The Babadook (2014)
Not what you expect
I saw this film on Copenhagen pix yesterday. The movie was compared to "the orphanage", and even though i liked that film i was a bit in doubt if i should go for it because i was not in the mood for a heavy emotional, mother and son horror-drama. But its everything but. Sure its horror, sure its drama, but the tone is very different from the Spanish movies around same kind of subject which are very serious. This is way more fresh, snappy and sometimes funny actually, without being lame. But also creepy, its the change of moods thats freaky. Nice style. The actors are supreme and the whole socialrrealistic scene around it is far out and overexagerated, which the horror part also is. But it works, because its a metaphorical movie describing a feeling. Its highly original. If you expect the same supernatural children horror movie As you have seen before, think twice. This is new, this is cool, different. The best movie i have seen in a year. Serious. It never gets melodramatic, its fast, entertaining and a bit psychedelic. Very refreshing. And smart, clever. It has it all. I am a big fan.
Magic Magic (2013)
ACTUALLY scary... Not in the kliche kind if way
Just a quick one... Just wants to say that people that reviewed this film and didn't like it, didn't go with the terms of the film... Its a masterpiece for sure, I would say the best semi horror film I have seen this year. It IS actually scary, compared to the typical 5 youngsters takes a trip to a house in the forest" kind of film... The whole uncertainty of the story.. The subtle hollow feeling of not knowing why Alicia behaves as she does... Just the fact that the way its build so different from what you would expect is a value to me.. I don't watch boring shock effect horrors.. I kind of was thinking a little bit of the movie from 2001 called "Wendigo", not that the story is similar at all, but in its unforeseen storyline and the closeness of the characters... Watch it if you spooky movies that plays with the media itself, don't watch it if you like random shock effect typical slasher films or ghost story with predictable endings.. This is the real deal.. Loving it.. 100%
Babycall (2011)
"Dark Water" in Norway, just without water...
Wonder why nobody didn't compare this to the Japanese horror classic "Dark water".. The setting is kind of the same.. I loved Dark water, and I liked Babycall as well, even though it was a i bit more messy, and the plot felt a little too "constructed".. But its still good.. Noomi Rapage is great in the role of a young mother on the verge of mental breakdown.. As in many new age horror movies we have a mother moving into a suburban ghetto apartment, after having troubles with her ex husband abusing their son (just like in Dark water).. She hears some strange screams on her baby alarm, and the story starts to unfold.. The atmosphere and the puzzle is well made, but the plot to easy figure in big terms.. Screenplay and acting is good.. Story a bit too mainstream for my taste, but still thrilling at times for sure.. Noomi Rapage does a very good job, lots of tension.. The sceneries and the suspense works, but I missed a little originality to the story.. But bottom line, and enjoyable ride, that could have been better with a more simply story.. A little too many threads for it own good.. Still i give it 7 cause, its well done and I am a sucker for subttle slow semi horror movies...
