Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022)
A misfit of personality
Good attempt but poor delivery. SLB uses his typical approach of heavy dresses, songs but fails to convey the punch. Alia was too young too tidy for the role.
Bajirao Mastani (2015)
excellent movie. much needed breath of fresh air
this movie helps restore the fast depleting hopes with Bollywood movies. The passion with which this movie is made shines through some class acts from each involved. the animation and sets allow a submerging experience. Ranveer offers a brilliant performance and a very promising future. His accented Hindi and well pronounced Marathi complete him in his role as Bajirao.
Deepika and Priyanka are best fits in their roles and don't feel off track even for a bit. Priyanka does a good job of conveying with her expressions more than her words. The placement of songs is done nicely.
a must watch for all moviegoers and history enthusiasts. the movie leaves us all with a good message at the end.
Mary Kom (2014)
Waited, expected, disappointed
What do you do when you have an awe-inspiring real life story that saves you some ink and some brains to write one. Certainly not do what the movie makers of Mary Kom have done !
To start off, the movie is missing a backbone. It does not have a progression, a central theme that drives any movie. It has a confused and flimsy stand on what the makers are trying to show. for ex. if the idea was to show Mary's struggle to become a boxer, the movie fails to do so as it spends just 15 minute to show Mary's path to becoming a World Champion. You can barely feel the pain or associate to the struggle.
The movie also fails in its attempt to show a decent boxing match. The shoddy camera work, direction and editing give a feeling of an amateur film-maker's job.
The background score fails to hit the highs as it tries to overuse the local (Manipuri) folk Alaap and rhythms.
Priyanka Chopra is a good actor, but certainly not for this movie. You would expect a rough face and a sturdy frame to depict a boxer. If i want to watch an inspiring movie based on a true story, I am okay if its not a star studded cast. Imagine watching a Gangs of Wasseypur where Hritik Roshan replaces Nawazuddin Siddiqui. You cannot enact everything. Sometimes you are just not meant to be.
The pain is further aggravated when you experience 'Bollywoodization' of something that would have been best enjoyed in it raw flavors as- is. The melodramatic performances and predictable events make it very difficult for you to appreciate the essence of the movie.
The national anthem at the end of the movie after her victory surely does not serve the purpose of charging your emotional batteries any further, rather is demeaning for the nations' pride especially when no one around you is standing.
Alas, there isn't a whitener to fix this. My respect to Mary Kom (the champion).
