PS: I have deliberately excluded 'Friends' from it. Not that I don't like it, I just didn't want to.
Reviews
Overlord (2015)
This is more of a question than review
Why everybody is rooting for the main guy in reviews when he is the worst guy, the most ugly person there is. I mean, I have seen villains more kind hearted than this guy.
You (2018)
It plays with your morality
Sometimes you start rooting for the main character and it makes you feel uncomfortable.
Zeitgeist (2007)
Reviewed from an atheist point of view
I am an atheist myself. I don't believe in religion much for the same reasons that are shown in the documentary. But there are some facts in this documentary that I know to be untrue. And more I dig around, the more I find that this documentary has an agenda and it has assembled whatever it can find to prove that agenda. This documentary just exists to cater to the minds of conspiracy theorists than to actually enlighten and question the existing system. After seeing this documentary and digging around myself, I am more of a believer that 911 was not a conspiracy but in fact was a terrorist attack with serious shortcomings of the government mainly because the government officials had prepared but didn't actually believe that something like this would happen.
Dark (2017)
You know those shows you have to watch 2 times to understand, you have to watch it at least 3 times
First you will watch this show, you will understand around 30%, you think you have understood 70% but that wouldn't be the case. Then, instead of watching it a second time, go to a fan site where the events are in chronological order. Now you have understood the show 80%. Then watch the show again keeping the fan site tab open and if you get confused just refer to the site. Now, you have understood the show 95%. You will still miss very small things. But every time you watch it you will new things. And every time it will be a thrill. It's like a book that you read over and over. And gets different flavour each time. The best thing about the show is you will have different feelings on some character's decision each time.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Great Show only if you can avoid watching the last season
Just go and read the books after watching five seasons.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
It is good but still overrated.
I finished watching this series two days back. This is series is good. You will feel the horror. So, why I rated it at 7. Because the ending was 'meh'.
When a family tries to flip the house which is actually a estate, their children encountered things that haunts them for their life. Series goes back and forth in time and every thing is very well knitted except when you finally realise the reason because of which everything is happening then you don't feel so satisfied with the ending.
Episodes (2011)
What to say .....
Matt Damon plays himself here. Maybe, they changed his background story from real life but they definitely kept all the story about him being an actor on friends. So, does that make it fun to watch? A little yeah. But other than that they just show that Matt Damon is a selfish pr**k. And, I don't know about his real life but you kind of start hating him in the series. Besides him, there are two other main characters whom you gradually start to dislike as the series go on. So, character likability goes out of the window and the only option that remains at the table is dark humour. But dark humour needs some bad s**t to happen or some serious sadness, of which there is none here. Everybody is just being a selfish pr**k at one or another point. After saying all this, I confess that I have watched first two seasons of this series. What piqued my interest was their portrayal of how Hollywood industry works. That's the only reason I watched two seasons. I hate all the characters now, enough to discontinue watching this series.
Westworld (2016)
Reviewing after Season 1
Westworld, a theme park, big enough to have mountains, rivers and trains, is a place for people to have fun, go on adventures, and to do pretty much anything gore without facing any real consequences because they can't be killed here and all the subjects are robots. But that's just the surface of the story, which you understand in first 10 minutes. Real story lies behind the question 'Whether these robots should be considered humans' since they talk, walk, eat, feel and do everything a human does. Except they are artificial, and this story makes you question that very line of distinction.
This story follows a world with humans and robots on different arcs uncovering different truths. But they all come at one place in the finale. It is important to know that all the footage of this series revolves around 'Westworld'. And, we know nothing about the outside world like how advanced it is, which might come in season 2.
Their mystery, setting, character development, subtlety of background music is 10 on 10. It is needless to say that unless you specifically don't like sci - if or casual nudity or big plots, this is a must watch.
This Is Not My Life (2010)
Never a dull moment
Alec Ross wakes up on a bed he doesn't recognize, with a family he doesn't remember, inside a town that seems too peaceful to be real. As, he discovers more and more people that feel the same way, he tries to find the reason behind all of this.
So, why this series is good? Because, some thriller series wait for the end of a season to reveal something big. This doesn't even wait for the end of an episode. And, if you blink an eye you will miss something. This is a very fast paced series with material of 2-3 seasons packed in one. Mysteries are fresh, creative and leads to more questions that will keep you guessing. Often with big conspiracies, everything is shown black and white. Our hero is portrayed as good and soldiers/employees of powers that be, are bad. But here, they have lots of gray area on both sides, which keeps the story realistic. Also, despite the plot being very huge, the writers of this show handled the script flawlessly. This series could have gone for 3-4 more seasons as many minor questions remain unanswered but the primary objective of season 1 was achieved so in a way it gives you closure at the end.
The Sinner (2017)
A bit hard to review
Cora Tannetti knifes a random guy on a beach (lake side), when she was on a picnic with her husband and her 6-7 year old son. Guy dies on the spot and nobody has a clue including her as to why she did it. While she forfeits the right to a trial by pleading guilty in the court, an adamant Detective thinks that there is more to the incident.
This series is a bit hard to review. Why? It has mystery around it. But the detective work is plain and simple. I mean, for real life, a detective's work should be like this only but there's not much thrill there. Also, you don't find yourself rooting for the lead character either. When the mystery unravels you couldn't have predicted it and it is fresh but there's no wow factor and you just feel 'okay'.
Background music is subtle. Acting is good. Every actor played their part flawlessly. Script never demanded for an 'out of box' performance. You will not find anything wrong with the series except there's not much of a wow factor and you don't relate to any of the characters at all.
Manhunt (2017)
Detective Series with a creative and good direction
A recently appointed FBI profiler invents a whole new profiling method to catch the Unabomber, a person who alluded the FBI for two decades.
This representation of detective chase is totally different from what I have encountered before. Here, the scenes from different times are jumbled together. So, you know pretty much everything, from the very first episode. But as they say it is not about the destination but the journey. And, the journey here is thrilling enough to keep you on your seat until the finale is finished.
Spoilers Ahead: Things that I liked refreshing in this series. 1) FBI profiler invents the forensic linguistics, a whole new branch of FBI to catch the culprit. 2) The message, Unabomber tries to relay to the world. 3) How, the FBI profiler's life change by the message of Unabomber 4) How, the idea means more to Unabomber than his own life.
The Strain (2014)
Review after series finale
A 2,000 year old vampire tries to take over the earth for his ruling. A 94 year old man, a doctor, a rat inspector, a hacker, a street thug and another old vampire sets out to take him down.
I am writing this review on the day this series came to an end. Neither, it is bad, nor it is very good. That means if you start watching this series, you can finish it till end without hating it totally. But it goes downhill a little bit.
What's different here is a complete re-writing of the rules for vampires. This series has merged the science and the vampirism into one. Generally, people who like to watch fantasy or sci-fi because they have rules different than normal life, would like it because the set of rules are different here than any other vampire series out there. However, all the rules were discovered till season 2 and the only thing that remained, was to kill the vampire which took them another 2 seasons.
The 'gore' and the 'vampire make up' in this series is too much to handle, but it is necessary as per the story.
Even though, the heroes/heroines acting aren't bad, their characters aren't very likable either, however they are realistic. Except the child actor that they switched in season 2. The child actor single-handedly brought down the series furthermore.
If you want to discover the set of rules on your own by watching the series. Don't read further.
Set of rules: Vampire gets burnt in sunlight (duh). Every vampire turned by the master vampire or one of the master's vampire is controlled by the master. People are turned into vampires by the strain (a thin worm) that gets passed into their system while they are bitten. If you have even a single strain in your system, you will be turned unless you kill yourself there's no way around it. Master cannot cross flowing water on his own (it was a good addition). Silver hurts the vampire too a lot. These are the rules you discover in first season as the series progresses you discover more.
The Magicians (2015)
Reviewing after season 2
Just finished binge watching it till season 2. First I will compare it with Harry Potter, then we will dive into the plot and then why this series is so good.
So, when I read the other reviews here, they stated that the premise is like Harry Potters, but story is good. I started watching first episode and it looked like it was a total rip off of Harry Potters in terms of education, how they hide among muggles and similar scenarios. But it was just first episode establishing itself. It embarks on a completely different story with a completely different background and as you start your adventure with this series, you would see that this a totally, different kind of world. I mean different story tellers write different stories/premises/rules about magical realms. And, if you want to watch something other than Harry Potters, this is really good and well knitted story. But enough with the Harry Potters. Let's dive into the plot.
A depressed young man and his friend who has passed high school, summoned into a magical university for an entrance test for admission. And thus, their childhood intuitions/dreams that magic is real becomes true. But, there is a beast who he accidentally summons into his first week of class which wrecks havoc on everyone. And, now it's his mission to fight him. Meanwhile, his friend didn't pass the test for university and tries to learn magic outside school by whatever means necessary.
There are a few things about the plot that seemed very new and likable. First, they have a famous children's book about magical realm to which they keep referring again and again. And, how that children's book start mattering a lot in their world. Second, our hero's arc and his friends arc are totally separated from one another and then when they explain it in the series, why it is separated and how it all comes together at the end of the first season is just beautiful. Third, most of the series when have defeated their first nemesis couldn't handle their plot and starts creating unrealistic enemies with unrealistic connections. But when the world here, gets big they are totally able to handle their plots. And, you don't feel like now it has just become boring, predictable and unrealistic.
Each episode is a different kind of adventure, diving into a different kind of magic. Even, when there is no life or death situation, the episodes/plots are interesting enough to keep you hooked. The background music is just like any other thrillers series would have it but not out of the box. Some characters are very likable and some are very unlike-able but acting never gets below average. I have watched till season 2 and hoping that they will be able to handle their plots in season 3, for which I am eagerly waiting.
Glitch (2015)
Reviewing after season 2
Okay, I just binge watched season 1 & 2 together. Let's start with plot and background story. Then, we will dive into the analysis.
One night in Yoorana (a town of Australia), 6-7 dead people comes out of their graves. They are not zombies but healthy and if they had diseases due to which they died, they don't have it anymore. A boy watching it happen, calls the police. When policeman arrives in cemetery, seeing one of them is injured, he calls the doctor, thinking this whole thing might be a part of some dare or a drunken incident. However, as the doctor and policeman realizes the truth, they start helping and protecting the 'risen'. The risen are healthy but have some limitations which makes the story more interesting.
I started watching it because people writing reviews here, were in the awe of this series. Season 1 episode 1 was interesting, but as the story progresses, I found it's pace a bit slow for my taste. Remembering pieces bit by bit, and unraveling mysteries of their past is good but doesn't lead to much places. However, last episode picked up the pace, and started opening the pieces of how these people might have come back. And the last sentence of season 1 finale hooked me up so much that I started season 2 right away. Season 2 has a better pace then season 1 and doesn't shy away from major questions. However, it also generates more questions which you might get answers to, if it is renewed for season 3. I watched a similar series 'Resurrection' which had the same scenario but they never dwelled on the why/how of it. I liked this series better because they are approaching that question and making it the center premise of this series.
Besides that I liked the acting, all characters were believable. There were many coincidences, but in a small town there can be, so I don't mind them a lot. A lot of good series hooks you up with their background music and this series could have had one, but it doesn't. All in all if you want to choose among series having dead people coming back from their graves, I would recommend this one over any other.
Dark Matter (2015)
Review till season 3
Spoilers Ahead:
Six people and a robot find themselves on a space ship with no memories of their past. As the show progresses they keep figuring out about their past and your excitement level increases with it. The good thing is that everyone has a totally different background, which kind of hooks you on the show. Furthermore, season one has a good twist too for wrapping things up. But as season 2 starts they have pretty much figured out all their past and the excitement level of their adventures starts to drop too. (Major Spoiler Start) On top of that they kill one of the main characters, which I liked the most among them. (Major Spoiler End).
Even then I found myself dragging till season 3 finale. But I am not going to watch this show anymore. Because, now they are just making up stories and unrealistic enemies to raise the stakes. And, the series arcs are just boring now. However, individual episodes still have some kind of excitement to them, due to the life and death situations they present. And, every second or third episode is a different kind of adventure.
Season 1 & 2 are good and if you watch them, the unraveling of mysteries will give you a good adventurous feeling. After that, even if you leave, you won't find yourself missing out on any mystery or any background story related to them.
The Good Place (2016)
Original Mystery Series (reviewing after season 1 finale)
Sometimes there's a series which has mystery in it, but we don't even know it's there, until the truth is revealed. 'The Good place' is one of those series.
Eleanor dies and goes to a good place (kind of like heaven), where she finds out that there has been a mix up, and she is not supposed to be in a good place. She got exchanged with other Eleanor having the same name & surname, died at the same time. She tries to be worthy of the place she has been given, but she can't be a good person and impostor at the same time. How can she rectify her situation?
If you watch till season 1 finale, you will find episodes are short and humorous (not funny). But, the revelation will be worth it.
Narcos (2015)
It shows you how to play the system, piece by piece
An excellent TV series, which you already know from the rating, so I am just going to dive into the plot/story.
MAJOR Spoilers ahead:
First two seasons follows two characters -> Pablo Escobar, a drug lord, who plays the system to climb up in the world through the ladder of narcotics. And, Steve Murphy, a DEA agent who kept on shaking that ladder with his partner 'Pena', and ready to put chains on Escobar when he slips. Pablo Escobar, will show you how to live larger than life and what mistakes to avoid if you don't want your house of cards to fall down like his own. First season also gives a glimpse of Cali cartel being number two, spreading their business and voluntarily/involuntarily helping DEA to bring down Pablo Escobar.
In third Season there is no Steve Murphy but Pena and Cali cartel (four god fathers). It will show how the Cali cartel learns from the mistakes of Pablo Escobar, and perfects the drug trafficking system as told in TV series. And how Pena not just shakes the ladder this time but cuts it down altogether when Cali Cartel godfathers have already reached the top. He remains persistent and fights the system that supposed to be helping him. I mean there's literally a scene where police are chasing a truck to free the godfather from being jailed and getting justice. Yeah the series gets funny like that sometimes, but in a very subtle and realistic way.
When I watched the first two seasons, I liked them a lot. But there was something missing, which I was able to pinpoint when I watched season 3. In first two seasons, our hero was never in control. He was relentless, persistent and everything, you could ask from a good DEA agent but Escobar was just too much for him to handle. But in season 3, when Pena takes the wheel, he rattled Cali Cartel empire and brings them from their luxurious retirement plan to the seat of justice. It was amazing seeing Pena and his two subordinates in action.
11.22.63 (2016)
A Time Travel show with a well knit ending
So, I just finished watching this series. And, as with most of the series, I binge watched it. The plot was okay, but the thing that I liked most about this series is, that the ending and the plot was all very well threaded. The result being you don't encounter any plot holes which happens a lot with other time travel shows.
Jumping right into the story. An English teacher goes back in time to save president JFK as the person who sends him (a war veteran) believe that everything will be better if JFK is saved. Major spoilers ahead about the time travel rules: He can only go back in time on a particular moment in 1960. And when he goes and comes back, whatever he do will be reflected in his time period. However there is a catch, if he goes back again, everything he has done in his previous visit will be reset. This one small rule is the key difference b/w this time travel series and others out there (which can't keep their plots straight). Also, because the event he wants to stop is in 3 years ahead of his jump. You will see, his one jump spread over the full series, instead of a lot jumps and tries.
What this TV series is not - a cat and mouse chase, or a very thrilling series, with a lot of life and death situations. But a calculated and somewhat boring layout by our hero to save JFK. You will definitely think of a better way to do the things that he would be doing in the series, so you might get frustrated. But all in all, the acting, hard choices situation and an overall different way (than most series) of handling situations by our hero will keep you entertained.

Falling Skies (2011)
it's okay
Just finished watching this series. I had watched this series 2 years back till season 3 episode 5, got bored and left it. At that time, episodes were coming one by one, and it was boring. Then, picked it up a few days back and binge watched it till season 5 series finale. I wouldn't say it is a very good TV series. But you can watch it. I had watched and left other TV series like 'V' about alien invasion. I would say it is better than 'V', episode wise, may be not plot wise. This TV series is one ground battle after another, each one with bigger stakes than the previous one. I like a TV series if it presents hard choices to its main character and how they choose among their options. It has a bit of that going for it.
Story follows Tom Mason, his family, and 2nd mass (Massachusetts) battalion captain that fight aliens to free their world. If you decide to watch this TV series, you will see the journey of main characters from one place to another, encountering new people, new communities and new goals to achieve every time. However, the cliché remains, our main characters will not be killed. (Spoiler: Start) Even, if they are captured by aliens, or if they bomb the moon, hitching a one way ride, they will get back to their people. (Spoiler: End) But if you binge watch it you may enjoy it. I don't think there are any other good TV series out there about alien invasion. So, I settled for this one.
American Gods (2017)
A different take on religion
Premise: A world where Gods born and die depending on the stories people believe in. And, this story is about war b/w old gods and new.
Initial Plot: 'Shadow' gets released two days early from jail because his wife dies. On the way home, he is offered a job by 'Wednesday' to be his right hand (sort of). And thus, the adventures of Wednesday and Shadow start. But what he doesn't know is, he has entered the world of gods and he can't trust anyone not even Wednesday.
Concept: Different and nice
Background Music: okay
Pace: A bit slow for my taste
Thrilling: yes
Acting: Above Average
Humor: A bit
Dialogues: Good
12 Monkeys (2015)
Review till season 3
I didn't vote for this series, because till now I have only voted 10 or 1 for any series. And this is neither.
This is a time travel show, where past can be changed. So, they change it a lot. They start out cautiously but that goes out the window after 4th-5th episode. I don't like sci-fi shows that defies their own logic, but this is an exception. Because, not only they defy their own rules, but in a very subtle way they accept that what happened can't be explained.
Premise -> James Cole comes and goes to past from future, to stop the plague from happening that kills 7 billion people. But after first season, the main focus shifted from plague to something else, where they define their main villain. So, the main fight begins after first season. You may keep on watching this show one episode after other, as episodes are good. But you will see that their plot don't hold water for very long. And, it is just a cat and mouse run, one after the other. If you like time travel shows, you can give it a try, once you have exhausted your better options.
Finally, I would say, season 1 started good, became awesome, dropped the ball in second season, but third season ending wrapped it up good. Means I am satisfied till now and will watch fourth season, but not waiting eagerly.
Salvation (2017)
Premise good, everything else below average
When an asteroid is going to hit the earth like Armageddon, it makes an interesting story. But the episodes are boring. Can't pinpoint the actual cause for that. While watching this show, I basically do everything else and still don't miss out anything from the plot. Even then, when i return to pay attention, it seems boring.
The plot, script is good. But the presentation, moments which make you jump on your seat, background music, there is none. You don't feel anything for the characters. You won't even bother, if they kill off the whole cast and bring new characters to continue the work of previous ones.
Even after saying all this, I found myself dragging to the sixth episode of this show. I don't know if I would watch this show anymore. Maybe, if there's nothing on and I have spare time.
Orphan Black (2013)
Good show, give first two episodes a try then decide.
First season was the most thrilling, then second a bit less, then third a bit less, but they picked up during fourth season and finished well in fifth. This series has a new, creative and different premise, which is shown exceptionally well. But the real reason that anyone would recommend this show is that the premise of the story demanded exceptional acting from the lead actress, and she proved herself 10 on 10. Just for those reasons you should watch the first two episodes of the show and you will automatically be hooked. If it is not your cup of tea, even then you will be satisfied with the acting.
The Leftovers (2014)
Series good, ending exceptional
Series is overall good. I binge watched it. When it came out, I watched 9 episodes of first season and then left it and didn't bother to watch the last episode. Two years after I picked up from 9th episode and completed till season 3 finale. And, I am still living in their world. Background music is so good, I am listening it over and over again, remembering all the scenes over and over again. Can't get the feeling out of me. Story is okay, but the setting, the presentation and the acting of the main two characters, especially carrie coon (playing Nora), will keep you on your seat. I wouldn't say it's a mush watch, but if you watch it till end, you will fall in love with the characters. I need to start watching another series, just to get over this one.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Don't watch if you don't want to relive high school
English is my second language, so words I use below may not be up to the mark.
This show is gut wrenching. It reminded me of high school, when I was bullied by stronger ones and I bullied the weaker ones. Of all the times that you didn't help a person who was in need. And, of all the times you kicked a person when he was down.
To all persons who are in high school and about to watch this show. High school may be brutal but if you find a purpose or a person with whom you can spend your life with. It does get better. Just don't bully any weaker person than you. Because, the worst memories aren't the ones of you being bullied but of you being bully yourself.
