Sorry for Your Loss (2018)
Raving Reviews?
I don't know where the raving reviews came from, I don't want to be negative about the other reviews but I really can understand what they saw that I didn't. I saw a couple that said best show ever and others on how it made them cry. What I saw was uninspired acting. The writing wasn't terrible but it just wasn't good acting. I really like Elizabeth Olsen and Mamoudou Athie, they just didn't cut it here. I'm thinking the director just didn't ask enough from them.
I think a lot of us have been in the same situation one or more times in our lives. From the reviews I was really expecting some gut wrenching drama but the only time I even got a little emotional was when they had to put their dog down. Throughout the series I kept asking myself if I even cared about any of the characters. Sounds cold, I know. I promise I'm not a cold person I probable get choked up more than the average person when watching TV or movies. It's just that Sorry for you loss fell way short.
Under the Skin (2013)
Wow, that was awful!
To be fair I only watched the 1st 38 minutes but O. M. G. It was certainly a wasted 38 minutes. I kept waiting and waiting and waiting but nothing. I swear I felt like I was watching a bad 60's zombie movie. I know if I read a lot of the reviews I'd find a bunch where people asked "what am I watching?"
I cannot remember the last time I didn't watch a full movie, I always feel like I've invested so much time to see what might happen or if the movie could redeem itself. I saw the title of one review that said "mesmerizing". I have to believe that person was doing peyote.
I'm sorry, this movie is just junk in my opinion.
The Upside (2017)
I give it a 10 and here's why.
I agree with @don-666 . Most of these low ratings are kind of snobbish. The Upside brought a French movie to a wider audience, was extremely well-acted and was very entertaining. I would rate this an 8 but I'm just going to bump it up to a 10 to even out the stupid 1s and 2s.
Somewhere (2010)
Yikes
Coppola. Shmoppola, I don't care if it was written and directed by the Pope-ola,
THIS IS THE WORST movie I have seen in many, many years. I just sat there waiting and waiting for this movie to start. A previous reviewer said the scenes were too long, I couldn't agree more. At one point there was a scene of the main character and his daughter lying by a pool (with no apparent reason since there was no dialog) and the camera just pans, and pans, and pans backward for over a minute (I thought we might go to satellite view with this one) how ridiculous. And how about the scene where the screen went black? It was black for like 30 seconds. I thought there was something wrong with my TV and actually got off of my couch to check.
And speaking of dialog, where did that go? At one point the 2, father and daughter, go to Italy for some sort of award presentation, this is a good 30 minutes into the movie, and in the 10 minutes or so in Italy, the Italian dialog was twice as much as the previous 30 minutes of English dialog. Come on!!!
All in all, my recommendation is to spend your 97 minutes doing ANYTHING else. Even a game of tiddlywinks is deeper than this movie.
Hey Hollywood, good call on letting this one go to the screen.
Oh, by the way... Why did I give it a 2 instead of a 1? Because Elle Fanning is a great young actress, as simple as that.
