Uttama Villain (2015)
A good film
Uttama Villain is a good film. Especially I think it would have been the India's answer to Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman.
Interestingly uttama villain has some similarities with bird man. With due respect I don't think its copied or an inspiration. But Uttama Villain lack what bird man had. A visionary /extra ordinary director like Alejandro and a great technical crew.
Uttama villain doesn't come together as a cohesive whole. Not able to communicate with the audience sometimes, a beat missing. I think problem is the crew which Kamal Hassan choose to bring his vision to screen especially director of uttama villain. And also Kamal Hassan always caters to wrong audience (current generation of Tamil audience),because of that he has to compromise the quality of his vision ,thus final product doesn't satisfy neither of the audience(eg:Hey ram, Aalavandhan, Anbe Sivam, Kuruthipunal, Virumaandi) Critic Baradwaj Rangan said "Kamal Haasan's writing is so dense, overstuffed and layered. It's always a question whether directors can come up with the kind of wit and timing needed to fully make the transition from page to screen. Best Kamal Haasan movies are probably locked up inside his head, where they reside in the most perfect possible manner."
Ship of Theseus (2012)
Ship of Theseus is simply a Brilliant Piece of ART
The film Ship of Theseus is simply a Brilliant Piece of ART. Film is like a ship of thoughts which sail towards the sea made up of enlighten thoughts, it can be breakdown to a thought provoking at any minute after we watch the film.
Film is about an old philosophy named ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus' paradox, life of thesis which is proposed by Plutarch. Plutarch questions whether the ship would remain the same if it were entirely replaced, all its parts piece by piece. Also what would happen if the original planks were gathered up after they were replaced, and used to build a second ship? Which ship, if either, is the original Ship of Theseus? The film is strongly piercing for the actuality, cogency and significance of this philosophy. The co-writer and Director of the film Anand Gandhi eloquently expressed ideas of death, morality, ethics and responsibility through structuring the struggles of each of the three central characters life.
Aaliya Kamal (Aida El-Kashef) is a visually impaired and artistry photographer in the process of undergoing a cornea transplant that will restore her vision. But after her successful surgery she strives to fit in to her newfound sense and experience of light, which eventually result in her photography.
Maitreya (Neeraj Kabi), an erudite sage Jain monk, who filed a petition to ban animal testing in India. When he is diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, his reluctance towards medication is questioned and also his belief and ethics. He had to choose liver transplantation to stay alive by compromising his ideologies and for those passionate around him.
A very young stockbroker, Navin (Sohum Shah), has just had his kidney transplanted. He soon learns of a case of organ theft involving an penurious bricklayer, Shankar. His initial fear is that his new kidney originally belonged to Shankar. Further investigation proves otherwise, but Navin takes matters into his own hands and confronts the actual recipient in Stockholm.
Finally we get to know that all three central characters (six more persons, outside story structure) organs are from the same person who died recently in a car accident. Thus the film ends in a question which is inspired from the philosophy itself, "Whether the life of a person (here 3 central characters) will change or not after their transplantation of organs from another person?" Going through fast assumption from the life of three central characters it can be say, there is, yes there is change in life. As Aaliya regained sense of vision relinquishing her photography skills. Maitreya couldn't even hold off his beliefs to stay alive as beloveds questioned his way to get his enlightenment. While Navin changed his perspectives of life towards the people who struggle to live in this gigantic merciless world.
But when we get into the deeper analysis, film is discussing more and more. Basically philosophies, ideologies, beliefs, moralities, and many more. The Thesues paradox to human beings is, "All the cells in a person's body regenerate entirely in seven years. An individual goes through a shift psychologically, ideologically and physically. Is it still the same person?" .
The film ends with a little video showing interiors of a cave which is also related to another philosophy known as Allegory of the Cave. Aaliya's comments about the book perfume, the young lawyer Charvaka and Maitreya conversation will light us to new perspectives of the atheism, morality and existence. Navin's searching of Shankar's house will bring the factual condition of penniless people in Mumbai (mostly in the country India itself) I must say the film did hundred percentage justification to the subject as the creator keep pushing as towards the ideology about Theseus' paradox at each stages of story. The low budget film which is superbly pictured in Cannon EOS-1 D Mark, depicts the skill of Director Anand Gandhi.
Acting section is what made enliven to me, actors in this film just fly off whole the acting lessons and just live like a real flesh human. Even though three central characters brilliantly done their job, the most appealing job is done by Neeraj Kabi, through his acting he really lived as a Liver cirrhosis patient experiences Loss of appetite, feeling sick, ,vomiting, tiredness and weakness.
Surely Indian National film award committee made a correct decision to choose this film as Best Film of India 2013, fully deserved it. Must watch for all classic film lovers.
My rating: 9/10
Artist (2013)
ARTIST'' a film which got enough contents for thoughts and enough contents to Discuss.
About the movie, as I know this movie is an adaptation of a English novel " Dreams in Prussian Blue: by Paritosh Uttam".I was sure that the film got some real story base. And when the film starts rolling I could feel the same. Movie starts with the appearance of Gayathri (Ann Augustine) and the movie tell us the story of the relationship between Gayathri and Micheal (Fahadh Faasil) through her point of view. Movie take us to understood status of their relationships both in present and past, as Gayathri remembers their first sight , hang outs , conversations etc., which is from a Coffee shop where Micheal supposed to come and she inquires about it through mobile.
Gayathri shocks her parents by choosing to study in Arts College, Trivandrum. She was from a family that is little conserved traditional Tamil family. She admired by seeing a senior in college named 'Micheal agnelo' who was an eccentric talented artist, first meet itself made an impact in each other. They started hangout together, chitchat and from one day she starts to meets him at his flat (Didn't it come too fast), anyway they planned to live together without any social string.
Gayathri still in a teenage phase, struggles to move in a deeper level in relationship with Micheal and she finds hard to cope up with Eccentric partner's lifestyle. But her woes increase further when he lost his sight and become blind .The movie answers what changes it made on Gayathri? How Micheal Agnelo tackles this? Where their relationship going? As I am said earlier I had expectations about this flick .The fact is, movie is in between 'a level' where my expectation and disappointment level stays. It is not because movie is bad or time killer or money wasting. It is because movie needs some more push to reach the expectation level'.
As we all know, Shyamaprasad( Shyamaprasad )is a unique director in Malayalam film industry as he made a platform himself apart from all other directors in the industry all the time being. As usual Shyamaprasad's Artist story plot level is in a 'level' where other film's plots can't exist to stay and a level where others dare to look(Prime example is the exceptional movie Ore Kadal {Ore Kadal} ). But here the problem is Shyamaprasad doesn't want to go beyond that level, he is satisfied with his current subjects and with the same treatment he is implementing for these subjects .He is stuck on these level ,up to 'Arike' ,this was acceptable . Please Sir, a polite request, 'Time has come to think about it!'.
In Artist he is focused only on the certain emotions, mannerisms of the characters or situations and not whole the character or situations of life and this is what I miss in this film. When you watch scene by scene, there won't be any problem but when you take whole the movie there is something fishy. These things only comes to matter only when a film takes on a realistic approach Shyamaprasad's brilliance is his realistic approach of storytelling. It made me disappointed, film was not purely justified to this approach, where his brilliance always score. I think it is because Shyamaprasad implemented a Scene oriented direction rather than story based in 'Artist'. Story telling through Artist's (Micheal's) point of view would be more suits to Shyamaprasad.
As my brother said if this novel" Dreams in Prussian Blue '' read by any other screenwriters in Malayalam industry other than Shyamaprasad, they would only focus on the struggle of artist and struggle of Gayathri's in a society where they always hurts them, yes ! The whole sentimental stuffs', there won't be any intellectual approach and any focus in artistic or eccentric elements, internal clashes between them etc.
Fahad's characterizing and acting were interesting in the first half but an eccentric Acting is not constant throughout the movie, but some high levels of effort from him made balance to it. Once the movie enters in to second half he really stand on the feet. But I didn't get any deepened and heartened urges of a creative artistic mind (except from his eyes) of artist Micheal from his acting at some parts, which is strongly needed in the film. Anyway fahad deserves a huge applause.
Ann Augustine ( Ann Augustine ), This is her best performance till date. But I am sorry to say, one who really pulls the film back is Ann and characterization of Gayathri, because of two reasons One-Her Characterization, as the movie tries to tell a man-woman relationship through a women's point of view, which lacks some points that should be projected in a realistic approach of relationships.
Second-Her acting, even though character needs a lot of support from the actress, Ann failed at some important sections that really hurts the film's soul. It is not expected from Shyamaprasad's movie.(eg Meera Jasmine in Ore Kadal,Shobhana in Agnisakshi,Mamatha in Arike,Sheela in Akale) This film's plot is a universal plot which can be shown to any part of the world, because it contains some real artistic contents. So team should have been aware of this and must taken care of it.
I shared only little things about the movie and I am not concluding this not to watch the film but to tell you 'go and watch' because there is more things to share about the movie after you watch. ''ARTIST'' is a must watch film and got enough contents for thoughts and enough contents to Discuss. In one sentence this movie have only a small drop hole in between Very Good and Class!!!!! My Rating: 6/10
