Another Overrated film from Cameron
13 February 2010
I've given it 5 because the special affects are truly excellent.

But that is all. For a film that's action-packed, there just wasn't any excitement in it. The plot was fair, but I had expected something a little more intelligent from a sci-fi film. For a film set on a planet far away, its inhabitants' culture was indistinguishable from that of human beings - they laughed at funny things, they got angry and their entire body language was just like humans. Maybe they thought it would make it more accessible, but I started watching the film with a sense of wonder at what beings on the other planet would be like and that sense of wonder was crushed very quickly. I don't like paying to have my sense of wonder crushed, thank you.

There was one moment of surprise in it for me, which I won't spoil but this did not make it worth the 162 minutes of boredom I endured. I honestly couldn't wait for this film to end and my boyfriend was furious about how bad it was for an hour afterwards - I had to calm him down by getting to a pub as quickly as possible.

If you just want to see state of the art graphics, then go, but don't expect anything more than an average film that had a great deal of money poured into it.

Break (III) (2008)

Truly not watchable
13 February 2010
The opening scene was good and it went steadily downhill after that. The script was beyond bad, as it went way beyond artistic-licence and made no effort to be even the tiniest bit credible.

The characters behaved in ways that made no sense and in the unlikely event that you get drawn into it, I think you'll find one disappointment after another because of this fundamental flaw.

It felt like the director was trying too hard to make a stylish film noir. In this he failed abysmally, because there was a complete lack of subtlety, which made the entire effort fall flat on its face.

Like many, I expected more of a film with such a cast, so I was very disappointed.

wonderful, though I couldn't make out much of what they were saying
17 January 2006
I did love the film - I'm just surprised on my quick browse that no-one else had problems following the dialogue. There were some really key moments, that I strained my ears for, but couldn't make a word out. I'm English, but all the same, as it's been released here, it really is important that we are able to follow what they're saying. I'm used to struggling with the odd word here and there, but to not understand whole sentences for much of the film was really frustrating.

I've given it 8 stars because it was a very good film despite the language problem - I was expecting a mushy romance, but what I got was far more believable than that. I was really great acting, much of it very subtle - this really pulled me into feeling what they were supposed to be feeling. I thought it was one of those very special films that stay with you.

Out of Bounds (2003)
Unbelievable
28 November 2004
Warning: Spoilers
It was a strong cast and tension built up nicely for a good deal of the film. I found the two main characters quite intriguing, as well as convincing. It had a creepy feel to it. The opening music suggested a cheap b film, but the acting lifted it a bit above that and it had some psychological interest. I'd have preferred if it had continued as a psychological drama; it had the potential to be better than it was.

I decided not to include spoilers, but the story line really was poor towards the end. Did the writer think that we're so used to twists that we need an exponential number of them in order to keep surprising us? I enjoyed it until the last 20 minutes or so, at which point the story became plain silly. A real pity, as it was a reasonably good film in the beginning.

Disappointing

Yes, the acting was excellent, as you'd expect from such top stars and the cinematography was good too, even if they did overdo the low-flying helicopter scenes just a little bit. Seen it too many times to get excited about, thank you.

The first jolt was to hear the words "These are American people you want to kill". I was horrified and would be very interested to know if American viewers were likewise shocked or if they even noticed this dreadfully racist comment.

The main fault is that it was just so full of cliches. Good guy/bad guy is really too predictable now. The script just full of really obvious lines. It's time script writers started showing a bit of imagination instead of relying on the fact that these great actors have the greatest skill of all - to deliver a crap line while keeping a straight face.

Telling Secrets (1993 TV Movie)
Fair

It was watchable, but Cybil Shepherd showed here that she really can't act. Every line she spoke sounded wooden and unconvincing, without an ounce of real feeling in it. It took me a while to realise all the guys were falling in love with her, because it seemed so unbelievable as she didn't have a personality.

The other actors were far better and saved it and the plot was quite enjoyable, just a bit too long. Kicked myself afterwards for wasting over two and a half hours on something that neither inspired nor informed.

I very much doubt it was a true story. It's a common ploy for fictional films to have a bit of text at the end saying what happened to the characters. On this occasion, I forgot to check if it was followed by the disclaimer about "not resembling anyone in real life".

How bad can a film be?
22 May 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Hard to believe this was made in the 90's and not the 70's, as it's so corny. A spy with a fake English accent, a blind girl who keeps moving her eyes to look at whoever is speaking to her and of course, one of the passengers has to be a raving mad psycho, so that we have someone to hate. Considering "Alien" was made in 1979, there is really no excuse for special effects as pathetic as these in the mid-nineties.

To top it all, the script is so bad that this film could have passed for a spoof.

SPOILER BELOW _____________

Logic error The first time the plane landed, the mystery writer decided that they were the ones who'd changed and not the rest of the world, so presumably all the awake passengers were continuing in the real world as normal, so why did he later say that they should be asleep when going back through the rift? And I thought the blind girl was awake at the beginning anyway, as she was sitting there changing the time on her watch when it all happened, or did I blink?
