The American (2010)

Genia flick, something different
7 May 2014
Sorry, I must apologize, I intended to start off this review on a serious note, but.. ah well.. Firtly, Violante Placido has the most amazing pair of tits. Something gorgeous. There, done.

I watched this one a few years ago and I still remember it vividly and positively.

The American is a breath of fresh air. It avoids fitting into any mold, yet does not end up being artsy or pretentious.

I particularly enjoyed the pace of this film. It takes place in a "slow" region of northern Italy and the plot (what there is of it anyways) unfolds slowly. Somehow, watching this movie was like reading a contemplative novel on a sunny terrace on some summer afternoon, slowly turning the pages, sipping a smooth one.

I will not talk about the story as this movie is hardly about plot but encourage everyone to view it. A most enjoyable moment.

Romance in youth seen through the eyes of an older man
7 May 2014
To be honest, I'm not one for romance, be it in the streets, in books or on screen. However, I like to consider myself as an open-minded person an very much looked forward to watching this film from a director whose work I have sometimes loved (dazed and confused).

The story is simple, two people meet on a train, somehow manage to like each others' company in very short time and then spend a night walking the streets of Vienna, handing money to every beggar they meet and sucking up to the Austrian counter-culture.

I really did not like this film. Firstly, the characters are uninteresting. Hawke's Jesse appears to be mentally challenged and Delpy's Céline is a pretentious intellectual snob. Anyway, these guys spend a night talking about their half-cooked philosophy of the world and their idea of true, perfect love. You'll get the usual: rebel against your parents, true love never lasts, capitalism is bad, youth is good.

It seems obvious that the idea of this movie is to show two young people falling in true love. A type of love that everyone should wish for because it is pure. The viewer is supposed to be moved by the honesty and maybe naivety of these guys. And this is what seriously bothers me. This is a relationship seen through the eyes of an older person, nostalgic of the innocence of his youth. The result is that Jesse and Céline aren't authentic, they are not convincing, rather clichés, they are just somebody else's fantasies.

I did however enjoy the simplicity of this movie. The plot, the pace, etc.

Enough said.

The Hitman (1991)
Fantastic!
1 November 2011
Now this on has got it right! Everything in it is cool, starting with Chuck's mullet.

Like in many of his films, Chuck goes around killing people, in this case a bunch of shady maffiosi and a crew of Muslims.

I do not see this film being broadcast in Muslim countries as it contains quite a few very funny islamophobic jokes.

One thing that I love with Chuck Norris films is that you know he is going to go around and have a nice time killing people. The fact that it is so predictable gives it all its charm, though it does take away all the suspense. But suspense sucks anyway, we just want explosions and naked chicks! This is a film that you watch for a good laugh and to learn a few good one-liners that you might toss out in a intellectual conversation at your girlfriend's family dinner party.

Dull action flick with not much to it
1 November 2011
An American army officer and a nuclear scientist, or something of the like, try to gain control of stolen nuclear bombs, all this in the context of the ex-Yougoslavian conflicts.

There are a few good things about this film but they are outweighed by the flaws. First of all, this film is stuck between a good action-thriller (think Tony Scott stuff) and a silly film to amuse 10 year olds. Its problem lies in the fact that it could have been a nice "serious", fast-paced, well-directed action movie but turns out to be a diluted version of one (though well directed, I must admit). Where one might expect a little more violence or a rougher edge, you get Clooney cracking jokes and when you would like a little more gravitas given to the baddies, you get one-liners such as "I hate them because they are poor" (talking about middle-eastern refugees).

Another element I did not care for in this film is Nicole Kidmann. She is pretty but never convincing, never funny, always out of place and always too theatrical.

All in all, this film is light, Clooney is pretty cool but it remains a bit of a waist of time and will not make you laugh nor hold your breath.

Police Story (1985)
Bluffing stunts
21 October 2011
This is going to be one short review.

This movie contains a simplistic story: talented cop after drug lord - a few chicks - low-flying jokes.

And it gets better: the most brilliant, life-endangering stunts you could think of. Chan is like some very cool clown on speed with top class martial arts skills tossed in for some extra shine.

Watching this movie is like witnessing a good fireworks show. Starts off easy, goes crescendo and ends on a sustained high note.

You will not watch this movie for the plot, or even for the jokes, but for the incredible talent of Chan (and other stuntmen). Enjoy!

A movie about growing up
20 October 2011
This movie is somewhat like its soundtrack's main theme, after a short while you understand what it is about. However, the melody's catchy and it will stay in your head for a while.

The story is about a group of adults in their early 20s who all have to, each in their own way, learn how to live.

The amusing thing with the film is that it relies solely on stereotypical characters: the hottie who's more vulnerable than she wants to show (Demi Moore), the controlling, ambitious and self-centered businessman, the girls guy, the self-pitying poet, etc...

The acting is excellent, albeit overly-theatrical at times. I liked Rob Lowe's character in particular, thought it had a natural charm. For those of you who cannot stand Emilio Esteve, do not worry, his role is secondary.

To sum it up, I found this film to be light, positive and yet handing out some food for thought. Only draw-back is the stereotypes used to make the point and the pedagogical side given to the story.

Scanners (1981)

A great moment of sci-fi film-making
20 October 2011
To make it short, the story is about people with psychic powers. Of course, one of them (Ironside) uses his powers for evil and world domination, will some others try to live a normal life. Lack plays a gifted scanner who discovers throughout the film the true extent of his powers and the implications.

The movie is sci-fi at its best, a good dose of gore Cronenberg-style, a far-fetched story which unrolls pretty simply and some inspired filming.

To be honest, I found this movie to leave a love it or hate it impression on its viewers. Myself for one adored it, while friends (usually women) get very upset at the slightest mention of it. Hard to say why, probably because Cronenberg likes (used to like) to add some second-rate sleaziness to his movies.

For good old-fashioned sci-fi stuff, look no further!

Slow, dull, not much to it but a nice watch nonetheless
14 October 2011
Okay, well, Guy Ritchie, somewhat like Tarantino, has acquired wide respect from lots of people but without it being very clear why. Like Tarantino, the fans go around ranting about how great his movies are and saying that those who don't agree just aren't smart enough to really understand how profound and thoughtful his works are. IMHO, this movie, like Ritchie's others, has got a few nice moments, good pace, excellent acting and fun action. Jason Statham does a good job, sober and rude to his habit and Liotta was amusing as a UVed crook. I found the plot (Statham's got a few days left do live, so he goes around helping the men who may save him get their dirty deeds accomplished)uninteresting and completely lacking in suspense. Well anyway, if you like cheap philosophy and a bit of shooting/thumping/swearing, you will surely appreciate this one.

Excellent martial art movie - typical 80s testosterone
14 October 2011
Yes! This film is so cool I don't know where to start! Story: Eric Roberts is a martial artist. He joins the American kung fu (or karate or something) team to face Korea. Himself and his teammates have to train hard to overcome their past demons or their pride and become the best of the best. Only regret is that only Philip Rhee (Tommy Lee in the film) on the American team, is the only martial artist. It would have been great if all the actors were real martial artists, but anyway, it's fun to see Chris Penn smashing people's heads in. This film is a typical 80s production: sunsets, simple plot, hair metal, cool violence etc. It also contains a few extraordinary fight sequences, really pure martial arts. Loved it!

Komodo vs. Cobra (2005 TV Movie)
Very cool flick!
14 October 2011
Watched this film with friends, got drunk, cool evening!

The story takes place on some random island inhabited by a giant Komodo and a supersized, swimming Cobra. A group of people, including an alcoholic sea captain and a few bimbos, one of which is a scientist, end up being stuck on this island with nowhere to run.

What I found most enjoyable about this movie was the utter lack of the following: script, good acting and realism (apart from the giant creatures of course).

I you are the sort of person who enjoys seeing a giant komodo run after a chick with baywatch-size knockers, this film is for you. Otherwise, you might find this movie to be somewhat of an offense to your intellect.

(By the way, Jay Andrews (Wynorski or whatever this guys name is) did another film, Shockwave, with the exact same scenario, except that the cobra and komodo were replaced by alien robots, good stuff).
