The Invention of Lying (2009)
One of the Worst Films I've Seen - Ricky whats gone wrong??
First of all let me say that Ricky Gervais is one of my favourite comedians. I loved the Office, Extras and the Podcasts. Even his chat show was hilarious. Ghost Town was average, but Invention of Lying was just utter tripe!!
It has to be one the worst films I have seen, and I don't generally hate many films. It felt the same as Ghost Town. Gervais played exactly the same character, depressed, miserable, trying to get a girl that was out of his league.
I did find the film quite funny, but that's not because there were a lot of jokes. I just found myself laughing at Gervais - with his trademark hand gestures, facial expressions, comic delivery. I found myself laughing at that rather than what was being said. I couldn't take seriously the scene where his mum is dying - I was just thinking Ricky's going to laugh any second now! To me, he's too much of a funny person to act seriously, which he can't do well anyway. To be honest, the funniest and best scene was the one with Stephen Merchant (legend!) and Barry from Eastends.
The idea of the film was good, but the execution was terrible. I didn't find any of the actors performances believable (apart from Edward Norton who stole the scene). The whole film had a negative feel about it. Everybody in it was unhappy, angry, depressed - is that how we would all feel if we couldn't tell lies? A lot of reviews have been saying that the film had a deep meaning, but the only one I could see was don't judge people by their appearance but by their character - where have we heard that one before??
I really think Gervais should give up on the movie acting and stick to stand-up and writing with Stephen Merchant (Cemetery Junction looks really good). I want to give this zero, but unfortunately I'll have to give it 1!
Prison Break: The Final Break (2009)
Should Never have Been Made!
I really wish I never watched this! Appently it was supposed to answer all the remaining questions, but what questions?? The only ones I can think of was how Michael died (which was better when you thought it was because of his illness), and how the hell Kellerman became a congressman after what he admitted to!
For me, it made a mockery of season one. The amount of work Michael put into his plan of breaking Lincoln out was brilliant and the way parts of his plan came together was what really made season one a great series. But this felt like it had been written up in 30 seconds! Oh yeah just set off a fire alarm, create a diversion outside and sneak in...genius, no one can fool that plan!
The characters of the womens prison were just completely pointless. The woman t-bag wannabe was so unconvincing. The main characters all had a chance to grow and develop over the course of the four seasons, but the writers made these new characters act as if we've known them the whole time. This isn't a show thats meant to be squashed into 80 minutes.
I thought the actual ending of PB was perfect and very emotional. But this ending just tried to mimic that with very bad results! The TV switch off thing at the end was ridiculous, and left you thinking "what the hell was that?!" I love every season of Prison Break, it was one of the best shows on TV and I'm sad to see it leave. But The Final Break will ruin everything loved about the show and destroy that perfect, yet sad, ending they gave it. Don't Watch!
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
The Perfect Summer Blockbuster!
I was very excited about this film. When I first saw the trailer, I was blown away by how good it looked. It is the perfect film if you just want to shut off your brain and just enjoy massive explosions, huge robots fighting and amazing visual effects.
The visual effects were just absolutely stunning! The amount of work that must have gone into creating the fight sequences must have been immense, but they did an excellent job (the transformation of Devastator was a definite highlight!)
For me, the comedy element was a bit too much, however it did provide a few good jokes here and there. It's always good to have humour in films like this, but this was mainly very slapstick and annoying at times (Sam's mother and those ridiculous twin robots for instance!). The plot seemed quite ludicrous, but hey, it is an alien robot film (and a Michael Bay film).
It's a very typical Bay film, with vast amounts of action, cheesy comedy, dramatic camera techniques and intense music, but ticks all the box of what a summer blockbuster should be. Don't go into the film and start to pick holes in the acting or script cos you won't find many positive things to say.
Just sit and marvel at the amazing effects and enjoy the brilliant explosive thrill ride that this movie brings!!
