Irreversible (2002)
1/10
Unwatchable
8 August 2004
Where to begin with Irreversible.... I know from having read other user comments that a number of people out there like Gaspar Noe's style with short sharp cuts and whirling perspective's. To the uninitiated (I include myself in this) this can be hard to watch and can leave you with a nauseating feeling. This however seems apt for the subject matter of this piece.

Stylistically I think the movie is well done, but that would be seriously overlooking the content of the film.

I'm not the type of person who has a weak disposition or feels squeamish at the sight of blood. I've sat through and enjoyed "A Clockwork Orange" and "Silence of the Lambs" and although disturbing in the exploration of violence, and the psychology of the criminal mind, I never felt that there was a gratuitous nature to the presentation of this subject matter. However I couldn't help but feel that the two scenes that define this film were unnecessarily violent and amounted to little more than a dressed up snuff movie.

The suggestion that by telling the story in reverse that somehow the movie ends on a pleasant note doesn't hold water for me. I was so shell shocked that even the sight of Monica Belucci frolicking naked made me feel a little uneasy, after witnessing her humiliation earlier in the movie.

I think it's a disappointment that such an artistically shot movie should gratuitously present such horrific subject matter. I'd suggest that Gaspar Noe should turn his attention to something more worthy of his ability.

Tango & Cash (1989)

Tasty & Cheddar

I love this movie!!! Not cause it's well acted, not cause of the "intelligent" direction but purely for the its enigmatic cult cheese status.

This is pure cheese at its best!! The one liners and snappy dialogue that sustain a movie like this are poorly conceived and abysmally delivered.

Example: Ray Tango: When this is over, we have to pay Jabba the Hutt here a visit.

Gabriel Cash: I'll bring the chainsaw. Ray Tango: I'll bring the beer.

The action sequences are quite well done which deliver the main highlights for my money. The escape from prison was great. Lots of explosions and special effects. Michael Jeter playing the little dweeby inventor guy "Skinner" is great as Cash's off-sider.

Get along and see this movie if you want something braindead, poorly conceived and fun fun fun (till your daddy takes the T-Bird away!).

Sad end to an innovative concept.
30 November 2003
I have heard a great deal of talk from Matrix purists (akin to Star Wars nuts) who have made the point that the first movie was amazing and the Wachowski's should have left it at that. Perhaps they are right I'm not yet decided.

Despite this I enjoyed Matrix Reloaded, even if only for entertainment value alone. However, Matrix Revolutions is the biggest bomb this year. I know that one should not expect too much from a sci-fi trilogy that was only ever intended as a stand alone movie, but having said this all the hard work that went into creating these characters, this world, this movie, is completely undone by the crap served up in Revolutions.

Acting is not Keanu or Carrie-Ann's strong suit but they do have good on-screen chemistry. Neo and Morpheus' relationship is strong and a feature of particularly the first movie and to a lesser degree the second. Where were these characters? Who gives a toss about Link and Zee or Captain Tanaka and that stupid kid? It is possible I might have, had the acting been stronger and the dialogue better i.e Kid: "I've never completed the training program." Tanaka: "Neither have I."

It's lines like this that made me physically sick and despite the special effects fest the whole movie was very pedestrian. It had completed departed from the philosophy of the first movie and just seemed like a gratuitous use of special effects which encased a very hollow movie.

Perhaps if I had've had a couple of joints this might have been funny like "Halfbaked" or "Scary Movie" but as a conclusion to what could've taken over from Star Wars as one of the best Sci-Fi sagas of all time, I think not.

Why was this movie so controversial?
16 November 2003
When I first heard about this movie my main motivation for seeing it was related to the controversy that surrounded it. I had heard all sorts of things said about what a misogynistic piece of garbage this was, but not afraid of a few negative reviews I went and saw it.

It's hard to say what impressed me most about this movie. I thought the performances were excellent, the dialogue was sharp and inciteful and the story intense. Aaron Eckhart's narcissistic, callous performance was amazing.

I cannot understand how this movie is misogynistic in any way whatsoever, as the characters are so hideous there is no way known you could empathise with them or consider their behaviour as anything other than abhorrent. I thought that the snapshot of the corporate male dominated workplace was fantastic and the picture it painted of testosterone charged males excellent.

The ending was amazing and I recall leaving the cinema and not being able to speak for a full 10 minutes.

See this movie.

This movie had so much potential but never delivered
11 November 2003
There were so many reasons why this movie could have been great. I'll give you three.

1. Sienna Guillory. She is extremely hot in this movie and was the reason I chose to watch it in the first place.

2. Tim Curry. Amazing bad guy and I always get excited seeing him in movies (even Home Alone 2).

3. Jason Donovan. For all you Aussies and Poms out there, this is a rare treat. Former Neighbours star 80's heart-throb dressed in drag selling drugs.

However none of these things nor the fact that the movie is about the drug/rave culture managed to make this movie even remotely interesting. The script was dull, the performances ordinary and despite the scenes with J.D and any scene with Sienna I found everything about this movie pretty passe.

How did this movie get made??
10 September 2003
There are so many things that are wrong about this movie I don't know where to start. For anyone who has read the comic PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! don't see this as you may want to organize a lynch mob for Joel Schumacher.

Story - ???? Characters - Batman (Ham), Robin (Horny teenager), Batgirl (Hot but dull), Freeze (Arnie - Comedy isn't your strong suit) and Poison Ivy (Uma how could you?)

Rating - Makes Waterworld float 0.1 out of 10
