Like Mike (2002)
I've watched this movie several times already
just had to put in my 2 cents because of all the old and poor reviews. I'm not ashamed, but I've watched this movie several times already this past month!! granted, I caught it in bits and pieces at first. but ultimately this is a charming fantasy movie. who cares if Michael Jordan is never mentioned in name or makes an appearance?! at the risk of losing all credibility, I also thought "Eddie" starring Whoopi Goldberg was another great fantasy sports movie.
anyhow, the Morris Chestnut character reminded me of the LL Cool J character in "Deliver Us From Eva." very likable. Crispin Glover plays his usual role. Brenda Song is cute, and hope that bigger better things happen for her. Jonathan Lipnicki is getting more annoying to watch, I almost wish he'd just quickly grow up and become another child actor failing to make it as an adult. sorry that sounds so mean ;-) I don't know any of his music, but Bow Wow is a great natural actor, and I can't wait to see his upcoming movies.
Gin gwai (2002)
foreseeing the future
there are several movies with this similar theme, but I think this version is the best. other reviews have already described the plot in detail. I just want to applaud the editing, camera work, and pacing.
many feel the Thailand second half of the movie is problematic, but I actually enjoyed it better. the idea of the unlucky "witch" child who could tell which villager was going to die - that was a neat twist! my thoughts after viewing this movie actually centered upon this ability to tell the future. when the movie ends, the main character is at peace with the lost of her gift.
there are a bunch of great horror and mystery films coming out of Asia, esp. Japan and Hong Kong. I hope that lots of other viewers will be inspired to check those out.
Patton (1970)
the real Patton had a high squeaky voice
of course this movie is excellent. much has been published on Patton the man. I suppose most viewers have watched this movie first, and then been motivated to read such books. I was shocked to learn that the real Patton had a high squeaky voice, and like other viewers feel that George C. Scott was a great casting decision. like Star Trek's Picard, I would have followed George C. Scott's Patton onto the battlefield.
I guess lots of folks have watched this movie to study leaders and leadership. no matter how much people criticize Patton, esp. his foul language, clearly he put in the time and effort to learn his stuff. I really like that scene where he can image an ancient battle on a currently empty field, where we understand the German officer's analysis of Patton the man as being an anachronism. somebody born after his time. in fact, those German scenes really added depth to this movie.
Patton is a long movie, but well worth watching at least once from beginning to end.
For Richer or Poorer (1997)
Amish reminder of all we needed to know we learned as a child
granted this is not high brow sophisticated comedy, but it was actually a really fun movie! Kirstie Alley was not her usual annoying self, and it was enjoyable to watch her character change due to the Amish influence. Tim Allen was more relaxed and less of a ham, so his character was fun to watch. the Newman mailman guy from the Seinfeld show always cracks me up. the Amish child was cute too.
the Amish were not disrespected, and this movie made me want to learn more about the Amish. just a quick and simple Google search for Amish brought up several good sites. perhaps this is the real success of this movie - that viewers hear the message of simplicity and virtue in living one's life, then take the next step to learn more about the Amish culture and beliefs, and finally take to heart these life lessons we learned as a child.
