The Graffiti Artist (2004)
Freeing Art, Freeing Yourself.
This movie truly didn't need dialogue. With a soundtrack by Kid Loco, and a story that is as surreal and beautiful-- the written dialog becomes a secondary in such a film. Nick aka "Rupture", the graffiti artist, is a loner. His artistic "tagging" gets him in trouble with the law where he finds himself moving from Portland to Seattle meeting up with Jesse aka "Flip." A relationship grows between them as they "tag" together and live together. They become intimate, Jesse becomes more uncomfortable with those feelings, takes flight back to Portland leaving a tragic Nick, high and dry. This movie is less about Nick and Jesse's relationship and more about the outstanding artist, Nick is, and what limits he will go to show it, even jail. Great dream-like movie that takes you into the life of an artist, a graffiti artist. I got to see it @ a Film Festival and cannot wait to see it again and again.
City by the Sea (2002)
The young shall lead the veterans.
Robert DeNiro...Frances McDormand Oscar winners, great actors, so why was I more intriqued by the spectacular performances by the supporting cast? James Franco brought to life a character that any other actor with this material would of bored us to death with (this not-so-great script.) I truly enjoyed this movie, don't get me wrong. I just found my feelings going more towards "Joey Nova" (James Franco) and Gina (Eliza Dushku). I was upset, as I have been lately with Robert DeNiro' characters'. His love for his son felt truly forced and Frances McDormands' character felt completely useless. If you have an actress like her, USE HER. I would have loved to see a lot more of James Franco and Eliza Dushku in this movie. Great Performances. You have a true story and you work with what you got....maybe we shouldn't make every true story into a movie.
Look out for these up and comers...and I, as always, am looking for new faces of DeNiro. Check it out if you are into cop drama's. 7/10
