Thanks for bringing back Freddy
25 August 2003
I saw this film on opening night in a crowded audience of F13 and NOES fans and the entrie theatre was filled with the raging antcipation. It was probably one of the best expiernces I ever had seeing a movie. I just thought I would get that out of the way for a moment.

(spoliers, but nothing TOO major) I really liked this film and I liked the structure of this film. It starts as F13 movie " We're stupid kids doing stupid things, lets have sex and drink" then is starts to have hints of a nightmare movie when talks of conspiracies are brought up. But then it jumps back to f13 movie where they want to party and there is a big blood bath of victims. The film then takes a full on NOES twist as the characters know they are trapped in the lies of the adults, and must fight for them selves. Then film gradually makes it's way into "freddy vs.jason" which I think is the perfect way to go and was structured very well. As far as the acting Jason Ritter, Kelly Rowland, Katherine Isabelle ( I hate to admit it, OH I hate her) and a few others did really well. Now of course there was some over acting, but you can't blame the actors for that. Apperenly Ronny Yu told them to make there own characters, that he was totally involved in the look and that it was thier job not his. Granted that is true, and something a lot of actors would strive for. But come on, they are kids. 25? You let a 25 yo take control of the entire performance and you Overdramatic acting. It happens, so that cast can't be totally faulted. My Big beef is that (SPOLIER) Freddy kills ONE person. He doesn't even seem to enjoy it that much, when you consider he was longing for a kill. Personally I think he should have killed Kia, thats just me tho.

A side note, This, and CHICAGO, are the only films I have ever scene where the audience applauded during and after the movie. And I don't mean little claps by random people. The ENTIRE audience burst into applause at one point. So if that says something.

I don't know that's just my humble opinion.

Mother's Day (1980)
Odd. . . and interesting
12 July 2003
This movie is quiet interesting, to me anyway. Of course it has it's obvious similarities to other films it's deffinately a combination of " Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Last House on the Left" but it brought something else to it. I never routed for the characters in Last house, but I did in this film. I really think this film is smarter than it looks.

Yes it's extremely low-budget. And yes it comes with the Troma tag on it, which almost instantly means low-brow, low-budget and probably bad. But I think this film is interesting. It is relentless in it's attacks , yes, but thats something horror fans always say they miss. When they get it they never want it cause it's too far---I think horror fans need to make up thier minds. It had developed characters. Now we are talking about a horror film, so don't expect a lot of depth but you have to admit they have charaterzation. The script takes the time to show you about them, and have us understand why they ( the girls) are friends.

What I do think is sad is that the horror film has a label of being mysoginistic. So the instant rape occurs in these films---alarms go off. Smut, explotation, evil evil devil. But that doesn't nesscarily mean that's so. This film has obvious sexual overtones but those are merely there to understand the perversions of the attackers. All those everyone screams this is just like " I spit on your grave" because it features a rape. Lets examine. Grave has a forty minute rape scene that is so brutal rapists would get sick. While Mother's day features a rather brief rape scene, where the girl is seen in a bra, the man's butt is exposed and it is intercut with other shots. There is deffinately a direct effort to keep the rape scene from being to gratuitous. When people watch that scene they always say how revolting it is. But if you rewatch, the really bizzare things come prior to the rape building a disgusting tension, and the rape it self is I think under 30 seconds. Of course there is the scene where the three girls play in the lake and you can see through there shirts, that no one can defend that is obvious "lets get some boobs in here", but then again it was 1980. If I recall right, weren't the only movies without nudity Disney movies.

This film is really easy to right off as garbage, and you may be right, after all everyone is intitled to their opinon. I myself like this film, all though it is very hard to take and is not good for rewind value. This is not the kind of movie you rent, watch, then watch again the next day. It's too strong for that. PS But I have to say ( this is the film maker/ horror fan in me talking) the pre title sequence is probably the best out of any horror film I have ever seen. Not for it's content, but that it accurately sets up the entire res t of the film. You pretty much know what your watching before "mother's day" ever comes across the screen.

this is the original Psycho remake
7 June 2003
I could have liked this movie a lot, if it wasn't practically a shot by shot remake of the 1930's version with Fredrich March. It essentially is. Maybe I just noticed this because Turner Classic Movies was having Jekyll and Hyde day and showed both films back to back. But when you compare this to the 1930's version. It fails. What's shocking is that this version is toned down. The violence, intensity and sexuality is turned way down, which I would have thought would be the other way around. It's still an interesting movie, but if you run across the two in a video store pick up The Fredrich March verison.

Wrong Turn (I) (2003)
9/10
Sorry, but this was a good movie
1 June 2003
Warning: Spoilers
There are so many negative reviews of this film. It seems like everyone who saw it ran back here to throw on all this negative stuff. While yes, this film should not win any Oscars. Hell, it maybe shouldn't even be a well known horror movie ten years from now---but it's decent.

It's a throw back to the 70's movie's, and as that it does it very well. It's a fast paced action horror movie did you want " In the bedroom" here. Yes the characters aren't all that developed, but it's purposely structured like the 70's films. " Texas Chain Saw" is a great film, but did we know anything about them, no. It was all situation, and how they dealt with it. So it this.

( Minor spoilers, don't freak--they aren't too specific) The film also skewers the conventional cliches for the most part. Most of it happens during the day, we are introduced to the mountain mens shack early. Instead of it being this ominous structure, that we get glimses at. No they show us the house, and they show it early.

And all the detractors who say the acting was sub-par. I'm sorry but I felt for Desmond Harrington, Eliza Dushku, and Jeremy Sisto. To a lesser extent Emanuelle Chirqui, but she was the screamy girl. It's hard to like her in any context played by any actress.

Everyone who I know said this film scared them, that they jumped several times. And that over all, it freaked the hell out of them. When it's said and done, isn't that all that really matters?

8.5 out of 10.

Okay, I'll buy it. . . .
29 April 2003
The fun in this movie is really the elaborate death scenes. They are really very clever even if you do have to wait for then at some times. Not that taking time to develop story/character isn't a good thing, but when you give an okay script to okay actors. .. your finger can wander for the fast forward button very quickly.

After the first hour or so the film does pick up, and has an interesting mystery to it, suspense and the really interesting deaths. Now for those of you who have scene it, and those of you who haven't there is a SCOOBY-DOO ending, try not to hate it to much.

Also the killers motive is a little SCREAM like, put this with the awful EVIL LAUGH and you've got SCREAM. Just a side not.

7/10 Pretty good film

Evil Laugh (1986)
I'd call it sinister giggle, but that's just me guys
6 April 2003
A group of med students spend the weekend fixing up an old house. Of course this was the site of a horrible massacre, and of course there is going to be a new slaughter this weekend with the med students on the menu.

I love horror movies frankly, so the plot of this movie doesn't exactly bother me. The slasher genre is the only one that can get away with using the same plot over and over again in my book. The problems with this movie is that once you move from the plot everything else is awful.

The character are written and acted like they come right out of a sitcom. ( one girl acts just like "chrissy" from THREES COMPANY) The actors are also very bad, but you can't blame then so much. Yes they can't act, but the script didn't help much. The dialogue is outright ridiculous.

The Gore is really unconvincing, and this looks to be filmed on video. Not that is uncommon today almost all horror movies ( and independent movies) are filmed that way now. But we have digital video, they have a 80's camcorder.

The movie also seems to be a showcase for Steven Baio, like every scene was structured to make him the focus even though he is not the main character.

What this film does have going for it is it's parallels to SCREAM. Some scenes are very similar. It does have one decent murder to it as well.

As bad as this movie is, I have to say there is something about it that made me rent it 3 times. of course it is because I found it to be hysterical, ( there is even a a spur of the moment dance number that had me on the floor crying from laughing) but hey, it put money in the producers pockets so I'm sure they don't care why I watched it.

Really bad ( 4/ 10)
