The Munsters (2022)
I like it (but I wanted to)
Undeniably full of love, color and campy comedy. Bonus, it's The Munsters.
Honestly, as soon as it starts you can see why it got dumped to Netflix with little fanfare. But for once in Zombie's career, his movie might be unjustly buried and it sucks. I fear this is it for his directing days, so I am hoping for cult success here..
I love all of his films, especially the early ones and I found myself just wishing he had more studio support because his visions are undeniably unique. It just seems that he always suffers from being misunderstood, whether that is the horror space or coming from the music space I don't know... but more belief in the product I think would have gone a long way here. Why is this not in theaters for Halloween? I can't believe that but Hotel Transylvania 3 or 4 or whatever and any Tim Burton flick would be a blockbuster in season.
The film looks amazing with more color than I have seen on screen in awhile, and this is a Gothic setting so that should say a lot. Makeup/FX is incredible, and even on a crystal clear 4KTV it reads really well on whatever they shot this with. I switched to 1080p on a standard TV halfway through and felt the movie looked better overall with the almost entirely live sets (or so it seems).
It is going to be a jarring film for people, but the opening minutes try to crack that shell early on. Yes these are monsters but it doesn't have to be all frights.
Standouts for me was anything with Orlock, Brake as a gleeful villain within the confines of PG rating, and really just a great job by the main 3 playing the campy comedy in their characters. It all definitely has a classic feel and does not try to outdo itself mainly by updating what makes it The Munsters and sticking to it.
