Fantastic Locations
11 April 2011
The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe remains the best of the Narnia movies so far. That story is a rightful classic and fondly remembered by kids of all ages. The movie version was fabulous and a lot of that was down to the obvious chemistry between the young actors playing the Pevensies.

Dawn Treader suffers slightly when relying on the two younger siblings for it's emotional center despite Georgie & Skandar turning in good performances. The film doesn't quite feel the same without Susan & Peter but I know it would have been a travesty for them to appear in this film. I found Will Poulter's acting a touch overblown even for a fantasy movie but these are minor points as he come's good in the end.

All in all I enjoyed the movie very much. A proper boy's own adventure (& girl's) with great photography and fabulous fantasy locations. The ending was pretty moving with Lucy & Edmund saying goodbye to Narnia for the last time.

Seems they are filming The Magician's Nephew next which looks cool.

A Beacon of Mediocrity

After reading the reviews I really wasn't expecting anything from this movie but I had absolutely nothing else to watch. Actually I'm glad I did watch it as there are some nice ol' skool spooky moments in the movie, I would say it's worth a watch on a cold dark night.

Definitely a straight to video movie done on the cheap, the actors were a mixed bag of low level TV actors and failed movie stars. Teri Polo was actually quite good in the lead and was a charming presence. Most of the others were acceptable and a few were just plain awful. The female cop and the landlord stand out as terrible for me but I couldn't decide if it was the actors or the direction at fault.

It gets of to a clichéd start with all the usual creepy happenings. There is some nice photography in a few scenes but it's obvious the production didn't have a large budget. The last 20 minutes turn into some 70s schlock horror B movie with some film school quality make-up effects. Definitely gets to the so bad it's good stage.

The plot didn't make a lot of sense at the end but if you make it that far you won't really care.

And Soon Straight To DVD
5 January 2011
Good things first, some very nice cinematography of the landscapes. Cool looking deserted town that looks like something from a nuclear holocaust. Now that's out of the the way, on to the bad...

Clichéd characters. The Ellie character is just plain annoying and whilst I'm not a prude her behaviour just invited trouble - she's in an unknown country surrounded by strangers and acts like a complete whore. The good guy character hints at some promise but is taken out of the equation too easily. No inventiveness applied here, nothing you haven't seen a million times. Plus the female leads look like famine victims, especially Ellie - neither of them would have had the strength to fight off any kind of attack. I don't know if this is what Hollywood considers sexy nowadays but if so you can keep it.

Only rent if there is absolutely nothing else.

Effective Chiller

This one sneaked under the radar and I had not heard of it until I saw it so didn't know what to expect.

It may be a relatively low budget STV but this was a very effective spooky story. Some excellent brooding cinematography and orchestral music created a tense and cold atmosphere. It had me hooked right until the end all the while wondering if the supernatural premise was gonna hold out till the credits all the while trying to second guess who the perpetrator was - there were so many options as to who could be behind the situation, the guard, the guards in the control room, the VET, the woman, the husband, the old woman, the girlfriend. The cast of little known actors all do a good job and M Night Shaylaman produces.

Well worth a rent.

Visual Heaven

I have been waiting for this movie to arrive on BD since last year. I had never heard of the book but saw a glimpse of some early imagery of Suzie in the inbetween that I found captivating.

In the months leading up to the movie I had seen lots of negative reviews and I think I prepared myself to be disappointed - this didn't happen. I found the movie moving and well acted.

After watching the movie I then went and read the book to get deeper into the narrative. Books are not movies and movies are not books, you could never hope to include everything from the book in the movie.

Excellent acting from all - I do agree that Rachel Weisz was underused but she still added weight to the story even if you had to read the book to really understand her character. The visuals are amazing on bluray, I don't know if I've seen better this year.

Typical derivative big action small plot stuff. Quite well produced I suppose and if you can turn off your cynical brain reasonably enjoyable. Features all the standard stereotypes you would expect in a movie of this calibre.

Gung-ho Heroe Marine - check Disfigured Mad Scientist bent on world domination - check Stuck-up but kick-ass hot girl - check Comic relief black sidekick - check Gruff & Highly Respected Commander - check Uber Martial Arts Bad Guy Nemesis - check

Pretty standard fare with decent actors however. Jonathan Pryce and Dennis Quaid must have had a free summer last year. Sienna Miller was average but not to harsh on the eyes. Rachel Nichols is pretty awesome on the eyes as was her leather catsuit. Channing Tatum - this guy gets roles based purely on his pectoral muscles rather than his acting muscles. He delivers a performance so wooden at times I thought he had been replaced by a shop dummy.

The production is decent but as with a lot of modern movies falls back on C.G.I. which for many things just looks really bad. Thr gratuitous Polar bear couldn't have looked worse if they had got the producer's kid to just draw the thing straight onto the celluloid.

If you're at a loose end and there is nothing else available it's an average popcorn movie.

Overrated

I watched this movie based on the reviews on this very site. Whilst I did enjoy the movie I feel that some of the reviews here are vastly higher than they should be. I've heard talk of this being one of the best British movies of all time - nonsense.

It's low budget and has a grimy Northern setting. I did like some of the scenery but better locations could have been chosen. Lots of it has the feel of a middle-class Northern suburb where I feel a more deprived setting would have made the story more believable. Photography was quite amateur as was the direction.

The story didn't add up to me. The twist was effective but I don't feel the soldier's brother would have done what he did - there was no real reason to. The soldier's subsequent actions therefore seemed way over the top although I think the director was asking the question is he the hero or the villain. The gang came across as regular lads who took things a step too far. Plus the actors were too old for their roles especially the last guy with the wife and kids whose acting was dire. The entire last section seemed very contrived to me.

Considine was good however, the early scene where he turns from the meek stranger to snarling tiger to unsettle the dealer was great. All in all worth watching but could have been much better with a developed story and some better direction.

Mindless Derivative Crap
3 October 2009
Got hold of this movie at a very cheap price ;) Wasn't expecting much and wasn't disappointed.

I would be quite happy if all the characters died cos I really couldn't muster any interest in any of them. Good effects but nothing that hasn't been done before - reminiscent of Armageddon and War of the Worlds. Absolutely god awful puerile humour, especially the stereotype 'black' twin robots.

"I'm bout get up in yo ass" "pop a cap" "Ya'll better believe that s1>it"

etc, etc

Got about 1 hour in before turning it off. Will appeal to the easily pleased, low IQ, 12 year old male redneck only.
