Unusual, violent, Asian
30 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
»Man and War, Part III« (Jenseits der Hoelle) is a Japanese production from 1973 dealing with the Russian-Japanese-Chinese conflict of the 1930s. It is a mediocre production but in contrast to many other baddies it has a constant storyline and believable, non-heroic acting. The movie is extremely violent and follows a Japanese company from their training to bloody battles. They get beaten a lot by their officers, burn down villages, shoot women and children, then most of them die themselves gruesome deaths when Russian tanks attack in the real big battle following up. A very unusual movie for both its time and cultural background. It is part III of a Japanese movie series. A DVD box exists for the Asian market.

Powerhouse of a War Movie!
23 January 2006
The movie gets 10 Points for action and 2 points for ideology. That makes 6 points. Wanna know why? BHD is a roller-coaster ride through urban close combat with a realistic portray of war on the ground. This movie is a lot of fun to watch because of its drive and the beautiful camera work.

What weakens the impression of most US war movies is their ideological approach: BHD tells us that the US went to war to protect human rights, not their oil interests. In reality about 1000 Somalis and twenty US soldiers died in this conflict. You will remember every dead American character – but not one of the dead Somalis.

Got it?

For extremists only!
20 December 2005
This episode movie uses demons, meditation and a strange sect as its vehicle for the ultimate traumatic horror movie: the whole atmosphere of this film is extremely frightening though you never believe the esoteric background that is supposed to be there! The people doing the movie obviously never had real contact to the Baghwan ideology. But who cares? I don't think John Wayne ever was a professional cowboy nor was Louis De Funes a french Policeman. Anyway, there are some professional actors in this flick doing their best, some horror movie buffs just playing actors. Good old German Matthieu Carriere plays a spiritual healer in the last episode. Attention: The special effects are not for those with weak stomachs: eyelids are cut off, a guy skins himself alive and there goes your breakfast! If you are into splatter and gore but to old to take Fulci seriously – give these young film makers a try.

Germans portrayed like Rambo's Russians
13 March 2005
The movie is important because so little war movies on world war one have been done. The huge number of US-productions on the Vietnam war and world war two seem to have inspired this one. You do not take a big risk making war movies for the US market today. Anyway, I liked it as a great, exciting action movie that gives you a lot of atmosphere on how life on the front lines might have been. The way the Germans are portrayed is ridiculous. That is a pity because otherwise it could have been a realistic picture. Here Germans do not have much more character than the Russians in Rambo - First Blood Part II if you know what I mean. Georg W's voters may like this propaganda, every soldier and ex-soldier like me will laugh at this Hollywood sequences in a generally good action movie.

Better than Ingmar Bergman.
5 February 2004
This Movie goes to the depths of a young girls soul, moving each and every part of us, touching dark places like nobody before. A hot, pumping powerhouse of a movie and a highlight in german film making. I would call it a genre in itself. It is a picture that shook the lost generation of the late seventies and woke them up emotionally. It feels so good to look at it realizing it has lost not an ounce of its intensity. A critical look at puberty blues and young girls desires. Watch it with your children. Watch also: Story of Ricky.
