Talk to Me (I) (2022)
5/10
About average.
19 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A bunch of dumb teenagers decide to replace drugs with possession as the new nightly recreational activity. The rules are simple: hold the outreaching embalmed hand and you will see the dead. Letting them possess you for under sixty seconds leads to an intense high that can rival the hardest drugs. If the possession goes above a minute, you might be in trouble. Mia has never been good at social activities and feels uncomfortable in large crowds. Still, that has never stopped her from hanging out with her best friend, Jade and following her into whatever nightly activities she is into. One such night led to the introduction of the hand after which Mia found herself being a willing participant quite regularly. Everything seemed fine till Jade's younger brother ends up with in the hospital in a coma and serious injuries after being possessed for too long. Things start spiraling out of control when she starts seeing the dead enter her dream and take control of her body without permission and even worse when one of them claims to be her recently deceased mother hinting towards a conspiracy involved in her death.

Switching the ouija board for an embalmed hand is different but not enough to be believable or any less ridiculous for a bunch of frat house rejects to prefer over booze and drugs. For the most part the acting and production quality are fine but I didn't find the movie doing anything unique to be memorable than a by the numbers horror. If anything, the events resolve a little too quickly and nothing is really explored. By the time Mia starts to realize her predicament, the movie ends. Its not terrible but its also not something I would recommend watching in the theaters.

Pretty Good!
28 September 2023
The first two being in the "so bad, it's good" category, I wasn't expecting much from this one. Maybe, it's because the expectations were so low for this movie that it ended up being a very pleasant surprise that it was actually well done.

While the plot is fairly straightforward, the characters and their interactions are smartly written and there are some clever use of spells to pull off a heist. All the characters were well suited for their roles and none felt overbearing or forced in anyway. Frankly, I cannot point to one single aspect of this movie that was annoying, which is a rarity today. Its hard to beleive such a movie can exist in this day and age. Unfortunately, the success of this movie creates a worry that Hasbro might try to create a bigger and better sequel that will unfortuantely ruin a potential new series of films going forward. Even if you are not a DnD fan, the movie can be watched as a fun medieval fantasy adventure. It's definitely worth a watch atleast once.

The Offering (2022)

Had potential...
27 September 2023
This movie was a bit of a surprise. With its low score, I wasn't expecting much from the acting or production quality but within the first 20 minutes I couldn't help questioning the low rating. This movie had a lot going for it, the story is not original but the acting was good enough to invest in the characters and I found the Jewish perspective of ancient evil quite interesting. Problem is a lot of movies and shows today struggle to successfully maintain quality and often tend to botch the conclusion. This, unfortunately, is the same problem with this movie.

As many have mentioned, the biggest flaw is outright revealing the monster. Besides a few lines of dialogue over the phone, the background and history of the monster is never explained. The CGI isn't terrible but conceptualization of the monster looked like it was a left over asset from the set of the Mummy. By the halfway point the movie switches pacing from a slow burn to pure chaos and the characters never seem to really get a grasp on what is happening. This might be a personal choice but I was never a big fan of central characters in a story being a hapless victim from start to finish with no growth. Sadly, the ending left me rather dissatisfied and I no longer questioned the low score left by the reviewers.

Dark Skies (2013)
7/10
Not bad for 2023.
19 September 2023
You know you have really scraped past the bottom of the barrel when you are actually going through youtube's list of free movies... even more strange is when you actually find something worth watching.

Dark Skies is a suspense/horror movie about a typical middle class family that suddenly find their home invaded by some malicious force or entity. Things start out slow with the odd events here and there but gradually builds up to something malicious as their youngest is revealed to be in contact with something known as the Sandman.

This is a very typical haunted house movie that shares similarities to "The Poltergeist" and "The Conjuring" movies. Besides a slight twist at the end it doesn't quite do anything new or different but most of it is done well enough with decent production quality and acting. It's a slow burn with minimal use of special effects and CGI till the very end and is quite effective in raising the intensity as it never truly reveals the monster. The biggest gripe I have against this movie is that I am a decade late and there have been plenty other movies that have done similar story tropes to death and over with mixed results. That being said I was rather surprised to actually find it even remotely interesting to watch and enjoy so that's somewhat of a feat in this day and age.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
8/10
A Rare Expensive Beast!
24 July 2023
I tend to gravitate towards fiction more than fact. Never been a big fan of war, true events or biographies and I wasn't sure about this one, especially with its three hour run time. Besides Dunkirk (skipped it for obvious reasons) I have yet to be disappointed by any of his works and took a chance. Yes, I even liked Tenet...

Robert J. Oppenheimer is often considered a controversial figure in the history of the US WWII. Dubbed as the father of the of the atomic bomb that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the title would begin to weight heavy around his neck as he would try to unsuccessfully appeal to the president against further use. Hailed as a hero and then eventually tried as a potential spy for the Soviets, his loyalty would come under question as the eventual regret of his achievement and his past dealings with the communist party is weaponized against him by someone fairly close to him but who?

I went in expecting a non eventful history lesson but got a movie with a slight mystery, instead. I am happy to say in today's climate, where it has gotten increasingly hard to bank on well known actors and directors to deliver a good film, Nolan still remains a reliable source for quality. His penchant for presenting scenes out of order, a slow but intense build of music in the background and short and quick lines of dialogue managed to keep the pacing quite brisk despite the long runtime and the lack of any actual action of any kind, it is simply brilliant. Perhaps not seeing any of the trailers and looking at a handful of reviews might have tempered my expectations? Or maybe I just got lucky that I found it entertaining unlike some of the movie goers around me. Eitherway, I will point out while this movie is great, its not perfect. You do need to go in with a tempered expectations as it has no action sequence, a lot of talk of theory and calculations along with a court drama towards the end. If you are expecting any scenes of war or action, you will be disappointed. However, if you have slight interest in science and are only vaguely familiar with name and facts around Oppenheimer, there is a story with a slight twist this movie tells and its well worth the watch atleast once.

Speaking of expectations, a lot of reviews seem to point out a certain singular moment as a caution and its possible that the version I saw had been edited but I have to ask 'WHERE WAS THE LONG GRATITOUS SEX SCENE??" Was it the intense breathing as the camera slowly pans by a wall? The only signs of nudity was a brief seconds of Oppenheimer sitting in a chair with his legs crossed, having a conversation. If this is a cause for concern then we have definitely gone backwards from the days of the FCC censorship. Because the scene is less than thirty seconds and subtle in a way where you don't really take notice.

Might as well be a video game.
21 June 2023
In John Wick 5, Wick wakes up from a decade long comatose dream to find himself in a life pod maintained by robots for harvesting in a future where the world is taken over by AI. Sound familiar? Seriously, the unrealistic lengths this movie series goes to defining Wick's capabilities, you might as well tie it into the Matrix universe or just have Keanu put on a cape and fight invading aliens at this point.

Chapter 4 is the final conclusion to the climax set in motion by the events of Chapter 2. After barely surviving the city wide bounty hunt set by the high table, John Wick once again emerges from hiding to settle his debt and to finally bury his violent past by making his way to a duel with the latest unhinged official put in charge of his death: The Marquis. The path to victory is made even more difficult with the Marquis enlisting the aide of former friends and equally skilled assassins from Johns past. While I can appreciate the hard work put into the action and even applaud the creators for focusing on their strengths but to say they leaned in too heavily into the action is putting things too mildly. It's more like they fell purposefully into it and by fall, I mean elbow drop. The amount of times this man has survived falling off a sky scrapper by landing flat on hard pavements, shootings and stabbings is well past Hollywood movie magic standards to make even an 80's action movie blush thrice over.

Unfortunately, this film suffers from the same issue as most superhero films are afflicted with, the level of excessive action at the cost of any actual acting that frankly feels better suited for a video game than a movie. The critics that claimed the orginal movie's plot was paper thin and the premise ridiculous had no idea how much wider and shallow the rabbit hole can get. Almost every venue is an introduction to an arena for an predictable battle and the focus on martial arts makes every simple encounter so elaborate that John never throws a simple punch at an enemy but has to use compex sets of maneuvers of mixed arts lasting more than a handful of minutes which ultimately ends with a gun shots to the head.

Frankly as a fan of the orignal, its begun to feel like the first movie is its own self contained movie and is divorced from the franchise the sequels set out to be. As the combat got more elaborate, the more exhausting the experience became and as a result I find the orginal movie to be the best of the series had to offer, maintaining a balance between action and acting that no longer exists in the following sequels. John himself becomes a stoic and shallow character with barely more than four or five basic lines in the whole movie with most of the talking flavor provided by the likes of McShane and Fishburn. Even then, their talents are used to a bare minimum and most of the movie is encapsulated with brutal and bloody fights. It would be no surprise if a following movie shows up its largely a silent film with no actual dialogue beyond the yelling that accompanies gun shots. I hate to say this but the modern audience have been reduced to adrenaline junkies that are mostly looking for a fix of just seeing their favorite actor on screen doing the same thing he has been doing with no real growth in character. It would be a surprise if Keanu Reeves is able to break away from John Wick persona if cast in a different film as acting is very much an afterthought in recent trends.

Fails to capture the "horror" element.
21 May 2023
I wouldn't call myself a hardcore fan of the series, but one way or another, I have managed to watch all of the Evil Dead movies at least once. Besides the original being remotely scary, the sequels trended downwards towards "goofy" territory. Despite the valiant efforts, this movie doesn't break that trend.

Ditching the cabin in the woods for a dingy apartment complex in the city, a single mother of three is waylaid by a surprise visit from her largely absentee sister one fateful night. However, the surprises don't stop there, as a random earthquake breaks loose the foundation of the building, which was once a bank, revealing a forgotten vault full of ancient religious artifacts and antiquities. This sets the stage for one of the siblings to investigate. It doesn't take long for the wayward youth to discover the Necronomicon, one of the three cursed tomes bound in human leather, written in blood, and conveniently coupled with a vinyl recording full of commentary on the previous owner's exploits. Only one of the siblings has the good sense to leave the book alone, but ignoring her advice, the aspiring DJ decides to open the book and play the recording, thus chaos ensues as it possesses their mother.

While the setting is boilerplate, if rather unrealistic (how did it end up in a bank?), the movie delivers on the gore and special effects. It was a pleasant surprise to see them pick something other than the cabin in the woods and not hold back on the teens either. The actress playing the mother does an excellent job in looking the part of someone possessed by a demon and has some genuinely creepy looking moments in the movie. I say "creepy looking" because it didn't feel creepy. In fact, I found myself yawning and looking at the clock several points during the height of the movie, and it's difficult to pinpoint why. While the lack of subtlety and suspense to build up the horror hurt its potential, I believe the acting was a larger part of the issue.

While not terrible, none of the characters are likable enough for me to be invested in their survivability, and none of them managed to convincingly sell the sense of genuine horror. Given their circumstances, they seemed remarkably composed, as if they went from being stunned to simply adapting to the nature of things, skipping the act of realizing the horror of the situation in between. At no point does anyone let out a bloodcurdling scream, not even the little girl that is subjected to having blood smeared all over her face as her family members mutilate each other. It would seem the normal city life is not so far off from the horror they were experiencing. The only person that managed to sell that sense of horror was the young woman at the very end as she notices the massacre in the parking lot. It made me feel like perhaps we should have been watching her story unfold in the cabin instead.

Either way I gave the movie props for trying to do something different than shamelessly retreading the orignal events and making it worse. A slower pacing and little more suspense along with better actors would have made this a more worth while endeavor.

Nope (2022)
3/10
Mocking the audience
3 February 2023
Frankly, I never considered Peele's movies as horror. Perhaps a satirical dark comedy at best, but even the premise of Get Out had my laughing out of my seat at the concept, especially when the director himself pretty much sums up the plot of the movie in such succinct manner. Since then I have to wonder if its just me or are his movies plots are just getting ridiculous. I can't help feeling like this movie was designed to mock the audience's inability to critique anything lest they be cancelled. It sort of remind me of an old folktale called The Emperor's New clothes that speaks about vanity.

Nope is a movie about a brother and sister suddenly burdened with their family ranch and all debts incurred along with it, after their father is killed under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately for them, the ranch valley is also the hunting grounds for a giant alien cowboy hat that hides within the clouds.

If its not obvious from the name of the movie, the entire premise feels like something that was formulated by Peele after one too many drinks at a party. The entire movie feels like a social experiment to gauge the general crowds intelligence or lack thereof. Its rather ironic that we continue to make fun of M. Night Shamalayans movies yet somehow try to convince ourselves that this film is clever because its too on the nose with its ridiculous plot.

There are movies that work better on the big screen while others are better off with the direct to TV format. Unfortunately neither format really elevates it from the feeling that you are being taken on a ride by robbing of your time and money.

Glass Onion (2022)
4/10
Rian Johnson is Miles Bron.
18 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be honest, I didn't care for Looper. There were some decent ideas in it but overall the movie just fell flat. Not being a Star Wars fan, I managed to dodge the bullet that heralded the franchise's downward projection and I wasn't sure about the first Knives Out movie after seeing his name attached to the credits but it actually managed to win me over. Then I watched The Glass Onion which had Johnson's name predominantly displayed over the title... the conclusion is that if you see his name, its a clear warning of a disaster.

The movie starts off with caricature depiction of one dimensional celebrity characters being invited to a private island for a week to engage in a murder mystery themed party thrown by an eccentric and "genius" billionaire, Miles Bron. About to reveal a world changing discovery, Bron decides to rekindle his bonds with his old friends before going public. The one odd exception is the presence of an equally eccentric detective, Benoit Blanc, that was never invited. However, the event starts taking a darker turn when one of the guest is actually murdered and its up to the detective to solve the mystery.

Frankly, none of the characters are likeable or relatable and the social commentary is quite obvious which starts the movie off at an uneven footing but the mystery does manage to catch your attention till it is brutally crushed by the second half. By the end the difference in intellect between the first and second movie are apparent as night and day. While much more lighthearted setting than the previous, the comedic interactions are not really funny and giant McGuffin that it throws half way into the movie deflates any cleverness the movie managed to deliver till that point. The end resolution is that one of the main character throws a tantrum and bungles her way into a debatable resolution that is neither fulfilling nor enlightening and least of all clever...

I tend to like movies that can keep me guessing. Not to toute my own horn but I am fairly decent at predicting the way movies go and it was a breath of fresh air to have the first movie completely blindside me while revealing a much more sinister plot than I had imagined. It was meticulously crafted witih layers of twists that you can only guess at but can never be too sure. However, with Glass onion, I already knew who the killer was without having actually make any real guesses. If you have seen Edward Norton's earlier movies you know what I am talking about as it is very rare that he plays the innocent victim. Much like Looper, there were some decent ideas that built up to an intrigue, but the conclusion was just utter garbage. Johnson unfortuantely lacks subtlety when it comes to fleshing out characters and his disdain for a certain eccentric billionaire in real life is very obvious throughout the movie. Although he was a part of Knives Out it was a collaborated group effort which where he is at his best. Miles Bron may have been created with Elon Musk in mind but ultimately it reflects Johnson's incapability of writing an original script and his penchant of destroying a potential franchise.

The Last Coffin Nail.
6 December 2022
I liked the first movie but the other two were largely forgettable. Frankly I wasn't even aware the creators of the franchise had gone through an entire gender swap prior to this movie but once that was common knowledge, their return to the Matrix was pretty much guaranteed failure. The people that made the orignal are not the same people that made this abomination, they may share the same physical space but thats about it.

The biggest problem we have in this industry and the country today is psychological war most people seem to wage against their own existence. This in turn requires them to turn their previous works of effort into something that suits their current perspective. Unable to create anything on their own merits, these "Ex Men" feel the need to capitalize on previous works that they no longer understand or respect but in doing so only corrupt the whole foundation. This is the unfortunate reality of Matrix 4. The insecure need to change the very fabric of the story from the chosen one to an ensemble a stark contrast to the ideology of the orignal creators intent which pretty much killed this franchise for good. It will be interesting to see if the Sisters can create anything actually worthwhile after this but I have my doubts. At least one of the two sisters had enough common sense to not return to the project.

This is perhaps one of the worst Keanu Reeves movie I have seen a long while eventhough there has been many. I like Keanu but there is no denying that his particular talents make him better suited for specific roles and this is a role he can no longer fit into. His time away from the Hollywood spotlight has changed his character quite a bit and it doesn't fit the role of the cynical Mr. Anderson/Neo. It didn't help not having Fishburne reprise his role as Morpheus but the cheap reality TV show like feel made things a lot less grandiose and cheap. The bigger question is why did this movie even need to exist? Matrix Reloaded had already concluded the story, with a less than compelling ending but a cohesive ending none the less. This movie just feels like a descent into madness of a mind that is no longer attached to its body. The only thing I can say is "My God! What an abomination this is!"

Not bad actually!
28 November 2022
There are some few issues with this film. First of all it seems to have a false start, where a woman that rented out an BnB in a very questionable part of town in Detroit and that too being the only house in the area that is still intact amid a largely abandoned and ruined town, only to find that it has been occupied by some another person that claims to be a BnB customer himself. Thus starts an uneasy arrangement between two strangers and the awkwardness of trust that one of them isn't an unhinged lunatic with hidden intentions in a house with its own deep dark secrets underneath.

The build up was great up to this point till the movie cuts away and starts all over again this time with an actor suddenly finding out he is being sued for sexual scandal witih one of his co-workers and is at the brink of losing his livelihood as all of his movie deals are suddenly put on hold. Having to recoup funding for the upcoming lawsuit against him, the actor finds himself visiting one of his properties and the only standing house in an abandoned, decrepit town in Detroit. Where he finds the house to have a deeper secret than being being the only livable structure in the entire town.

It felt like the writers couldn't decide which introduction to stick with and decided to use them both. While this isn't an uncommon tactic, the sudden reset squanders the intensity that was already built up in the fist act. Thankfully, both them are well written enough that I still found myself invested in how things connect. Although frankly, the first act although good could have been a part of a different movie. The reveal of the houses' deep dark secret is equal parts surprising and a little bit disappointing as it pivots to an entirely different genera after setting up an intense situation about trusting strangers. Still though, the acting and direction was decent enough that you will have an entertaining ride to the end, despite the leaps in logic with some of the reveals. This could have been a lot worse if both intros were not well executed luckily both of them were pretty interesting that I was fine with going with it.

Black Panther (2018)
3/10
I still don't get it.
28 November 2022
I remember thinking this movie was mediocre at best when I first saw it but there was a delayed fervor for this movie that blew up overtime that made me reconsider watching it again. I have to say my opinion hasn't changed. I remember discussing this movie with a friend at the time as he was a big fan of the movie but most of his reasons seem to be in the political aspects of representation. Not really about the quality of the film itself.

There is a decent story in there but the way it was executed was just terribly bland and immature. Like a teen that thinks too highly of himself and considers himself the best at everything. Its like they wanted to portray Wakanda as the perfect civilization with no flaws beyond wanting to remain hidden from the rest of the world.

I was personally very impressed with the Black Panther character when he was first introduced into the MCU in Civil War. Boseman fit that role perfectly but in this movie there wasn't much depth to his character and there wasn't much Boseman had to work with. After his death (RIP), there was a very fanatical uprising where it just seemed to be about representation and nothing much else. Not being an African American or white for that matter, I don't really have the same stock in this film and found it mostly forgettable. Not really sure I care about the sequel as its firmly routed in that political mindset of representation and now that Boseman is no longer available to play the lead, its no longer a film about Black Panther.

Today I feel the bar for quality story telling has been significantly lowered to the point that you need to step back and really read the comments and reviews to see exactly what they are praising. A movie with a high rating doesn't automatically make it a good movie. The motivations behind the fame seems to firmly be routed in political discourse outside the movie itself.

Disappointment is the only horror in this show.
13 October 2022
I have enjoyed most of Flannagan's work with the Midnight Mass likely being his best offering to date. After watching this show, my opinion hasn't changed. While far from perfect, Flannagan's work genreally posses a fair bit of creativity when it comes to defining ghosts and horrors. His biggest weakness seems to be able to definitely conclude the stories that often borders onto theatrical levels of expositions. Still, in most cases the main story is concluded to a satisfying degree regardless of the expositions. Things have gotten better overtime and I was interested to see if he finally figured out how to make a final conclusion to a tale without the theatrics.

Unfortunately, The Midnnight Club is likely the weakest offering and lest conclusive the shows to date. With an interesting premise dealing with terminally ill patients dealing with death, this show works somewhat like an Anthology with short stories building up to a greater encapsulating mystery. Unfortunately, in this case, the show rarely rises to any sort of occasion and we are instead left with mind-numbingly amateurish short stories for ten episodes with just bookending of a greater horror that never convalescences into anything meaningful. I suppose it makes sense in context that the stories are told by normal teenagers and not established authors and I guess the dissatisfaction emulates the disappointment of a life barely lived.

Subverting expectations can be tricky and the replacement has to even more interesting or about the same. Failing that you are bound to alienate your staple fans and possible newcomers. This is a gross misstep in an otherwise a pretty positive track for Flannagan. I suppose the warning signs were there when Netflix suddenly put more focus on the advertising and the first story is a riff on jump scares. I suppose Anya claiming herself to be a tougher audience was just bravado and nothing more.

I will wait and see what the reviews are for the house of the Usher as I am not interested in wasting my time on halfbaked originals.

Surprisingly held my attention.
13 October 2022
Being an ex Stephen King junky I was in the mood for some horror and gave this movie a shot. I have to agree with most of the other reviewers on here in that this is not a horror movie. It has some very mild elements but the focus is more about a boy getting past his grief of losing a valued friend and mentor.

Mr. Harrigan (Sutherland) is a wealthy, retried business leading a reclusive life in a quiet town. Having a fearsome, if somewhat cruel reputation from his venturing days, most people in town give him a clear berth except a young teen named Craig (Martell). After listening to him read at church, Mr. Harrigan hires Craig to read him old literature each week. Thus begins a budding relationship between a man at the end of his life and a kid at the start of his. Eventually the old man passes but not before Craig gifts him with an iphone which was buried with the body. Not completely over the passing of his close friend and mentor, Craig would call the buried phone and leave messages that suddenly started getting answered with deadly results.

This is another movie that wouldn't have been very watchable if it wasn't for strong acting and well written script. The relationship between Mr. Harrigan and Craig is quite charming and his input on the future of digital information is quite depthful. Martel is relative an actor I am not familiar with but does a great job to keep the movie going till the very end after Sutherland is out of the picture. For that I award it a +1 for managing to still be fairly entertaining without really having anything quite compelling. A rare feat from Netflix and a decent effort.

Has potential but didn't quite do it.
13 October 2022
I watched this along with another rom-com movie called Mr. Right. The latter, I found, hilarious and hitting all the right beats while this didn't quite feel as entertaining.

Mike Howell (Eisenberg) is a completely inept, pot smoking, store worker with no aspiration and very lucky to be loved unconditionally by his loyal girlfriend (Larson)... so it would seem. Mike's seemingly mundane inept day is about be turned upside down when a middle aged lady walks into store and rambles a phrase and walks away. Soon after Mike finds himself being targeted by elite killers as well as possessing lethal skills to terminate the threat and rescue his girlfriend that has been held hostage by the outfit's leader.

While the acting is fine, the material itself doesn't necessarily exude the charisma Mr. Right manages to exudes. I initially found Mike pretty annoying and then just become annoyingly lethal. I wasn't quite as much invested in any of it and the conclusion was obvious. Its not terrible per se but its has a ho hum nature to the entire movie where none of its really funny beyond a few one liners between Topher Grace. The movie has the look of a lowkey subtle comedy but lacks writing and script likes the finesse needed to carry this delicate balance. The movie is not terrible but it wasn't quite as entertaining either. You could do worse with Netflix's offerings.

Mr. Right (I) (2015)
8/10
Ridiculous but entertaining.
13 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't gravitate towards rom-coms too often but I was looking for some laughs late last night and this movie somewhat stuck out from Netflix's usual offerings. Right off the bat there were a few things that already looked promising about the movie:

1) It wasn't a Netflix original which is a 50% odds the movie is actually going to feel like a movie.

2) Sam Rockwell is always reliable to give a good performance.

3) It was created in 2015, from an era where people still knew how to make a movie and not a statement.

I am glad to say I was right as I couldn't stop chuckling at the ridiculously nonchalant nature of the movie. Francis, an oddball assasin with a reputation for killing his clients, dances into town looking to eliminate his latest hire while falling instantly for Martha (Kendrik), who is just fresh out of a bad relationship all the while the chaos that follows behind him makes it a little complicated to pursue romance.

I have to be honest, it would be very hard to buy into this movie's quirky nature were it not for the chemistry between Anna Kendrick and Rockwell and an overall, great performance from the surrounding cast. The opening music as well as Rockwell dancing his way down the hall to his target, pretty much sets the tone where it highly suggested leaving your brains and logic behind as go with the flow of the charm. Its a pretty fun ride if you are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The romance and comedy angle were well balanced and the movie doesn't focus too long on any of it and lends a very nonchalant and brisk pace to it. If there is anything to complain is that the plot is pretty basic but is entertaining thanks to the talents on screen and a well written script.

Memory (I) (2022)

Actually pretty decent.
2 October 2022
Liam Neeson finally realizes he is getting too old to keep playing an assassin in every movie and finally decides to hang it up before his advanced Alzheimer compromises him. However, the movie contract requires him to still hit their monthly quota and retirement is not an option.

After suffering a morality crisis involving killing a teen girl, Neeson, in classic fashion decides to go on a crusade to royally botch up the contract by assassinating the client that hired him. However, this not being the usual action flick, things get complicated as Neeson soon finds out what the hit was all about while running into a local detectives cross hairs investigating the death of the same teen that Neeson didn't kill. A teen the detective finds himself responsible for putting her there, unknowingly.

This straight to DVD script is raised above generic levels by having Neeson break the mold and actually act for once and that too in a movie where he isn't always in control of the situation. While the movie initially follows the tired beats of one of the "Taken" movies, it veers off into refreshingly unexpected trajectory when Neeson actually acts his age and isn't portrayed as the flawless killing machine he generally tends to be. With some well known respectable actors as the supporting case, in particular Guy Pierce, this made the case for me to actually give this movie a try instead of rolling my eyes and looking for something else.

I have to give Amazon credit for actually pulling off a fairly decent movie that doesn't rely on heavy action to sell the script. This movie is a slow burn of sorts with sparse action and the focus more on being on the actual hit and the mystery surrounding it. While none of it is anything new its delivered in a more confident fashion with some effort put into the writing. It was worth a watch.

Joker (I) (2019)
6/10
Better off on its own.
1 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Being a fan of the Nolan's Trilogy, I have been putting off watching this movie despite its high accolades. After finally running out of choices, I eventually gave it a try. I will say that a portion of the praise is well desrved as this is definitely a quality film but looses a lot of ground by being a part of the DCU instead of being its own film. Well acted and written, Phoenix gives us a depressing look at the life of Arthur Fleck, a very traumatized individual, slowly driven to insanity by the burtal violence and lies in the world around him. Problem is that at no point does Arthur feel like anything remotely close to the Joker like persona or even exudes the same charisma. He just comes off as just a troubled individual. Joker is insane but he is also very cunning and sound when it comes to carrying out plans. Arthur is just... pathetic...

The reason it took me so long to watch this movie is frankly because Nolan's trilogy has given us the best version of the Joker possible, in my opinion. What makes Heath Ledgers joker so terrifying is the fact that he is a man with no history that just shows up in Gotham one day and starts creating havoc. The lack of an origin makes him that much more unpredictable and chaotic. So defining/humanizing him further with an overtly melodramatic origin story just tends to take away from his fearsome reputation. While this movie is well crafted, it really shouldn't have been a part of DC at all.

I have to be honest, unlike Marvel, DC does have a lot of decent one off films before the metaverse became a thing and lot of people remember them fondly. Marvel had very few films besides Spiderman and Wolverine that did well before Ironman 1 so it was easier for them to restart from scratch and create a shared universe. DC has to prove that they can create a more interesting metaverse and characters or at least comparable to some of their past achievements to stand a chance. They also need to stop following beat by beat what Marvel does because they will never be more than an inferior mimmic. Its best to take some of the influences and mold something of your own brand. Unfortunately the fans are as desperate as the company where its more about the brand than the actual quality. Things are not looking good for DC unless they decided to stop caving into popular demands and grow a backbone. Personally, I don't fault the choices Warner Discovery has made by annexing projects and films... yet. They have to prove that they can actually put out quality. Marvel is already exhausting the superhero genere by churning of barrel scraping content. DC isn't doing any favors following suit.

Watching pre-pandemic movies makes you wonder what happened??
12 September 2022
This is ironically a movie I missed until just now. I don't have a lot of faith in Netflix's content, I wasn't expecting this movie to be more than another one Netflix's flatlined originals and I was wrong. Then I looked at the date and the publisher and realized that I was more right than I thought I was...

Not a big fan of romantic comedy but this was fairly well done. Genuinely funny and touching and that too with a cast of well known actors. Its a bit unreal to see something like this today, feels like a relic from a long lost civilization that no one even remembers. Its like making a good script is an lost art that has been replaced by heavy CGI superhero flicks and controversial statements. The movie focuses on a faithfully wedded man since he was 17, suddenly having to discover the bachelor lifestyle after his soulmate, spontaneously asks for a divorce. He is befriended by a well meaning womanizer that helps him find his bearings in his new life all the while both of their personal lives slowly starts spiraling out of control.

Was never a big fan of Carrell and I was expecting more simpler character than the one I got and it was refreshing to see him play a more relatable person than a kooky character from the office. I actually forgot who Gosling was prior to the pandemic. He felt like an anomaly that just suddenly appeared on screen during the pandemic. It took me a minute to connect the two since its sort of hard to imagine the Grey Man having much chops to play more complex and human characters. Its like watching Jason Statham jump from the Guy Ritchie films to one trick pony action flicks. I you just can't see this person play anything other than a hardass.

Its rather ironic that Netflix was created for movies but seems to lack some serious quality and variety in that area and there are less than a handful of shows that make it barely worth the price. Anyway if you are bored from the bottom feeding garbage that masquerades on netflix, give this a shot. Might actually surprise you by holding your attention till the very end.

Writing suffers from inferiority complex.
30 August 2022
Disclaimer: Opinion is based on the 1st episode only: Already had a review out, it didn't make it. Likely because the title was too on the nose, much like this show tends to be.

I lost a majority vote at a party and had the displeasure of watching the first episode of this uninspired trash. Frankly, only dabbled with comics back in my prime so I am more into the movies for a good plot and direction regardless of the material. Never really cared for the Hulk in general and the "Smart Hulk" seemed even less interesting of a character. I certainly had no plan on watching a "comedy" about a smart hulk being a lawyer but here I am.

Frankly, the biggest problem with shows like these is that the female lead is always passed off as "perfect" without anything actually feeling like its rightfully earned. Its like the writers don't have the patience to create and build the character over the episodes and seasons and just want to cheat ahead. Its hard to buy into the reality that someone who just turned into superhero overnight can easily best another who has been playing superhero for decades? Experience doesn't seem to count when it comes to a women. Its like a baby crawled up to an adult and yelled "walk a mile in my shoes!!"

The lawyer angle is another issue. I feel like the creators simply just chose a setting that looks the smartest but its purely for cosmetics. Seeing the lead character actually being a good lawyer would go some ways to bring depth to her personality. So far its only one episode in but there is nothing about Maslany's character that I would call likeable. Also taking pot shots at another or having someone be the constant butt of your jokes is the cheapest form of comedy/empowerment and it stops being funny when you keep doing it. Using someone's accomplishment as launch pad to show of your unearned superiority just comes off petty.

Unfortunately, I think I was right about Marvel getting lucky with a few good movies at the start of the MCU (IM1, Cap America 1-3, Infinity War) and is now regressing back to its old ways of overly relying on cheap humor. Frankly, its insulting when the best the female characters tend to be are just shallow facsimile of characters that already exist and are well established.

Carter (2022)
1/10
Horrible Video Game but decent graphics.
25 August 2022
Its been a while since I have watched international movies but I can't believe this miserable excuse is what passes off as action blockbuster overseas.

The movie stats off with your main character waking up in a motel and then all hell breaks loose. The action is nonstop, chaotic and unrealistic to the point where I was convinced that everything was taking place in some simulation that will be introduced later. Couple this with the director's constant infatuation with wide angle camera sweeps in a single shot, which frequently zooms out of the chaotic action to sweep the lay of the land which seems largely computer generated.

This movie must have been produced during the quarantine since most of the scenes take place in interior sections full of greenscreen CGI and the outdoors feel completely fake. Couple that with constant change in POV and no downtime after any action sequence makes it close to a vomit inducing rollecoaster ride off the rails. You have to be on meth or speed to actually catch up to this movie but its definitely not worth it as none it really pays off.

There is apparently a layered political espionage going on between North and South Korea but on top of that there are zombies. However, due to the terrible acting/dialogue and unrealistic action, the zombies don't really have any real presence beyond just cannon fodder for an action sequence which is the whole movie. There are hardly any downtime and most of is used for exposition dumps like a bad action game. This movie is definitely aimed at the local crowds as it does not explain the situation and constantly throws random names of people at you that most that are not familiar with Korean politics will be lost.

The worst offender is the camera. Transitioning between wide area sweeps and and continous single shot that does not compliment the action or the film in any way. Like a bad case of Tourette's the director can hardly wait five minutes before making a transition. The over use of contrast and color also adds to the unrealistic nature of the world where everything just feels fake. Its very hard to believe any of it is happening in a real world as none of it feels real at all.

Unless you are into heavy mind altering durgs/medication, this movie is hard to keep up with and its just not worth it to keep up. Whoever made this movie needs to go back to film school and start from scratch. This movie made the Grey Man look like a movie with an actual soul in comparison...

Constantine (2005)
8/10
Still the best version of Constantine.
20 August 2022
Pretty sure I already had a review of this movie a while back but I just re-watched it again and it still is as entertaining to watch as it had been on my first day watching it in the theaters with a college friend. Although, I must admit, not really knowing much about the DC universe beyond the JLA, Keanu Reeves was my first introduction to Constantine, at the time and is still is the best portrayal of the character despite being the most inaccurate. To date I have yet to find someone else play the character with the same level of cynical charm although the actress that played Joanna Constantine in The Sandman wasn't bad at all.

Matt Ryan's version was ironically the worst despite being the most accurate to the comic in terms of looks but his persona was really annoying. Its like that kid in school trying his hard to pretend he is British and gets picked on for it. Everytime I saw Ryan in the scene I felt an urge to smack him at the back of the head and tell him to stop pretending. There is a good reason that show failed.

Its a pity Keanu Reeves feels like an entirely different person today and I am not sure he would be able to play this role again today. The story felt like a Constantine well past his glory days, trying his best to buy his way into heaven before the cancer gets to him. I would have loved to seen a sequel but its too late now and I doubt it would be quite as entertaining.

The Sandman (2022– )
7/10
Surprisingly decent.
20 August 2022
I generally don't make it a habit of watching something I have already read and vice versa. Keeps the Bias in check. That being said I have to say this was a surprisingly decent show considering Netflix sophomore storytelling capabilities. Having only briefly dabbled with the comics, my knowledge of the DC universe doesn't extend all that far beyond the JLA (with Superman being my favorite). I have to give Kudos to Netflix for having put some genuine effort into this that goes beyond the special effects and cinematic look. The show has an almost surreal dreamy pace that makes it almost hard to distinguish between the real world and fantasy. Its not perfect but atleast it beats just having only Stranger Things as the only anticipated show on the platform. Truly ironic that a platform originally dedicated to movies has more TV shows worthwhile than actual movies.

This is one of those few shows where the cast and characters did not feel out of place despite changes made to the orignal content and am grateful for not having any prior knowledge of the actual comic series. Tom Sturridge does a great job playing the lord of dreams as does rest of the cast but I found The Corinthian's character particularly slick. However, its not perfect and I found the events after episode 6 not quite as interesting as the first half. While there were interesting things going on, I didn't particularly find all the characters in the latter half all that interesting beyond the Vortex. Sadly, as much as I liked the Corinthian, his character really didn't do much beyond try to warn and influence a few people (and mostly fail) and then effortlessly get dispatched at the end of a conference...

The woman that played Joanna Constantine actually did a fine job of playing the character. Despite not looking anything like the comic counter part I still find Keanu Reeves version the best with Ryan fellow in that failed CW show being the lest charming (despite looking the most accurate).

While I did enjoy season 1, the latter half of has me worried that Season 2 might not be as interesting. There signs of Netflix taking a little too many liberties and making changes that might be underwhelming. Here is hoping Netflix doesn't lose track of who the main character is and starts mostly using it as a platform to launch their own characters that don't really belong.

Altered Carbon (2018–2020)
6/10
Netflix really needs to some undermining every show by forcing it to appeal to everyone.
20 August 2022
I haven't read the books and I generally don't watch shows based on works I have arleady read. Lacking the frame of reference allows my bias to keep the critiques mainly to the show for what it is to me. That being said, I didn't like Season 1 nearly as much as most other reviewers tend to rate it. Pacing issues aside, there were too many events layered on top of each other that made things chaotic to follow. Still the show did have some genuinely interesting world with events in it with a fairly complex tale somewhat bordering on the ridiculous. A second viewing definitely helped digest things a lot better but it didn't change my initial opinions all that much.

Season 2 just doesn't feel like its the same show. I had to keep reminding myself that its a sequel to very different season 1. The world and writing is completely dumbed down to generic TV show levels where you can see the tired tropes being forced in to the point where the main character is mostly playing an errand boy to someone else's story. It also has a bad habit of dangling the characters from the first season without any real point to any of it than a one off fight. I like Mackie but he was an odd fit as a replacement lacking the finesse Kinnaman brought to the scene. I feel like Kinnaman got unfairly replaced just to please vocal crowd of extremists that are too concerned about looks over quality. That being said I doubt even if Kinnaman wasn't replaced, this second season would still be lacking in many ways. Taking season 2 as its own show works alright, but in context to season feels like a forced sequel with nothing quite as interesting or elegant to it. At certain points I felt like I was watching an episode of the Expanse...

Netflix and almost every other streaming platform seems to have this habit of diluting quality to try and please everyone. At best you get a sub par show that fizzles out quicker since there is nothing compelling about it. So far most of shows and movies seem to mostly ape cinematic quality of story telling without any real depth to it, hence often feeling very one dimensional and hardly anything premium over the general garbage shows that regular networks tend keep churning out. Seriously, if streaming original content for platform providers is the future, the bar for entertainment has been severely lowered.

Peacemaker (2022– )
2/10
I feel like I participated in a hate crime.....very offensively written.
14 January 2022
Don't know or cared much about Cena. I was on my way out of wrestling when he became the champ. Saw him in The Marine, total garbage and that was it till I watched Suicide Squad. Enjoyed that one quite a bit, this one is actually getting harder to watch 2 episodes in.

First off, I would have loved to hear the pitch that was really made to Cena for this show. Because this is not the same character from the movie. In the film, Peacemaker is a complete Douche Bag, ignorant of the irony in his philosophy but a competent killer. Competent enough to make a complete screw up seem cool. Here though, he is a complete and utter pathetic buffoon. Suddenly, inept at everything... he is the punchline to every joke and it felt like it should have been a sit com. No one is really likeable in this and jokes are very maliciously written. I have watched and liked a few of Gunn's films and know enough that this is not his style. They hired someone very angry at a specific group of people and is shoving every bit of extremist philosophies into this show. I am really hoping there is some redemption for Peacemaker in the show because its just really brutal to keep watching. I feel like its a hate crime in the making. Good luck to this show but I am definitely out.
