Knightley and Canet worth the view - Spoilers!
15 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This film provides an insightful look into infidelity and its causes. One type of infidelity is strictly sexual, the other is of the heart. The two main stories are of the husband, Worthington, and his affair with Mendes, and of Knightley meeting her lost love, Canet.

The Knightley/Canet storyline gets it right. With these two, there is an easy flow to their conversations, and you can feel that at one time they were and still are reluctantly in love. She is proving to be a maturing actress and he possesses such charm on screen. They both desperately want to be together but Knightley is the one who won't allow it, from a sense of misguided loyalty to a man who, at the same moment, is cheating on her.

Mendes/Worthington are a bit of a let down. They lack chemistry and Mendes is the main issue. As an actress, she often comes off as wooden and monotone - her role needed anything but that. When she reveals her past, as an audience we are supposed to feel bad for her and therefore care a little less that she's actively pursuing a married man; instead, her line delivery left me feeling unmoved.

Knightley/Canet are worth the view. In the end, when he boards the plane to leave and she's left at home, crying and staring out the window, the montage of memories through his eyes moves me like nothing else in the movie, and this is because their storyline has proper background and pivotal construction. They are believable and they are the ones to be mourned.

I'm reading that some people believe she's about to tell Worthington the truth at the end -- unfortunately, I doubt it. She's going to say something like, "Let me put shoes on" or another mundane thought. I wish instead she could leave him, but then the movie wouldn't be called "Last Night." It was only ever supposed to be one night.

Alternate Version Is Better
12 April 2010
I have watched both versions of the film, and after eagerly anticipating it for more than a year, I can say that the alternate version is what I had expected/hoped for and completely changes the entire film. This film is by no means perfect, and certainly isn't the best written piece of cinema out there, but the story had me wrapped up and interested. The alternate ending made me love it.

If you go into this film under the misapprehension of the marketing - which is, that this film is another "Grudge" or whatever the company tried to push - then you may be disappointed; it is less supernatural and altogether more human.
