinds of error that ruins the way the plot is kept up. With another tone of the movie, and a little less trying to put everything on the sharp edge, it would be way better. 5/10
Cold Case (2003)
Unprobable, at least a lot of it
I just want to say that i haven't paid a lot of attention to this series, but some things seem to strike me a lot.
For example, in the episode with the sixteen year old girl who was shot, the case was closed in 1981, but then in 2003, they instantly find the weapon used. Does anyone see a flaw in the logic?
All the episodes i see until now, truly has a lot of clues that were so extremely obvious that they really shouldn't have been missed the first time around. Right, i can understand it the first time, maybe also the second time... but when it turns into the series mantra that the police twenty years earlier were no-good and stupid. The series become extremely less believeable.
See C.S.I instead, a much better detective series, (although a bit unbelieveable too)
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Blood packed in a wacky story
The first time i heard about this movie, it sounded like a truly bad attempt to get two cult-classic supervillians out on the screen. After I had seen the movie, I kinda changed my mind. It is an attempt to get two cult-classics out on the screen, but I believe the attempt is good. Not because of the story, (gets you a little bit back on Freddie's past, and Jasons aswell) because its quite weak. This movie is more of a spoof. You got all the stereotypes, the rebel, the a**hole, the nerd, the cheerleader-type who goes after looks before brain, the pot-smoking stupors... you get my point, right? and of course you have the classic silence of Jason, and the comments from Freddy. This is one overall enjoyable film... do not rent it and expect to see an oscar, but expect one of those old slasher films that runs on a fine line to extreme worsefullness, and does it well.
Grade: 4+ outta 6
Lost in Space (1998)
Could be made better.
Well, to start with the good things.
The special effects on this movie is great. No doubt about it. The plot is, if not a bit cliche, allright enough. But, a thing that drags the whole movie down, is Matt LeBlanc. He is horrifyingly overacting. Listen to his voice. He sounds like a Machoman Wannabe. If you think i have a problem against him. I dont. But compare him with Friends (Where he is great) His voice on LIS, is like the voice he uses when he tries to get a date.
This makes the movie only an average movie. But, it is recommended for all fans of future movies
The Dark Eye (1995)
Scary...
This game is uniquely creepy. It consists of 6 sub-parts + a main part. those 6 sup-parts turn into 3 horror stories, where you play a role, two times. Either as the victim, or as the killer. The only thing that many may find out. Is that this is no real game. its more of an interactive novel. and it is very linear. All the stories, are true stories, made by Edgar Allan Poe, the first true detective story writer. So, are you a fan of the mystery\horror genre. You're gonna like this game. if you really want it, truly bad. the game itself is very big though. 300 meg. for all the sound editing. Two thumbs up
