Metro Manila (2013)
Extremely well made Phillipinne movie... brought me to tears.
And that takes a lot to make me come to tears. I haven't wrote a review on IMDb in awhile and there is some movies deserving of one that I should review it but this one... man it hurt me, in a good way sort of speak. This is a story of a man that simply is trying to do his role as a husband and father by making sure his family is taken care of. He comes from a background that I'm sure those from the Philippines will relate to and decides that life in the big city will give his family a change of pace. He instead finds that the city is full of betrayal and lies with the people he meets. Not to say everyone there is out to hurt someone but it shows the realism of what some people go through simply trusting in someone they don't know. This is not a action movie but a movie that is sort of a thriller and moving like... sorry, my terminology isn't there for movies.
The movie is a tearjerker as they say and I'm a black man who actually don't mind movies like that. This movie I didn't expect to be tearjerkish and I really don't go looking for those type movies. I'm not trying to say that this movie should be watched to feel bad for someone but that it is a movie centered on trying to capture how things can really get rough for families trying to start out in Manila.
Every time "Oscar" the main character had something happen to him, it affected me and that goes to show how EXCELLENT a job Jake did in this role. Everyone played their parts right even down to the adorable daughter of his. At times I was concerned his wife would leave him... just had me that in tuned.
Everything about the movie is gritty and surreal that you feel as if this is really happening; someone just taped it all somehow. What happens in the end brought me to tears because I am a human that sympathize and understand a bold move people will take for their family. It just pains me that I can only wish I could tell folks I know about this movie but they won't give it a try because it is a foreign movie and don't want to read subtitles.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
A surprising movie that will affect the emotions if you can relate

Warm Bodies (2013)
A high school movie of a Romantic Zombie
This zombie made all zombies a joke. Of course Hollywood approved this trash but nevertheless here it is on IMDb with a rating of 7.3. Simply amazing that this movie has garnished such reviews and ratings. What were people thinking when they seen this? Cute? Heart-warming? Loving? I mean this movie wasn't realistic in any sense even for a Zombie movie. Zombies uniting together and having hearts of a human??? Original in a bad way people but because the people of today are very much simple minded and perhaps there are many women rating this or something is beyond my understanding. Movies that really deserve a 7 or higher get rated 4's and 5's but this one has changed my mind on folk who do rate low.
Production value is not bad, acting not bad, Ponies not bad, lol and idea wasn't bad but this movie had a strong way of annoyance with the humans and zombies working together due to a couple comprising of a boy zombie and a girl. Talking Zombies is not bad but those that feel... can love... can become human again is not something that should have ever been done. Kissing the dead... BIG NO! What perverted person could ever get away with away with that? Let it been a woman zombie kissing a man and this be on the cover of Newsweekly for a sham.
This is a movie for a group of illiterate high school minded folk who get kicks of this mess. Pure calamity of the horror genre. Waste of my time after watching another waste of my time watching Jack the Giant Slayer. Hollywood could only be the one to get away of Zombies becoming Human. Disaster from the beginning to the end.
Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)
Very cliché romance including Giants
Alright, as many know this is a adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. I don't vividly remember such a tale involving a boy who is all about a dang Princess who want freedom and she happens upon this boy a "Commoner" who is Jack and it revolves around them being in love. The movie is centered around the beans and Jack getting them from a person in trouble and he coincidentally drops a bean that in turn rain falls upon it in Jacks house that grows the magical bean while the Princess is there. From there the princess is captured at the top of the beanstalk by the giants and a rescue mission is ago to find her. The movie was boring me already at this point as 30 minutes or so has gone by just for the bean to grow into the famous beanstalk. The part of the climbing of the beanstalk itself took 30 mins for them to even get to where the giants lived. So that is a hour without the Giants and garbage between folklore and romance building.
This movie finally gets to the preview of the giant that chases one of the knights and from there you start to see more of the giants. I came to this movie for my daughter's birthday March 1st but I wanted to see it as the previews made the Giants look awesome. But that is just good marketing as this movie was nothing more than a weak boy that slays 1 giant by surprise, another because it was sleep and the last because he drops a dang bean he coincidentally kept for non known reasons into the giants mouth as the giant SLOWLY gets ready to eat him. There is not much the giants ever do but scream and run only to reach their destination and bow down to some crown made of freaking giant heart and then the movie ends.
I cant believe this movie has close to a 7 as it was the same cliché mess of Hollywood adding romance to something and including extra parts of ridiculous comedy that only some lame people would laugh at. Kids watching this will not understand hardly anything going on unless they like 8 or older. Swan and the Princess had more action than this movie. I mean what movie has humans being able to play tug of war with massive giants??? This one does and does it for more than 15 minutes. But of course since this movie pg-13 then I guess all this is forgiven then... I could give a more detailed description of what you would be getting into but I won't because this movie doesn't need some intelligent review. You want to know the action of the movie??? Watch the previews of it and you will see every action part there. Farting, nose digging and arm smelling is hardly a reason to consider this movie laughable. It is simply a disaster and doesn't even deserve the 5 I gave it but I did enjoy the Giants though. Watch if you into bubbly romance movies of pure coincidences.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
Underrated show after the End of Andy Whitfield
I don't even really know where to start with this review. I'm not going too be complex on the words to write as if I'm a vivid movie "reviewer" but I know entertainment and a good show. Spartacus is certainly that. Since the beginning of this shows start... I have been amazed at the fight scenes, storyline, rich acting, cinematography, chosen actors, progression, climaxes, fear, sadness, shock, riveting scenes, drive and boldness to do a story of a man who went from the very bottom of the totem pole to the top in a historical event that will end God knows how.
I didn't know much of the history behind Spartacus and the ways of the Romans and their movement and corruption too. But this show has brought too light a lot that hasn't really been portrayed in such a way. A feeling like "300" and storyline strong like "ROME". Nevertheless the show is of its own caliber in so many ways. As I'm on the 4th episode of War of Damned which may be one of the hardest episodes to watch knowing how this adds up to the end many historians have spoke concerning Spartacus movement, I have seen that the people I know have given up on this excellent show for a sad reason.
Andy Whitfield was a major priority to the strength of this show in his presence and acting. He led this show with such prowess that we all are sad to his leaving of this world (He died of cancer). But for the producers, writers, the director and Starz to allow this to continue is a major present to us all. This story had to continue and they made a bold move in replacing the original Spartacus with a new one to keep it moving. Liam Mcyntire has taken a role that is hard to fill and because there are many unsatisfied and unrealistic TV show watchers... this movie can't even make it past 9 in rating due to them replacing Andy Whitfield. He is doing SUCH a amazing job in his place and is maybe on the same level as Andy as Spartacus. But the show is more than Liam Mcyntire's role as Spartacus.
Again, this show is a movement for this historical piece. Crixus played by Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah as Doctore, Lucy Lawless as Lucretia, Ashur played by Nick Tarabay and so many others that take a actual role of those that played part in the history of the grand scale of a act for valor. They help more than enough to make this show one of the greatest of all time. I hate more than anything people who will give up on a show that everything you can desire in a adult program is depicted in. You have to watch this or continue it past (for those that have stopped) the Andy Whitfield Spartacus, so you can have memory of something special.
I wish I could give more detail into why this show is amazing and needs the support to be watched by all that are mature and adult. To give more into this story for those who can handle all it will throw at you but that will give away the many surprises in store for a good watch (No Spoiler from me but you can get a idea of what you in store for by doing a background check about Spartacus rebellion against the Romans slavery). Spartacus is more than battle and wit but of courage, bravery, endurance, pity and knowledge into how far people will go for so called glory and what one will do to make the glory right. Don't just take my review and compare to Newsweekly, Entertainment, Roger Ebert, Rotten Tomatoes would say but just watch and give the show a chance, even past Andy Whitfield. Liam Mcyntire is a practical choice for a sad leaving of the original but he will give us the Spartacus that all that have reason and logic will understand and root for. Thank You.... Chavis Atkins.
Senseless (2008)
Brilliant thriller
This movie is a movie that is a true gem in the rough. It tells the story of a man whom is kidnapped and tortured for the crimes of America in a whole but to prove a point at the same time. The acting was really flawless and real but the torture was just gut wrenching. Senseless is really about the lost of this mans senses but how many will he have taken from him or will there be any at all? Well by the title it is obvious but I didn't quite see the blatant of it while watching as you become so involved with the characters humiliation, loneliness, pain and suffering that you want it all to stop.
There are parts in the movie that get very disturbing and sad because you ask yourself "Is this really going to happen?". Not just that but then "Is this method really being used?". I can't imagine the pain in reality one would go through in what the protagonist did but it has to be out of this world. The story could have been developed more in particular parts such as a bit of the captors motive in specifically him and behind the scenes of where the main actor was confined. The story is deep and more than just a sight for blood lust and horror. Watch closely and listen to all that is being portrayed as it is important.
I really don't understand the voters at all on IMDb and Netflix but this movie should be seen for its morality and message of todays politics and such. Such that brings today's society in such uproar and battle. I am very much satisfied with what I have seen and give this movie a 8.5 out of 10. Not for kids or squeamish but a true piece of art.
Skyline (2010)
People expected too much from Skyline
If a person is on here downgrading Skyline then they certainly had too much of high hopes for a movie that seriously reminded me of movies that people overate like "Transformers" and "Piranha". I knew what I was in for when I watched this movie. A movie with a different idea and concept that entertained me. The CGI was great and what did you expect even if a genuine actor was in place of the movie. What the heck could Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton or even Sean Penn. It is a simple movie that has some action scenes worth watching and just fun altogether if you can take the serious out of it. It is corny yes and the acting was cliché but don't seriously be going to the movies and paying for you to be inevitably disappointed. This movie is for a teen mindset and idiots that expected more don't know movies.
My Name Is Khan (2010)
I rarely cry... this put me in tears of joy and sadness
My name is Khan... I'm not a terrorist! My name is Khan... I'm not a terrorist, My name is Khan... I'm not a terrorist. He made me want to become a revolutionary for peace and long suffering. I wish more people can be the way he exhibited true humanity. I mean the movie goes so deep in its message with excellent acting on top of that. 2 hours and 30 mins well worth watching. It gives you everything you would expect in a top notch movie. Sentimental, funny, angering, loving and romantic plus above all important meanings. I would go more in detail but I'm playing Fallout New Vegas and it is taking my attention. Please watch this. Best movie of 2010 and a Oscar will be in place for it.
Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)
I was hurt and amazed
This Batman although it is animated was probably the deepest one I have seen ever. I love Batman period but this making of him and all the detail with this show of him put me over the edge. The acting was flawless and Nightwings addition added to the overall mood of the movie. The action is all there and emotions too. I am not a sensitive guy at all but this movie touched me in ways I couldn't bear to hold in. It is deep in the storyline written and portrayed with scenes of solitude to the Batman fan. Anyone rating less than 7 for this did not see where this was going in showing a different side to everything that someone would expect from out of Batman... movie, series or comic. This movie needs more air and I can't wait to see something like this done again. Be ready to be surprised and too overwhelmed with questions asked and answered from a certain someone in the movie. I know I always wondered. The second best movie of Batman to "The Dark Knight"! I would have gave this a 10 if the animation was a bit more raw and gritty.
