Gunsmoke: The River: Part 1 (1972)
Wonderful Season Opener!
I loved this episode! Great characters, especially the kids, Jack Elam and his "bride", Slim Pickens, and of course Super Lawman Matt Dillon. The two-part 18th season opener may have elements of other stories - but there's hardly a totally original story out there. Great action, beautiful cinematography, warm and funny characters. With few exceptions I'm drawn into every episode of Gunsmoke. It's no wonder this show remained popular for 20 years! Even with some of the characters changes throughout the years it remained a wonderfully engaging and entertaining show. Life lessons, characters to love and root for - very endearing. Something television can truly be proud of!
Bloodline Detectives (2020)
STOP THE MUSIC!!!
The reason for my 10 rating appears after my rant and rave.
PLEASE stop the music and unecessary moderators! Why, oh why, do television shows insist on the loud, driving, irritating, DISTRACTING music throughout the show??? I have been unable to watch many interesting shows because I cannot tolerate the annoying, pointless background music. Why do we need a "host"? Why don't we need an appropriate host if we must have one? Nancy Grace adds nothing and, in fact, is a huge negative. She does not convey empathy or the solemnity of the topics, she speaks like the National Enquirer, she's loud, and for whatever reason she appears almost as a caricature of a series host. She has no function or expertise that I can see or hear. If it has to do with being a former prosecutor, it doesn't show and doesn't make her a scientist. She has nothing to do with the cases, crimes, or anyone involved. It makes me crazy to watch and listen to her just repeat what's already been said in a sensationalist tone of voice.
With that said, I find the topic of genetic genealogy extremely interesting, particularly as it applies to solving crimes. The cases covered are wide ranging and really show how incredible this technology truly is. It's worth watching - I just turn the volume low and the sub-titles on.
Rockaway (2017)
An Important Story
This film is much more than the sum of its technical parts. The reviews that dwell on that aspect don't get how well it was actually done, and how well this srory was told and mostly how important it was for us too see this. It's an intimate, personal story of a F*d up childhood. A childhood with slivers of good things between the whole mess. Personally, I felt the technical parts were done very well and I was completely engrossed in this slice of someone's life; how they viewed it, felt it, lived and ultimately survived it. It's heart-breaking and at the same time a loving tribute to the John Budion's brother and friends. His mother is the classic woman trapped in a cycle of violence trying to find a way to fix it or a way out, very nearly a casualty herself. Thank you to everyone involved! Having lived a confusing and problematic childhood I could relate to the seclusion and secrecy that the two brothers dwelled in everyday.
God's Favorite Idiot (2022)
I LOVE MELISSA!
I laughed till I cried! It's the Melissa I love (yet I know what a phenomenal actress in any genre she can be)! Now I love her husband as well! FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY.
Lizzie (1957)
Great Classic Film
I LOVE this movie! Eleanor Parker does an amazing job conveying three personalities. Joan Blondell plays the perfect caring, but booze-obssessed aunt who really can't understand or help Elizabeth. Richard Boone is always good as the serious professional, in this case Elizabeth's psychiatrist. Hugo Haas - great director and perfect interfering-but-with-good-intentions neighbor. The addition of Johnny Mathis singing "It's Not For Me To say" in the cocktail lounge is icing on the cake! I've watched this movie many times and it remains a favorite!
Drowning Mona (2000)
ONE OF MY TOP TEN ALL-TIME FAVORITES
Drowning Mona is ine of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It has become our cult favorite! I have watched it dozens of times -the first ten times I heard or saw something I hadn't previously. The characters, the dialog , all are absurdly ingenius and funny. The actors embody their characters and it's a total hilarious escape from everything.
The Ritz (1976)
Hilarious!
It's the stereotypical gay, straight, mob, Puerto Rican characters that make this movie SO funny. It's flamboyant, ridiculous, and a great time! Rita Moreno made me laugh til I cried. Super satisfying way to spend a couple hours.
Unhinged (2020)
Stupidly Violent
The worst movie I ever had the misfortune to watch. Using Russell Crowe as bait to watch an absurdly violent movie is a cheap trick. No story, just Crowe stalking, torturing, bashing people's heads in. I couldn't watch the whole thing because it was so offensive. Everyone involved must have really needed the money. They should be embarrassed by having participated in such worthless garbage. A complete vacuum of anything worthwhile.
Trader Horn (1973)
Disturbing
The film opens with scenes of an elephant herd agitated by human presence. One of the adult elephants moves towards the perceived threat. What follows is actual footage of an elephant being shot and the subsequent stress it causes the family pod. This could have been implied or done without having to witness such a senseless and vile act. I stopped watching at that point. I just did not need to see that.
