The Luminaries (2020)
Still confused
Gosh I live in Dunedin and my ancesters were goldminers, but I couldn't follow the plot. Or the timeline. And what did all the stuff about the moon and planets have to do with it..?
I still don't know who stole her purse.!!!
This could have been so much better. I really hope that someone will write a drama based on this exciting part of New Zealand history.
There is much to write..
No surprise the scenery is fantastic...
Funny Cow (2017)
Rise up and laugh
Somber ,but a good study of a woman who managed via her wry view to achieve success in a man comedic world ... Though the darkness we saw a flower bloom .
Her jokes were off but this was an era when cruss was fash ..I must confesses the outrangesness certainly did raise a laugh ... This was a period piece . My comments would not be complete without mention if the excellent soundtrack ..
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)
A mixed bag
The film was beautiful but this seemed to be the film makers prime objective .. It was obvious that the girl with the cute bum which looked so good in those 40s trousers ,would never settle for the boring Yank when the Islander had such sexy eyes ..
I thought the plot difficult to follow .. I would have liked to have learned more about the occupation ..I would have liked too to have better understood the reason for the group .. The way the plot weaved its way around the tragic family story got a bit lost too .
Calling the man who gave the mother away a traitor was rewriting history . At that time a women coverting with the enemy would have been considered the traitor ..Too much time was spent on the authors time in London prior to going to Guernsey .Did she really need a finance ?
The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009)
A rare gem
I came upon this movie by accident .. it was on TV late one night .. I did not see it from the start so did not know who was to be hero and who the villain ... but as the film progressed the heroism of Irena became apparent , and incredible what she would do to help children who were strangers to her.... It was amazing too and heartbreaking at the same time to see what a difficult choice those Jewish parents had to make . Knowing the only way their children could survive was for them to give up everything these parent held dear .. the language , their religion , the whole sense of themselves .. The previous reviewer said he did not think it as good as Schinder's list . this I found offensive , and thought he had not "got' the film as I had .. Terrible things happened during WW2 lots of them .. some we know about, and some we do not, and may never .. but it is not a competition !
This film told a tale which was new to me and I was very pleased to have turned the TV on late that night ..
