Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
To boldly go where no one has gone before...
(This review contains subtle and unspecific spoilers)
Who doesn't recognise that adventurously hopeful premise? How intrinsically true of the Star Trek universe!
My own understanding of that historic premise is the base for my very personal evaluation of what I have watched so far.
Over the past five decades the "exploring strange new worlds" is certainly not the only way Star Trek has achieved the above. For fans like myself is its being non conformist and the avoidance of the overly used and abused ingredients so widely present in the vast majority of past and even more so present television shows that makes Star Trek go where no one has had the guts to go to, a show that according to its canon is supposed to be inspiringly uplifting.
So, what has happened to that bold exploratory audacity? What has happened, in this new self proclaimed "Star Trek", to the innocent view of the universe, the optimism, the idealistic pursuit of high and noble principles, the quest for self-improvement and to the utopian vision of a future where all races work together as one?
Not your cup of tea? Fine, ask the replicator a drink you like, but don't offer us a cup of recycled lukewarm coffee when what we wanted is "Earl Gray Hot", it's insulting, the taste left in our mouths it's too conventional for it to be audacious or in any way authentic, or is this just a computer malfunction?
Whatever the case, it appears to me that all that this arbitrary version of Star Trek has "discovered" is that you're allowed to use vulgar expletives in space, and you've got to witness grim violence there and you must absolutely have to imply the presence of same sex relationship as well, because, after all... "no one had done it before", anywhere else in the galaxy, right?
Is it just me, or it all feel so undeniably and utterly bleak and out of place? A show that not unlike its Captain seem to showcase a natural aversion to the light, too dim and uncomfortably close to what we are already being subjected to not only on television and streaming programs but in our very modern society on this planet.
In all fairness, can this show and its creators legitimately claim to accurately represent even only partially what Star Trek is supposed to strive for? Can it be genuinely titled "Star Trek: Discovery"?
Perhaps I am only part of an "ageing and dwindling fan base" that sadly believes that if this is the version of our Star Trekking future in which Vulcans would happen to fly-by and detect our very first warp signature, well, they'd obliterate the spacecraft to smithereens, eliminate this planet from every known star chart, declare the quadrant a no-fly zone, increase their speed to maximum warp and never come again. It is, after all, only logical!
Live long and Prosper!
Striscia la Notizia (1988)
Best and Worst of Italian TV
Pure Italian satire, even though it has been around for quite some time, "Striscia" still makes people laugh while providing a service for those in need of being heard, by exposing the misdeeds of those in government positions and the like.
That is achieved through a TV news style, with news read to the public and reports from comedians/journalists/athletes and others so-called professionals.
Unfortunately, as in most television programs in Italy there's the exploitation of sex, obtained with the use of half-naked adolescent dancers as a tool to maximize the ratings, and that, with regrets, makes my rating for "Striscia" not higher than a seven.
Greggio and Iacchetti (The usual and most loved presenters) are undeniably the best suited for the program.
