Stunning throughline from 1982 version
27 March 2023
I recently got the bug to re-watch the Blade Runner movies back to back, what I saw was that their is a complete throughline through both films, the style, the acting, the music, the themes. Absolultely amazing.

The best part of this film is the pacing, you really get to feel what life is like in this new world, from how they eat, to how waste is handled, to interactions with technology.

The story is amazing, and they way that it is uncovered to us at the same rate as K's revelations, amazing.

This film uses light masterfully.

The final fight sequence we're shown is one of the most brutal realistic fight scenes I've ever seen.

It seems like the world is set up for a natural trilogy but if it never gets it, that will be fine.

Parent Review
3 February 2023
This review is for parents who read about the teen romance, and want to know details, but who don't want to kill 105 minutes figuring it out.

The teen's love/crush interest is the B-story of the movie. The teen's interest in the other teen is clearly shown in ACT I, is talked about with every adult in ACT II, and is again shown clearly in ACT III. It was so prevalent, we ended up skipping ahead.

That being said, the rest of this movie was an Onward knockoff, a boy trying to understand his role in this world in light of a missing grandfather/father.

The thing is, Onward has a coherent tight story, and this was a mess. My six year old said after, "yeah that's not my favorite" (which was hilarious) but we asked why, and he said he didn't understand what was going on. The kid understood Inside Out when he was 5, but couldn't understand this.

One thing I will give positive review on - the art style was amazing, the comic strip animation in the front, the bright colors, etc, all 10/10 so I can understand why this was a $200M+ property.

Not hard to see why this flopped so hard, it's not memorable, it's not really a kid's movie, and it's difficult for me to want to pass this on via word-of-mouth, even though it's free with Disney+

Wastes all the goodwill established by Ragnarok
14 July 2022
I gave Ragnarok a 10 and it's one of the only MCU movies I seek out for repeat viewings. It's stylish, hilarious, balanced, and treats the source material with dignity.

I saw the trailer for Love and Thunder and immediately wanted to see it opening night, which I rarely do anymore, but thought this warranted a big-screen viewing.

Without spoilers, my opinion of what we got is too much silliness and irreverence and poor writing, pacing and plot in the first half of the movie that dampens the very exciting and fun second half.

A very important plot point happens in the cold open in a very fast vision, and multiple plot developments happen off camera, yet we get a multiple moments of on-screen gags like Natalie Portman coming up with catch phrases, Stormbreaker being jealous of Mjolnir, the Zeus lightning bolt show from the trailer, and easily ten minutes of goofy flashbacks narrated by Korg that get old really fast. There are times that it apparent that director Waititi just likes the sound of his own voice (as Korg)

As for the acting: Christian Bale's Gorr is the only character that works; Natalie Portman looks out of place and amateur trying to be Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson barely gets a line in despite being King of New Asgard, Russell Crowe's Zeus sounds like Borat and made his scenes unwatchable, and Chris Hemsworth goes full himbo Thor.

Where Ragnarok felt like a love-note to comics, Love and Thunder felt like everyone involved believes Marvel Comics and the MCU are undignified and something to be mocked.

As for content, if you are taking kids be aware that there is a lot of sexually charged dialogue, a scene about orgies and when Chris Hemsworth is disrobed a lot of jokes about the size of his genitalia.

Flanagan Gets It
5 November 2021
I am Christian, I am an addict, I have experienced a miscarriage. Mike Flanagan tackles it all and it made my heart well up.

If you watch the first three episodes of this series and don't continue, you would still get some of the best three hours of long two shots discussing everything from addiction, to Christianity, to Atheism and everything in between.

The way that Flanagan treats faith and Christianity in his dialogue makes it feel completely genuine and expresses the good and misunderstood (by believers and non-believers) sides of our faith.

The scenes where he tackles shame and redemption, forgiveness and addiction filled my heart. As an addict the writing was spot on what we hear in our meeting rooms.

The discussion that Erin and Riley have about what happens when you die - as she is dealing with the loss of her baby brought me to tears. Riley's atheistic point of view is absolutely beautiful as is Erin's idea of heaven where her daughter is surrounded by love... gets me just now writing it down.

The music: there are some Gorgeous a cappella hymns that are hauntingly beautiful.

As the series opens into its final arc we are treated to excellent creature work, excellent horror, and excellent redemption and release of shame.

I loved Hill House and this was almost on par. The only thing that prevents the 10 for me is the hard transition and acceptance of some of the supporting characters when the plot turns to its final arc. It felt like something was left out, but other than that this was perfect.

Jennifer Garner is a beast, but movie felt hollow
1 June 2021
This movie had some very good action sequences but strangled a plot into submission to the point where it made no sense.

It felt as if they put this in front of a test audience and then suits made them change the correct ending to one that left room for a sequel.

There was huge potential to focus on Riley's emotional healing that could have been done through a wise-mentor figure in flashbacks or the Skid Row camp, but they leave that out completely. There was opportunity for her to blame herself for all of what happened because of what she says to the snooty mom in the first scene, but they never go back to this. We're also robbed of her finally being able to rest after finishing the job by the final two scenes of the movie.

Bloated concept that could have been done in a 2 hour movie
19 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When deciding to watch Bly, one would not be at fault for assuming that the tone of the show would be close to Hill House- a terrifying sob-fest that had a grandiose theme which was never told outright but that the viewer understood innately: grief. Watching Bly you're told every episode what the theme is: it's ok to let go of lost love. Yet, at the end of the film, you're left with an unsatisfactory ending.

Now to the review:
  • the first couple of episodes are extremely overacted, the children are very annoying and the script is very forced
  • the scares are few and far between
  • the children's trauma over the loss of their parents is not very central to the story except for one episode with a really terrible plot device that I'll write about below with a **SPOILER** tag
  • the best two episodes center around Henry and Hannah and really nail the vibe from Hill House, but again not scary
  • the curse of the house explored in the second to last episode made me hate the show even more

**SPOILER BELOW**

  • What really made me hate the show the most were the facts that the Lady in the Lake only killed people who stood in her way on her monorail path each night, the fact that Peter says he's been talking to the ghosts in the house when none of them have mouths, and lastly that the entire plot rests on "It's You, its's me, it's us" Skeleton-Key body swap.

Frozen II (2019)

Beautiful art but unoriginal story
3 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The animation in Frozen 2 is top notch, vivid colors and light work, interesting character models, etc

However the movie telegraphs early on and where Frozen 1 surprised, the sequel fell flat.

the music: there are no "let it go" ear worms despite them trying to make "into the unknown" happen. It's not bad, but it's not classic.

The plot: It's curious to me what the conversation in the writers room was when developing the plot. Either they genuinely didn't know they were remaking Fifth Element, or they didn't care because they say "spirit" instead of element.

Conclusion: my kids were entertained; there are some genuinely funny parts, but there are a couple of "remember last time" jokes that seemed like they wouldn't have happened if the sequel wasn't 6-years later. Overall the story just seemed unoriginal compared to the first movie and there were no surprises.

Bonus: there is a "reindeers are better than people" redux called "Alone in the Woods" that turns into a full blown 80s rock video duet with Sven and Kristoff that had me rolling.

Shouldn't have been a Batman Movie
21 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie did not have to be associated with Batman, yet they forced in the Wayne family even as far as to have a clown mask-wearing henchmen be the catalyst for Batman's origin. It felt like the writer had no idea where to take the film after Arthur shoots Murray.

This could have been a great story about a depressed person whom the system fails that cracks and commits a series of atrocities. But the fact that I was supposed to believe this guy is Batman's arch-nemesis the whole movie left me wanting. At no point did I believe this guy could inspire others to violence - his supposed attack on the elite on the subway was a guy shooting in self-defense after getting his ass kicked. There's no way I would believe that would be the tipping point to spark the riots in the last half of the movie.

And the Zazie Beetz "reveal" that she and Arthur weren't really a thing- if you believed that the romance was not a hallucination of a sick man when we are CLEARLY watching the movie from his perspective, then shame on you... but the fact that Todd Phillips felt the need to show the romance was a fabrication was an insult to the audience.

I was extremely bored in the film, didn't think it deserved the buzz it received, and it left me just feeling sad.

Season 2 was perfect
20 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished season 2 and I'm left satisfied, entertained, and filled with pathos.

Why Bergthal doesn't come up in Emmy talks is beyond me. That dude is Frank Castle and his range is insane; flirtatious, raw, playful, intense, introspective, and a maniac. I was fully rooting for his happiness the entire series.

I think the psychological themes from this show are the highlight; Russo, Frank, Pilgrim, Medani, and even Krista are all different sides of the same coin- how do you react to trauma, and what is your true self? Having Billy as an amnesiac stuck believing that Curtis and Frank we're still his buddies, and then having him blow up when he realized Frank cut him up was amazing. I thought Pilgrim's motivations being his kids and the fact that he was fleeing his old self and then mutually walking away from Frank was the perfect mirror to Franks life.

The story in S2 was great, I thought the main and sub stories really worked well together and had good pacing. The only weird part for me was when Billy opted to mentally break Frank instead of kill him when it was easily provable that Frank didn't kill the girls. It was also weird because Russo did already break Frank by murdering his family in S1. Also S2 relies heavily on S2 for context so if you took a break you definitely need a recap.

Emotional Ending to Epic Saga
6 May 2019
After ten years, we're finally through with the Infinity War Saga/Marvel's Great Experiment.

To say I was emotional is an understatement, I laughed, I cried, and I cheered.

There were major issues I had with the plot and major questions I had about the future, but that doesn't spoil the fact that I loved this movie.

Perfect Mix of Camp, Action, Plot & Style
24 January 2019
This movie wasn't on my radar, I was thoroughly disappointed by Justice League and had zero desire to see this. Yet as the reviews came in, and as Jason Momoa killed it on the PR trail, I finally decided to give it a go and really enjoyed it.

Some standouts: Jason Momoa is a star. He carried this script with all of it's tongue-in-cheek groan-worthy lines... I read somewhere that he uses Metal songs to get into character and that Tool was one of his inspirations. Personally I think Tool is a Very Serious Band and so is their front-man Maynard, but he has a pretty weird sense of humor.

For some reason I kept paying attention to the physics - there are a lot of people flying through walls and getting hit really hard, you really feel the kinetic force of the action.

The plot is predictable but epic, the final battle is outstanding, and the world design is colorful, interesting, and fun.

DCEU really steps up the game with this entry into its universe, but I don't really see Wonder Woman, Super Man, or Batman as having the ability to carry a movie with this level of humor and color. They're going to need to introduce a new team in an alternate setting that can be comical, colorful, and have a ton of action - I think the Lantern Corps are going to be the best way even though it was attempted previously.

A Star is Born Review
12 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I will preface this with stating that I have not seen any of the other iterations, but read wiki enough to understand - Man falls for rising star as his fades due to alcoholism, conflict ensues, he dies either by walking in the ocean or driving drunk, and the despondent rising star finds a last token of his love that gives her the strength to carry on.

Now, given that synopsis, there are two things I would expect to see in the film; either his jealousy ruins their marriage and sends him into further decline, or their love lasts through it all but he can't kick the addiction and takes his life when he realizes how much he's hurt his wife.

I think that where this version went wrong is that this version tried to do both, and ended up not doing either well; the love story was sloppy, and conflict was hinted at but never essential, and the story ended up being about the man and his addiction rather than the love story.

Love story was sloppy: There was a scene where the two ride out to Arizona on a bike, no words, a flash to them kissing at a gas pump, Jack's feet in sand, and then he punches his brother in the face. What could've been a scene where the couple talk about his anger, her fear that he would overreact, etc, we just see her standing in the background as Jack and his brother yell at each other. I call the budding romance via music montage the "twilight effect" because you never actually hear these people share there souls with one another. I also felt like we only saw things from Jack's perspective; a cut-over to a new scene, and Ally was at the next phase of her career. It had no meat, they were just head over heels and we were supposed to believe it.

Conflict: When Ally goes on SNL and does her "ass in them jeans" song, Jack's anger is shown when he calls her ugly later on, but we never see the compromise from Ally's perspective- again it's hinted at with the dance class and her saying "it was supposed to be one song". I would have wanted to see her making the decision to "not say anything" and the early conflict with Jack about the new direction... instead we get reaction, repair, and then it's forgotten. There were also other ways they could have shown his light fading - paparazzi not wanting a candid of him, and only wanting Ally, him acting out and punching them - a quick 5 min of film and we could've seen his frustration.

A story about an addict: At the end of the day, Lady Gaga is just a set piece in this story about an addict who can't stop despite having people who care for him and his physical reason for taking the pills being gone - that was the emotional anchor of the story - no matter how many times you scream at Jack to not take a drink or pop a pill. What we got was a rich backstory of a boy who had already tried suicide but whose alcoholic father didn't even notice, a boy who became a rock star whose brother gave up his dreams to keep him alive.

Sadly Cooper didn't seem to agree that's what the story was about, and instead we got a movie that tried all the things and ended up not doing any of it well.

Almost perfect horror film
7 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I know a movie can't be perfect but i was this close to giving IT a 10.

The imagination of the scares was great. Bill Skarsgaard plays an incredibly menacing Pennywise. The scenes with the kids bonding told the story succinctly without a lot of film.

I loved the pacing, that the writers kept much of King's source material.

At no point did it feel cheesy, I was fully expecting it to be but was pleasantly surprised.

The effects were incredible, little Georgie mutating at the end of the movie into Pennywise was effing fantastic.

I'm sure on a second watch I'll change my mind, but at first glance this film is outstanding and a top contender for scariest movies this decade.

As bad as I thought
6 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start with the CGI- on my UHD 4K 1080p Set the CGI looked like a cartoon. Steppenwolf looked like a video game villain. Cyborg was the worst thing I've seen since Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern.

The direction- the opening credits with life shots of normal people was a waste considering people are not really a concern in the movie. The Snyder slow mo effect was expected and tired.

The script- I almost had to mute it. It was like a high school play. They each had terrible lines, but AM took the cake, with WW second... the whole "she closed off herself" speech between her and BM was just unwatchable.

The plot- I had no idea what the hell was going on, a box, mother? Unity? Darkseid? What was the big plan? Also BM in the comics wouldn't show up as Bruce Wayne to get a team together, he would do something awesome to wow the recruit. And the end credits with Luther making his own team??? How is that a bigger threat than an alien trying to wipe out the planet?

I had really low expectations coming into this, but this movie surpassed them all. There was so much potential with the DCU but time and time again they screwed the pooch by trying to catch up to marvel's 10 years in less than 3.

Too dim and nihilistic
30 July 2018
I just couldn't with the movie, maybe I should rewatch it when I am more alert, but the driving around in silence just killed me. I get the point of the movie, but the presentation just became a little too arthouse for me. I will say it's aptly named though as it did get under my skin, just not in a way I was expecting.

Appropriately named
6 July 2018
Ant-Man and the Wasp is the correct name, because this is more of a team up movie than the previous entry. I'll start by saying that Evangeline Lilly's Wasp is a badass. Her fight scenes used the shrinking ability to maximum effect. The story is simple, yet compelling. It had a lot of heart, and a great ending. There are essentially 3-villains, 2 you can empathize with, the third a run of the mill bad guy, but due to the handling of the non run of the mills bad guys, I thought Marvel nailed it. The tone was hilarious from beginning to end, there is a middle section where it gets really serious, but then is saved by Paul Rudd, who knows how to handle these types of movies due to his success w/ I Love You Man and This is 40. The sight-gags had us rolling, there is a scene where Ant-Man's suit is malfunctioning and we couldn't stop laughing. On a side note, it feels LOTR-esque the way they handle the size and proportions. Lastly, Michael Pena tops himself as the scene stealer with his frantic delivery. He's hilarious. Lastly Lastly, I really enjoyed Randall Park's back and forth with Paul Rudd, it made for some of the best lines in the movie. Overall this is a perfect movie for post Inifinty War, in tone and scale. You also get some explanation for their absence during the fights w/ the Black Order, but it's not 100% convincing.

A Quiet Place (2018)

Extremely well done, but not a 10
16 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
You're definitely going to feel the burn. You definitely will not make a sound in the theater. You will appreciate our freedom to be loud AF. The movie does a great job with all, and the acting/directing by John K was top-of-the-line. However, as with any other-worldly movies, you start to wonder the rules of the world, and you see some details that the director caught, but catch the details that seemed obvious and got left out. For example: The creatures can hear small sounds from far away, so the family has to whisper and walk on beach sand everywhere.... but Near a waterfall they can speak... and The creatures can't hear them because something nearby is louder... With that logic... why can they hear a whisper from hundreds of yards away when there are thousands of bits of noise between them and the noisemaker, yet they can't hear a heartbeat from a terrified human? Inevitably in these kinds of movies we always get the "we never tried that" mechanic to kill the creatures, which sure enough they do. I know it's hard to wrap up these kinds of movies, but why does it have to? I would have loved if Emily Blunt and the kids united together against all odds to continue living even though John K dies... that kind of ending would have made me give a 9.5.

TL;DR - great acting, great concept, funky rules, predicatable ending

Modern Family: Lake Life (2017)
Season 9, Episode 1
6/10
After 8 Seasons...
28 September 2017
... this show is starting to become too predictable. My wife and I called almost everything that happened; Mitch's first kiss actually being gay, Ben being left on the island, Gloria falling out of the boat, and Phil moving at the last second when Claire was going to push him off the cliff and falling.

Season 8 had a lot of heart, but season 7 turned silly and went from the family acting somewhat believable to being slapstick. I feel like season 9 kicked off trying to do both, but the heart was meh, and the slapstick was predictable.

I also had issues with how Mitch reacted to finding out the guy he kissed his 13-yr old summer was gay at the time. We got a little insight into his character when he says he didn't try and kiss a boy for 5-yrs after that, and how it led him to be attracted to more flamboyant men, but the writers went for the easy gag of Mitch freaking out that the guy didn't think he was attractive. It was a missed opportunity for Mitch to stick up for himself and say "I'll have you know what you said made me think you were straight and prevented me from being open with my feelings for fear of being embarrassed again for 5-yrs" or something like that.

I also think Hayley (and more so Sarah) lost about 5 years of age with how she was costumed, and with her longer hair. She looked like a young adult last season w/ her short hair, but like a high school kid last night. I think they need to move her out of the house and introduce new characters and a new setting. It was too good to be true to have her be w/ Andy, so maybe bring it back.

I love the show, but it needs to do a better job growing up w/ the cast post school-aged children, and not rely so much on ridiculous plot set-ups.

Iron Fist (2017–2018)
5/10
Good Superhero Show, Below Average Marvel Show
23 May 2017
Look, I heard all of the bad reviews, but I refused to read them until I saw the show. After I did finish, I read some reviews and saw that my opinions were on point.

First, for a Kung Fu TV show, the choreography was amateur, you could see the air between the fighter's fists and their targets, you could tell through the editing that the fights were not single-take (or single actor), and even worse, the blows lacked any velocity or force, making it laughable when they landed- it looked like WWE wrestling.

Second, the story was not good- it's not because he was a billionaire and Trump ruined billionaire's per the series lead actor, it was bad because it was bad. At no point did I feel like Danny's vengeance was important and I felt that the Hand was overplayed. I think that the vengeance could have been resolved by episode 6 and the rest of the season could have been the battle for K'un'Lun or something. The trope of the hero learning to be a hero had been done by DD, and JJ, Iron Fist should have been a hero from the get-go with a vast understanding of his abilities.

Lastly, the acting was TERRIBLE and the script was worse. The lead actor was awful, where did they find someone so bad? I would have said he was the worst, but the guy who played Bakudo was absolutely cringe worthy.

Marvel blew me away with DD and Jessica Jones, but both of those shows had issues, yet they were forgiven because the execution was so good. I haven't gotten past Luke Cage ep. 1 yet, but I can already tell that the acting and script are at least doing what the writers wanted. IF would have been acceptable as the first entry in the Netflix Marvel universe, but 5 seasons in, they should be killing it, instead it was a big whiff- just like the punches and kicks in the fight choreography.

It Follows (2014)

Misled by "scary" reviews & Thoughts on establishing rules
24 April 2017
I was thrown off by the time period in which the movie supposedly takes place. It was intentional per the director, but it was distracting. I think the movie needs to tell the viewer when the setting is somehow to let them know the "rules"- for example a kid can't have a cell phone in a 90s movie, but it's expected for a movie in present day.

There isn't a lot of dialogue, a vast majority of the "sound" is a very 80s dreamlike synthesizer which adds to the dreamy direction of the movie. It's very prettily filmed, but there are a lot of slowly- turning shots which seem pointless. There are also a few times that the director started a sense of dread with a scene, then messes it up with his choices. Here's what I mean: there is a scene where Jay (the protagonist) is walking through a dark house, the camera follows behind her, closely, so you know something is coming, but you don't know where. Right before the reveal happens, the director switches the shot to film from the monster's perspective in the next room, so when Jay walks into the room and is surprised, we aren't. The movie's "rules" for the monster are pretty rigid- it walks slowly in a straight line to its intended target, so by definition, you know that Jay isn't going to be surprised from behind, because it doesn't appear out of thin air. My point is, what could've been a good climax to a build up, ends up being secondhand.

The final confrontation with the monster seems to bend the rules already established in the movie, so it falls flat. There are also two scenes in which two characters appear as if they are going to pass it on to random hosts, but nothing is shown (all other sexual encounters are) so it ends up again leading the viewer to question the established rules.

Overall, I was extremely disappointed because I had read multiple accounts of this being the scariest movie in a decade, and I loved the concept, but the movie just isn't scary, and there are too many questions to make it a good piece of film. I'm not going to destroy it in the ratings because there is much worse (and the acting was actually good) but I feel like I'm below the average here, so I gave it a 6.

Unattached
5 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this movie, but Angelina Jolie's storytelling caused me to lose the connection to the main character, Zam, once he and his friend Phil are separated.

From hearing about the book, I know that Zam goes through years of substance abuse and revenge plotting against the Japanese people for what the torturers did to him, but I never felt that in the movie.

I also never really understood why Zam was singled out by The Bird, and I never felt like he or any of the characters were in mortal danger.

I honestly only felt impressed by what he went through during the ocean scenes and the first imprisonment. The narration of the movie kinda felt like this: "I competed in the Olympics, my brother taught me to never give up, I survived 45 days at sea (long anecdote about the perils of the sea and losing my friend), I came home after being in a Japanese POW camp for two years."

I'm sure that the cliché "the book is better" applies here, and I know that Louis Zamperini has his own book that is considered better than this movie's namesake.

I wanted an emotional, unbelievable story where I cared about the characters... I got that for half a movie and proceeded to become unattached as the movie dragged on.

Score: 5/10

Another Day in Paradise
24 February 2014
I thought this movie was fresh until people reminded me of Moon. Oh well they're both good.

Overall the movie was well played out and the narration does well to make sure we don't know too much before the big reveal.

Some twists can be guessed, but the movie was well acted, and it's actually a great acting effort by Cruise... not as good as Reacher (which I feel came out at the same time) but decent.

The design kind of looks ripped from Mass Effect or the Star Wars Prequels, but overall it was nicely done.

Great shots of the desolate landscape in the spirit of Fallout 3.

I feel that Freeman was underused and the team he leads were mindlessly erased from plot progression; they're so careful for years and end up as nameless body counts.

Except for a few devices that felt like they were there to drive the plot the movie was OK.

Warning: Spoilers
They probably could've gotten away with calling this something else. Only a couple of devices from the original made it to this version; the fantasy sim company called Rekall (sic) and a few character names. Oh, and a black guy named Benny.

The original was so much more mysterious; ancient alien technology, aliens, and mutants. This version had none of the above.

It had some easter eggs for fans of the original, but A) there was no need for the triple breasted woman, we are not told that there are mutants, and there is no story behind any body being mutated, so it was stupid and didn't have the comic impact of the original. The other easter egg was B) the disguise Arnold wears in the original- the red- headed woman... you'll see her in the new version. But it's just a shout out to the original, and it's basically where similarities stopped.

I enjoyed that it wasn't a carbon copy and thought the espionage part was done well and the action sequences were OK.

I was able to shrug off the "Fall" and its defiance of physics until it became a major plot point:

SPOILERS

For one, I don't need science (as others have already used) to know that GB is not directly on the other side of the world from Australia, which is fine, but the Fall goes strait through the core in the movie. I also don't need science to know that the pressure would be crushing for anything to move through the core, and that it would also be too hot for anything to be near without melting (ie the shaft that the fall elevator goes through and the actual elevator). Also, I'm pretty sure building a super structure that spans the entire globe would collapse under pressure or change the magnetic characteristics of the planet.

I also don't need science to know that it is highly improbable for a person to set a 30-minute bomb before reaching the core, and it not go off until 4 minutes after reaching the surface... there are vehicles that fast, but our elevator in this movie was going slow enough for people to WALK ON ITS SURFACE WHILE IN MOTION. That's when this guy dropped from a 7 to a 4 for me, there has to be some realism in sci-fi or the movie loses its suspension of reality and becomes nonsense.

The Fall elevator also led to the worst part of the plot: "Let's put our entire militia and leader/president on one vehicle with one entry point and try to invade a city". It was ridiculous.

SPOILERS OVER

Overall it was visually impressive, but the plot jumped the shark and I couldn't forgive it.

Funny Every Viewing
14 January 2014
My wife bought me the Blu-Ray for Christmas, and I swear I laughed at every line still.

There are just so many quotable lines that found their way into my lexicon as a college student, and years after. It's funny now to watch it and realize, holy crap, that's where that came from.

The plot is absurd to say the least, having gone through a wedding myself, I know that at least the bride or groom should know everyone there, or at least recognize them... idk maybe there were just so many wedding guests that they didn't know them all, but it's still asking a lot from the viewer, specifically latching onto a member of the Cleary's grooms family.

But plot absurdity is what makes the movie so hilarious. I'm not sure how fresh the concept was when the movie was released originally, but Vaughn and Wilson strike gold and the script is phenomenal.

I won't show this to my kids immediately upon their 13th birthday, but there will be a time when I can bust this out and show them how funny movies were back in my day.

Kinda Melancholy But OK
2 January 2014
I didn't love the movie per se, but I appreciated what it was going for. It is very melodramatic, and it took some time to understand the Australian scenes, but the movie was gut-wrenching in some parts and Colin Farell does some of the best acting of his career.

Emma Thompson plays a great lead in the film and really carried the movie... if Mary Popping was about Mr. Banks, then Saving Mr. Banks was about P.L. Travers' solemn past.

Tom Hanks is on point as Walt Disney and the supporting cast does a great job of lightening the mood of a pretty dreary movie.

There were a lot of old folks in the theatre, so I don't know that young teen would appreciate the movie as much, my own high-school aged in-laws were visibly restless. Would recommend seeing, but only if you're wide awake.
