The Cable Guy (1996)
A poor unfunny movie ...
23 June 2003
I couldn't believe I sat and watched this movie. Okay, I like Jim Carrey but in almost every movie he does he seems to portray that character from "The Mask". I loved that film, but in "The Cable Guy" it seems he's trying to see how many different ways he can do that character again. Perhaps it's just me.

Anyway, I found this movie to be totally unfunny, except perhaps the fight scene in the restaurant toilets - well it raised a smile at least. As for the rest, it looked as if Matthew Broderick couldn't wait to finish the film just to get away from Carrey's ever expanding ego, never mind getting rid of Chip.

One thing that bugged me in this movie was that if Chip was sacked from the cable company ages before, how did he know when to come and conduct the installation? Okay, so he might have tapped in to the telephones. Hmmm a dodgy plot?

I can't say much more about this film, well nothing nice anyway.

Sorry Jim.

Car Insurance in France must be expensive ...
23 April 2003
I picked up this DVD in Asda's a few weeks ago and seeing it had Robert De Niro starring convinced me enough to buy it. Then seeing in the credits it starred Jean Reno, Sean Bean and Jonothan Pryce too made me realise I was watching a winner here.

I wasn't wrong either, this film is brilliant. The beginning is slow and tense; dark, clear colours in the picture sets the mood perfectly. From then on most of it is pretty much action.

Five mysterious men of various backgrounds (ex-CIA, KGB etc) meet in Paris, France for a job headed by a Northern Irish woman. The job is to steal a case from a group and return the case to their as yet unknown employers. Just as things seem to run smoothly, one of them is a double-crosser.

Now for some of the best bits, the car chases. These are shot magnificently as Peugeot's, BMW's and Audi's tear through the streets of Paris. These chases are the most thrilling chases I have ever seen. And when you get chases, you get crashes. Think on-coming traffic chases and you might get the picture.

This is a must see film. 8 out of 10.

Stir Crazy (1980)
An old personal favourite
26 March 2003
Warning: Spoilers
** Possible Spoilers **

I remember seeing this movie a long time ago, and watching it last week made me remember how funny this movie is. Pryor and Wilder are a great double-act in this movie, where they play two travellers in America who get wrongly accused of robbing a bank and get sent down for 125 years!!! Yes, just look at Wilder's reaction when he hears this in court.

The film from then on shows their experiences in prison, while a duo on the outside try to convince the law of Wilder's and Pryor's character's innocence. There are some really funny scenes in this section, especially the scene where the two have to share a cell with an extremely large and dangerous man.

Yes, I consider this a classic comedy and far more better than Pryor/Wilder recent efforts.

Chilling rather than scary ...
27 February 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Possible Spoilers

I saw this last night, having not seen a decent horror flick for a while. I heard that the Japanese version is far more scarier and that this version is perhaps "watered down".

I found this film chilling rather than scary. The whole film leaves you feeling cold throughout. The evil that pours out from the little girl Samara is intense, possibly due to the neglect she had recieved from her parents.

It's certainly a powerful and disturbing film, and kept me thinking about it all night, hence the lack of sleep.

A good film, by no means fantastic, but worth seeing ... 7/10
