Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Fun Movie That Unfortunately Starts To Turn MCU
Overall the movie is great when it comes to the kaiju scenes. The major problem is when it comes to the humans. Unlike past installments where the films are 100% serious this film starts to slide into Jurassic World and MCU territory becoming more comedy. They introduce a wannabe Chris Pratt-type character named Trapper to be an unnecessary future sequel love interest for female character Ilene Andrews. His biggest negative is that he gives the movie a cheap excuse to force in classic rock music into scenes where they don't belong. Nobody wants to hear Kiss play "I Was Made For Lovin' You" during a kaiju battle. Get that crap outta here! I had to remove 1 star because of this and there being no Godzilla theme.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
More Flash Gordon Than Star Wars [6/10]
As a Zack Snyder fan I can straight out say this movie is above average. It's not Star Wars, but more Flash Gordon (1980) without the cheese in visual style.
The plot is pretty simple following the template of Seven Samurai, but suffers from too much world building exposition. They say "it's much better to show than tell", but Rebel Moon counter acts that statement. Sometimes a single sentence will do. Look at Star Wars as an example. George Lucas didn't have the money to do tons of flashback sequences and used dialague, which was just as good or even better leaving it up to the audience's imagination. We didn't need a 10 minute sequence for Kora. That time could have been used to develop the other characters, who are sorely lacking in depth.
I know that Snyder loves to use slow motion to highlight moments, but he went a bit overboard with some shots. It was used where it really wasn't needed in some stituations.
Overall the movie is good, but it's very hard to digest in one viewing. It's like Underworld where it takes 2-3 times to absorb it all. If anything I'm looking forward to the longer R rated version.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Old School Horror
People are saying this movie it too slow. No, it isn't. This film is a throwback to 1930s classic horror movies Universal and 1960s from Hammer using today's special effects. The characters are well developed and Dracula isn't just a killing machine just to rack up a huge body count. Everything he does has a purpose.
The director did a solid job of setting the visual tone to give the sense of being in the past without making it feel artificial. The world felt used and grimey. One thing that would make it better visually is it was filmed in black and white like "The Lighthouse".
As for a very minor negative, the characters could have thought up a more reasonable solution when it came to defeating Dracula, but they went for the most drastic action.
Cobweb (2023)
Lionsgate Buried This Movie
Lionsgate should be ashamed of themselves for their complete lack of promotion for this entertaining horror film. I only happened upon it looking up future movies coming to the theater. They should have had more faith with the film, because it's way better the most horror movies like that overrated, jump scare, Conjuring Universe crap.
The director did a great job of setting up tone and it visually overflows with style that all modern day, generic horror moves lack.
The only minor flaw I'd give is that it should have been gorier with it having a R rating. I don't know if they were going for PG-13 and got stuck with that rating, but it's always better to go all out and cut out than hold back. There's good stuff here, but shots possibly could have been cut. Hopefully, there's an unrated version on home release with shots restored.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Pure Garbage
Once again no talent hack James Gunn recycles the cult sci-fi TV series Farscape formula to churn out another unoriginal movie. All he did was copy "Suicide Squad" and give it a R rating adding blood. He had a chance to do the comic book series right and make it a dead serious over the top 80s action movie, but he took the lazy way out by going the MCU way of jokes propelling the plot. Not one joke hit for me, because they were all unfunny.
You know Gunn was lazy in writing this because he put all his effort to get his actor friends Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker and his brother to play The Weasel in a meaningless opening sequence where the destraction team is beyond stupid getting themselves killed within 3 minutes.
If you want to see a great version of the Suicide Squad see the animated movie "Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay."
