The Opposite Of Sex – 1998

The Opposite Of Sex stars two of my favourite actress' – Lisa Kudrow and Christina Ricci. Needless to say, they were my main motivations for seeing this film. Expecting a fairly average film you might say I was a little shocked when this turned out to be a well scripted, well acted, suitably gritty and compelling drama. The Opposite of Sex is narrated by the appropriately cynical lead character, Dede Truitt (Christina Ricci). The narration is highly amusing and witty and provides the audience with a release during tense and heavily themed situations. Dede Truitt basically walks into her half brothers life (Martin Donovan) and causes a stir among his sister in-law (Lisa Kudrow) by stealing his boyfriend who was originally thought to be gay and now decides he is bisexual. The whole film is constantly asking questions about Sex and what it has done to humanity. It works on two levels, one being that it has heavy themes and can be coarse at times. However Lisa Kudrow offers comic relief playing a straight square teacher who disapproves of everything and everyone in life especially sex. That is until she finds Sex on her doorstep. The Opposite of Sex is a brilliant film, when Christina Ricci was in her prime. It deserved much more praise than it got which is such as shame. 9/10

Girl, Interrupted is a thought provoking, highly intriguing drama, with amazing and Oscar winning performances from Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Clea DuVall, Elizabeth Moss and Whoopi Goldberg.

SOME SPOILERS

The film is set in the 60s when a confused young woman named Susannah Kaysen (Winona Ryder) is admitted to a Mental Hospital. The doctors decide that Susannah has a borderline personality and is Promiscuous. Susannah doesn't even understand her illness so how can she recover from it?

Whilst in the Hospital Susannah befriends other inmates such as Polly the sweet, innocent burn victim (Elizabeth Moss), the quiet, shy pathological liar Georgina (Clea DuVall), the blonde confident anorexic girl Janet (Angela Bettis), the sexually abused girl with an eating disorder Daisy (Brittany Murphy) and Lisa (Angelina Jolie), the strong, confident Sociopath. During her stay Susannah and her friends provide the film with heart-warming, sad, humorous and psychological moments that truly capture what the book intended.

Girl, Interrupted is a well shot, brilliantly acted and well structured film with an effective storyline, which captivates audiences. Angelina Jolie deserved her Oscar but wouldn't have achieved the success if it wasn't for those supporting her. Winona Ryder showcased one of her best performances for this film and no other actress could have fit the role of Susannah as well as she did.

This film is fantastic and recommended to all.

Scream 3 (2000)
GOOD
9 March 2003
Scream 3 is the final chapter of this horror series and doesn't let us down! It puts the Scream trilogy to rest and includes thrills and screams along the way! It is no way near as good as the first two but I put this down to the fact a new writer was on board. Saying that Scream 3 still has the edge to it other horror films don't. This time we see Sidney secluded in the Hollywood hills so terror will never find her but when a new killer is on the loose; Sidney is forced out of hiding in order to help put a stop to these gruesome killings. I give Scream 3 8/10.

Disappointing
9 March 2003
This film was a disappointment. Having seen Diaz in other films and loving her, this film failed to move the earth for me. The jokes are pretty lame and I found the acting left a lot to be desired.

It is all based around a girl named Mary (Cameron Diaz) who is typically nice and caring and the whole movie focuses on 3 men battling to get with her and telling lies in order to do so. There's something about Mary, in my opinion is pretty bad despite other reviews and wastes the advantage of having a great cast.

I give this film 4/10

Scream 2 (1997)
GREAT!
9 March 2003
Scream 2 sees Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson team together once again to reunite Sidney Prescott with a masked killer This time we see survivors Sidney and Randy at college followed by Gale and Dewy after a series of copycat killings. Scream 2 is about as good as it could be as everyone knew the sequel could never be as good as the first movie but it still rocks! I rate it 9/10

Scream (1996)
TERRIFIC!
9 March 2003
Scream is the Halloween of the nineties and is a horror masterpiece which sees Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson team together to form this great film. It is focused on a town called Woodsboro which is being terrorised by a Psychopathic Killer. Scream stars top names like Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore, to name a few and the standard of acting is terrific. I recommend this film to anyone as it has something for everyone – horror, action and sometimes very dry humour. Scream is a masterpiece that pokes fun at itself. I rate it 10/10

EDGE OF SEAT HORROR
8 March 2003
I went to the cinema to see HALLOWEEN RESSURECTION with 4 friends. None of us had seen a single HALLOWEEN film but found this film really easy to understand! It is terrifying and had grown men and women screaming in the cinema! I found that this film managed to be simple yet original at the same time which is a pretty good acomplishment from the Director.

I reccomend this film to anyone who is ready to be scared and amazed at the same time.

8 Mile (2002)
AVERAGE
20 February 2003
This film stars top names like Brittany Murphey, Eminem and Kim Bassinger but despite this 8 Mile doesn't exactly shine. In this semi-autobiographical film Eminem does a pretty good job playing a white boy rapper striving for success to get him out of the trailer park he lives at with his mum (Bassinger)who gets beaten by her drunken lover. This film isn't terrible but it doesnt live up to the hype and in my opinion the only true star is Brittany Murphey who shines in each role she takes on. I think to truly enjoy this movie then you have to be an Eminem fan. I'm not so i don't appreciate it. On the whole this movie isn't bad it just isn't my type of film. I give it 6/10

Panic Room (2002)
FAB!
14 February 2003
Panic Room is a Modern Thriller that puts others to shame! It a starts when a newly divorced Mother and her child move into a truly individual townhouse in New York. Hidden in the master bedroom is a Panic Room for use in case of intruders entering the house. On the first night spent in the house, Meg wakes in the middle of the night to find three intruders in her home. Meg and her daughter flee into their Panic Room where they become trapped in a deadly game of Cat and Mouse. This film is exellantly shot with special effects that add to the deadly suspense. I rate this film: 9/10 :)

Give it a chance!
11 January 2003
This film may be predictable, but it is so in a good way. I found it fun yet thoughtful at the same time. Its a Romantic Comedy that has something about it that makes you laugh out loud or cringe with embarrassment! I reccomend this film to anyone who wants a good laugh and a good cry! I give it 8/10.

Fab!
6 January 2003
I first saw this movie at the cinema back in January and I loved it! One year on and i decided to buy it on video. When i first saw this film I thought that yes it was confusing but the Cast gave such a good performance that it made up for any confusion. Melissa Sagemiller gave a great lead and a persuading performance as the distressed heroine. Eliza Dushku, Angelena Featherstone, Casy Affleck and Wes Bently all gave great performances too. I now completely understand the film and I think anyone who saw it at the cinema should give it another chance. You just might enjoy it! So give Soul Survivors a try. I'm glad I did!
