Fawlty Towers (1975)
The Classic.
Like Bach , or Mozart is to music, so is Fawlty towers to TV sitcom. Never surpassed, and I don't think it ever will. Its also so re-watchable so quotable, so funny yet so perfectly constructed. The humor is so intuitive, even as a a child the slapstick is funny, but so many layers can be found under. Script, delivery, acting, slapstick, verbal humor, English and other social commentary/mannerisms all orchestrated without a single spurious second to be missed. Anyway after having watched it for so many years, and so many times, its time to add my glowing review, and thanks to all involved.
Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010)
A French adventures / fantasy great.
Well, I love Luc Bessons fantasies, and The Fifth element is one of my all time favorites. If you love that film, just run and see this one, and never mind what the high brow critics have to say. I have not read Tardi's novels, though I'd like to, but my French level is inadequate. Even though, I can not help feeling the spirit of the original was kept, though of course some plots were added. Being a Francophile certainly helps enjoying this romp, but surely is not necessary. I watched it with my 10 year old children and we enjoyed the film equally. The production values and costumes especially are gorgeous, and I just love that Besson sense of humor. Although sometimes a bit juvenile, or slapstic I'll take it any way it comes. I heard the movie did not do well at the box office in France and just can not understand why, I do hope it gets a wider worldwide release and certainly hope there is a sequel.
We Will Rock You: Queen Live in Concert (1983)
Best live show film ever
Well what can I say ? This film is amazing and Queen is amazing here. The crowd kinda sucks though but it does no detract from the viewing pleasure. And what pleasure it is ! You must , and I repeat must , in this day and age get the Blue-ray. Previous comments before 2007 I guess complained about the poor video quality in the DVD, but the Blue-Ray shows other unsung heroes (at least on the IMDb comments) of this show, and those are the director and also the cinematographer. I really feel that the cinematography here is exceptional, and probably the best one I have yet seen of a live show film. In my view this concert and cinematography are much better than Scorsese's Last Waltz. Freddy just seems so alive and close, and the lighting and colors are as dazzling as the music and performance is. Other people here already commented how good the show is, and Queen are of course legendary, but to this I just have to add - You absolutely must watch this on BlueRay (Or the film theater) otherwise justice would not be done. I give this film a solid 10/10 ....
