Has its moments
17 November 2023
I'll start off by saying I've never read the books, and nor should I have to! It's a film after all.

The first 1/3 of the movie starts off really well. We're instantly transported into the world, we learn about and connect with our main character, and the plot is set up, ready to go, potentially greatness awaits.

Unfortunately, when the actual games starts, the writing just goes downhill, where in the cinema I actually shook my head with disappointment several times. The overall quality does actually pick up around 2/3, but out ending then crashing down to an overall 6/10.

The writing, like a lot of tv and cinema these days, just let's it down. Moments that could be poignant become laughable, and I also feel (despite its long run time) certain parts, particularly connecting with anyone but our protagonist, we're very rushed.

Lastly, Rachel Ziegler just isn't a very good actor. Almost all of her lines are delivered in exactly the same way, which is a shame as our lead I actually thought did a really good job. Worth seeing, but not watching again.

One of, it not the best in the franchise
11 July 2023
Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible is back, this entry; Dead Reckoning - part 1.

I've been a fan of these films since I was a young lad, and I'm pleased to say this is a fantastic entry to the series.

Car chases, hand to hand combat, gun battles, death defying stunts and small amounts of well timed humour, all surrounding a storyline which whilst doesn't take its self too seriously, still manages to maintain an incredibly amount of suspense.

Tom Cruise truly is the last big movie star, and by this point, knows exactly what we want from a Hollywood blockbuster. The pacing in particular, was almost non stop suspense with drippings of character and plot building.

It's a near perfect movie - sure it's a little farfetched (but who watches these for the realism) and I did spot a few moments of bad CGI (the train scene particular) but this is the perfect Saturday night movie. Definitely worth seeing in the theatres, so what are you waiting for?!

Better than the Crystal Skull... but confusing.
28 June 2023
I've just left the cinema feeling slightly underwhelmed, and very confused.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny feels in many ways, like an old Indiana movie.

It's wonderful to see Harrison Ford back in his best role, even if he does look far too old to be undertaking even half the things in the film.

There's some solid nostalgia and references to the old films, with a few old characters popping up, and our new characters actually did a pretty good job. Mads Mikklesen, is an ok villain, if not very shallow, but personally the star is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who shines throughout giving us constant jokes with a cheeky smile.

The score was brilliant as to be expected, which accompanies car chases, ancient ruins, action scenes and all the rest. The humour is on point, it's never boring, and everything moves at a very steady pace.

The first 3/4 of the movie are pretty great, and at this point I would have probably given it a 7/7.5 out of 10.

But... the ending of the film is just confusing, and very underwhelming. I won't obviously give anything away, but my wife and I both said we'd really appreciate a 20 minute YouTube video explaining what on earth happened, and how did they get there?

It's worth a trip to the cinema, and great to see Indiana back on our screens one final time, but it will leave you feeling rather empty inside. 6.5 / 10.

A perfect send off for the Guardians
3 May 2023
A near perfect end to an incredible Marvel trilogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is one of the best Marvel movies ever produced, and on par if not succeeding the first installment. (I personally didn't think number 2 was good at all)

The humour is brilliant, the storyline perfectly paced, each character gets their time on screen, the world building was wonderful, the action fantastic, and the CGI far better than some of the more recent Marvel additions. As always, the music was excellent.

This entry focuses heavily on our beloved Rocket, and being the final piece of the Guardians Galaxy trilogy, pulls a lot of character arcs almost full circle.

Our bad guy, an actor I'm unfamilar with, was the perfect villain, and from a quick search on imdb he is finally being recognised and is cast in a number of popular TV shows. This is also a tear jerker of a movie, so don't be surprised if you find yourself weeping throughout several points of the film.

You won't be dissapointed with this final addition to the Guardians, but you may feel a little sad that it has now come to an end.

A pleasant surprise
21 April 2023
This was an incredibly silly and fun movie that you really don't have to think too hard about.

The humour is arguably the best part of the film, and I had many laugh out loud moments. Nicholas Hoult delivers as our lead, Awkwafina plays exactly what you'd expect which suits the role well, but Nicholas Cage as Dracula is just fantastic. He hit the tone perfectly with this one, scary, funny, manipulative, honestly the perfect casting for this horror comedy.

It's not a perfect film, the action; whilst enjoyable, is at times incredibly difficult to follow exactly what us happening - which is a problem with a lot of movies now days. They're also some silly plot holes, as well as just not enough as Nick Cage as you'd like, but overall it really doesn't matter.

If you're looking for a horror comedy with some very gory and silly moments, you've come to the right place. Fans of Cage are going to love this one.

A disappointing ending for Uhtred son of Uhtred
15 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have been a fan of the last Kingdom since the day it came out. I own all the books, having read them multiple times, and watched the first few series often.

Season 1 was fantastic, genuinely an incredible show. Seasons 2 and 3 were good, and seasons 4 and 5 were ok.

With the film, which actually contains the events of the final three books, it sadly has continued down a disappointing trend.

It's biggest fault is that is just rushed, seriously rushed. Each scene is pivotal to the story, with different key events taking place in a matter of minutes. Because of this, we don't connect with any new characters; in fact we barely get to know them. Before we know it we've reached the climax of the story.

There were aspects I did like, the battle scene was done well, Finan as usual stands out giving us some good moments of humour, but there is little to like unfortunately.

They should have, in my opinion, done one final season. Connected with the characters more, strung out the important events, really build to a satisfying climax.

Worth the watch if you're a fan of the show, but it will leave you feeling a little empty inside. Read the books - you won't regret it.

Fun & entertaining
31 March 2023
Never played dungeons and dragons (though I've always really wanted to!) but without knowing anything about the source material, this was pretty good!

Very entertaining overall, great pacing, some laugh out loud moments, a few great characters. That's not to say it's perfect though, some of the laughs fall short, and my biggest criticism would be the lack of world building and character development.

Saying that though, it's a great Friday night movie. You really don't have to think too hard about this one, just sit back, be entertained, and enjoy the laughs and magic. Fun, but not fantastic.

The greatest action movie you'll ever see.
24 March 2023
John Wick chapter 4 is without a doubt, the greatest ever action movie of our lifetime. The film, which runs at two a half hours, is relentless. 90% of this film is action, it barely gives you any time to breathe before moving on to the next fight.

And the action sequences themselves, are with out a doubt the best I've ever seen. Spanning multiple locations, we have insane gun fights, swordplay, hand to hand, car chases; even archery and as we've come to expect from Chapter 3, some dog killing sequences.

The story is actually pretty solid, with the only negative of the movie being the cheesey one liners from every character; but actually, I don't even mind - we know this is supposed to be fun and not take itself too seriously, and whilst Keanu himself in my opinion delivers his lines with incredible averageness, it almost adds to the movie. The sets themselves are also gorgeous, taking us from Japan to France, and not once are you disappointed with the scenery.

If you're a fan of action sequences, strap yourself in for the most incredible experience you'll ever have.

Good! Not great...
3 February 2023
I find IMDb so strange now days. It's often either 10/10 or 2/10 reviews, very little in between - hence why I felt I had to leave a review!

I know nothing about the source material, but overall this a fun, magical, animated journey that definitely doesn't take itself too seriously.

The plot is ok, the animation is good with some really satisfying gore filled moments (although occasionally let's itself down particularly some of the dragon scenes) the script constantly filled with very crude jokes, which I like! All of the characters are actually pretty great, potentially even the strongest aspect of the show.

Ultimately, it's Definitely worth a watch, but it's not going to blow you away.

Religion is nonsense - the movie
18 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An incredibly slow burning film, about an English nurse tasked with monitoring an Irish girl; believed to be a saint, as she has not eaten for four months.

The village, and her family, believes her to be a miracle, and thus do not feed the child, as to them she is touched by God. Our nurse, played by Pugh, is solid in her role, and plays the battle of not only encouraging the girl to eat, but to explain to the family, and village, that she is dying.

That is pretty much it. Very little happens, aside what I've described, until a relatively satisfying ending.

To me, this is a film reminding us to focus on the present, not the concept of heaven. Ultimately, how faith, religion, is nonsense.

Honestly, I don't recommend. I wonder what the purpose of this film is? Who is made for? Who reads the synopsis thinking, yes, I want a bleak film about a girl who won't eat and her manically Christian family.

Worth a watch, but nothing special
2 October 2022
This was a pretty good movie. The acting is solid and the dialogue is witty and fun, the pacing is great and the sets are wonderful to look at.

I would say, I was a little underwhelmed by the ending, and Sam Rockwell (who I usually love) didn't have his time to shine. I think this was merely the character he was playing and the writing rather than his ability.

Saoirse Ronan as expected was brilliant, she really shone on screen and gave the audience the funniest moments throughout.

Overall, a relatively entertaining old school ish murder mystery with a 21st twist, but a good movie, not a great one.

Not bad, not great
19 August 2022
Love the concept, Jamie Foxx fighting vampires with funny man Dave Franco? What's not to like?

While it had some funny moments and good action scenes, overall it was relatively weak. The plot was rushed and there was a quite a lot of fumbled lines and bad acting. Snoop Dogg is also in this...

It entertained me for an evening, but I certainly can't see myself watching it again.

12 August 2022
What a giant shame this was. What I will say is, I was definitely entertained by this movie, slowly seeing more of and more of the entity, getting to know the characters etc.

But... One of the most disappointing endings I have ever witnessed. We get zero answers. Absolute none. What is the entity? Why is it here? What is it doing?

Unlike Get Out and Us, which have very satisfying endings that come full circle. With Nope almost of all of our questions go completely unanswered.

I feel like Jordan really missed the mark with this one.

Solid Entertainment
9 August 2022
I throughly enjoyed this flick. No time wasting, no nonsense, just a straight up entertaining movie with fantastic action, costumes and a simple story. This would have been a brilliant one to see in the cinema. I also love the fact it's Native Americans and not set in the present or future like all the other Predator movies. 10/10 for originality. The perfect Saturday night movie.

Average at best
19 July 2022
The trailer for this made it look awesome as it showed off all the cool action scenes, and don't get me wrong, there were a few fighting moments that were done well. But that really was it... Plot - boring. Acting - bad. CGI - terrible.

It's fine to kill a few hours with but other than that I really do not recommend you waste your time.

One big fat sigh
3 June 2022
3 episodes in; Darth Vader finally arrives on the scene, and it still isn't getting better.

Your target audience for this is people who have grown up with the prequels, yet this seems made almost for children.

The writing is the worst aspect of this whole show, with the acting following a close second. Some of the scenes are also laughable and just poorly made; you can't believe this is a big budget show.

Credit to the girl playing Leia and Sun Kang for giving solid performances; pity it's not enough to make up for the all the awfulness.

Entertaining and Original
21 May 2022
Wow. Where to begin? Without giving spoilers; this was the most entertaining, well made, intriguing and heart warming film I have seen in years.

The action was fantastic and hilarious, the concept original and gripping. Michelle Yeoh and all the supporting cast were flawless. Best film of 2022 and it's only May.

Great concept - average execution
7 May 2022
I love the idea of this film. Dr Strange battling mythical beings and different versions of Marvel characters across multiple universes? I'm in! But sadly this to me almost felt slightly B grade.

The CGI personally I was not impressed with. Many moments I felt I was watching CGI that felt like it was made in the early 2010's.

The dialogue, which definitely attributed to the poor acting, was often painful at times. Very cringey lines delivered poorly by a multitude of characters. I almost can't blame the actors for trying, but the children in this movie, including the lead, were absolutely terrible, and I'm really not exaggerating here.

There were fun moments don't get me wrong, some good horror aspects, the enjoyment seeing the different characters in the multiple universes; but this wasn't enough to make up for the overall finish of the film.

Overall, some enjoyable moments and fun scenes; but some cheesy dialogue, poor CGI and some really bad performances.

Couple laughs at best
20 April 2022
What a disappointment this was. The plot itself is fine, romance writer abducted by evil mogul to help find some lost artefact.

Whilst a few people were laughing in the cinema, most were dead quiet. This felt like it was made 10 years ago, or was your average Netflix movie.

It had its moments, a couple laughs from Channing, Brad Pitt also delivered for the short amount of time he was involved, but Sandra Bullock was just awful. You could tell this was merely a pay check and she really did not care about this movie.

Overall, badly written jokes, full of plot holes, and a disappointing supporting cast and performance from Bullock. Definitely save this one for when it arrives on Netflix in 6 months.

The Northman (2022)

A film making tour de force
15 April 2022
The Northman is a gritty, visceral, other worldly, unrelenting masterpiece.

The camera work is incredible, the acting is flawless, the music a perfect strong booming accompaniment and the whole film has an incredibly unique feel to it.

This is in my opinion, the best depiction of Vikings and Norse Gods I have ever seen. Whilst I was hoping for one giant battle spectacle, it really isn't that sort of film, and I am now somewhat glad it didn't follow the stereotypical huge blockbuster battles nor have that Hollywood feel.

This is a loose adaptation of the 13th century tale Amleth, which eventually inspired William Shakespeares Hamlet.

If you think yourself a film buff - you 100% need to see this movie. I can appreciate the general viewer may find this too intense, but more fool them. This is Robert Zeggers best work so far.

Better than the 2nd, but not perfect
8 April 2022
Firstly, I am a huge fan of Harry Potter since beginning to read the books 23 years ago, I've read them at least 10 times, and seen the movies at least 50 times. I say this so you have some confidence in what I'm talking about.

The secrets of Dumbledore is a significant improvement on the 2nd movie, as which most would agree with, it was all over the place.

The storyline was far improved, the pacing was solid, and the new characters introduced were a significant improvement compared to poor old Leta Lestrange.

The scenes of magic and creatures were absolutely brilliant, as they have been in the previous films. This is in my opinion the strongest point of all the movies, you truly are transported to the wizarding world.

However, that's not to say this was perfect. Some of the "secrets" revealed I felt were under delivered rather than bomb dropping truths. I mean this in their delivery rather than the actual facts.

A lot of the plot points and characters aims also felt quiffy, several of their actions completely out of place from their personalities.

One thing also, what on earth was up with Jude Laws accent? He kept diverting between English and American. At one stage, I actually wondered if someone had drunk poly juice potion and was impersonating him.

Mads Mikkelsen was also a fantastic Grindelwald. Whilst I enjoyed Johnny Depps portrayal, he was slightly too extreme in my opinion.

Overall though, I felt very entertained, I really enjoyed seeing different parts of the wizarding world, but was a little underwhelmed by the finale. A solid edition - and make sure you see it in the cinema.

One final note - You could have almost skipped the entire second movie. None of it held any relevance to the Secrets of Dumbledore.

Worth a watch
6 April 2022
Interesting film, I've never seen anything quite like it. A family in 1630's New England is terrorised by supernatural forces is the premise, but there is more to it.

There's some great acting from the Father and Eldest daughter, though, the other 3 children I'd argue not so much. I have no issues with this, they're children, though I found certain scenes slightly laughable rather than intense.

Other than that though, it's a slow burner, grey, bleak, some very intense scenes, a brilliant score and some relatively traumatic moments.

Without giving much away, this is in no way your typical horror movie, but I'd definitely recommend you give it a try.

2 April 2022
Poor storyline, bad acting, huge plot holes, terrible writing. This felt like a B grade Netflix movie.

Tom Hollander and mark walhberg were fine, though I felt their chemistry was off. The supporting characters, and I'm not being dramatic here, were terrible. This could be down to the terrible script but even so. There were also some just incredible far fetched lack of gravity moments.

Really do not waste your time on this one.

Meh
31 March 2022
Sadly painfully average. It has its moments, but it's main issue I would say is the lack of character development. 8 episodes that takes us between England and Norway, trying to give us 3 main characters, but introducing more and more along the way.

I'd also say it looks kind of cheap? It definitely doesn't have the same gritty feel like the first few seasons of Vikings did.

It's worth watching, but definitely don't get your hopes up for this one.

Zombie Fun - make sure to get to episode 3
6 February 2022
Decent show - I will admit reading the other reviews I can kind of understand peoples opinions about the first 2 episodes, they are arguably the weakest, and things really pick up in episode 3 and especially in episode 4. Overall though, it's fun, jumpy, some fun characters and awesome zombie chase scenes. Another solid Korean flick - ignore the haters.
