Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Some stories should be left alone leaving it up to the viewer to interpret and not pursue further.
Just finished watching. I can understand why Denis Villeneuve shaved off scenes as the story would be the length of another film I loved called WATCHMEN over 3 hours.
Visually, the film is very good coming in close to it's 1982 predecessor. The digital rendering, rotoscope animation and the artists that helped bring all of that to life is impressive. The entire cast also did a very good job. However the critical scene that caught me was the recreation of "Rachel" who was portrayed by a then 22-year old Sean Young 36 years ago (she's 57 now by the way). That is computer animation, talented artistry and digital imaging at it's finest.
That being said, truth be told I am not happy that this sequel was made much less the three short films preceding it explaining this story 30+ years later. The thing with me is some stories are FINITE. Some stories should be left alone leaving it up to the viewer to interpret and not pursue further.
Again, great work to the cast and crew. But it should not have been done.
Requiem for the American Dream (2015)
Tragic and truthful.
"Chomsky finds the roots of the Requiem in how the United States was originally set up. The U.S. Constitution put power in the hands of the wealthy. The Constitution was written to prevent, not promote, democracy. Concentrations of wealth resulted in concentrations of political power. The course of our history has been defined by the struggles of this wealth and political power against upsurges in democratization, most notably in the 1930s labor movement and the 1960s peace, civil rights and women's movements.
Power and wealth fought back against these popular movements by trying to shape ideology and manufacture consent. Elections are engineered. Attempts to regulate the economy are undermined. Solidarity of the American dreamers is attacked. As Chomsky has shown through earlier work ("Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media" with Edward S. Herman, 1988) control was extended beyond the use of force into the domain of culture by marketing compliance and marginalizing dissent.
Chomsky himself provides an example of the extent to which dissent is marginalized when he chooses to avoid mentioning by name the great sources of ideas which help us understand how power and wealth function: socialists like Gramsci, Lukacs or even the scholar of the British Museum himself.
Rather than end his dissertation in despair, Chomsky offers elements of hope, if not exactly a well lit path to redemption. Popular movements, efforts to dismantle illegitimate authority, freedom of speech and new forms of political action all offer hope. He cites philosopher John Dewey's admonition that institutions should be under participatory democratic control. What matters, relates Chomsky quoting his friend Historian Howard Zinn, is the countless deeds of unknown people who lay the basis for the events of human history. Ultimately, learning how the world works will greatly aid in changing it."
Looking (2016)
utter crap
Just like the series, the movie was sheer crap.
I'm from the east coast grown up in New York and New England. Having lived in San Francisco for 8 years and despite meeting very different people from all walks of life, some great, some rather shitty, and despite California being another world from anything even remotely like back east, I have NEVER encountered the sheer asinine catty talk that these characters portray to each other. I don't speak to people like that, I don't know anyone who talks to each other like that, and I would never tolerate it from anyone. The passive- aggressive douche bag attitude the way this series uninteresting characters portray is a complete turnoff.
Attitude is cute when you're young but sad and pathetic when older and most people would find it unacceptable. I found none of the main characters interesting, memorable or even remotely likable. I did not relate to any of them.
I get what Andrew Haigh was trying to do and the message of being honest he was trying to convey. I really do. Other than one episode in season 1 that caught my attention where guest star Julia Duffy brilliantly portrayed Patricks' mother, Looking was filled from beginning to end with badly written inconsistent story lines, two dimensional characters and unrealistic people. It didn't work in the series nor in the movie.
I'm a huge fan of Daniel Franzese and Jonathan Groff, but sorry guys, there are better stories out there. You should get together with playwright J. Julian Christopher and producer D.R.Knott as these two people are brilliant and have written excellent material.
Skip this. Queer As Folk or The L Word are way better.
Jenny's Wedding (2015)
a good film for any parent of a gay child to watch
I want to first of all, thank Katherine Heigl for her bravery in doing this film. I enjoyed it.
One of the best lines said in this movie that any gay person can understand :
"Mom, you can pretend all you want that nothing has changed, but I have. And I am not lying about who I am to anybody ever again not even for you. Because if I do, I'll ruin what is good in me. You raised me to do the right thing and be proud of myself. Don't you want me to be that person anymore? The lying is over. You and dad are going to have to make up your minds about me because I am getting married, and I am going to have children I am going to have a happy and full life and I'm NOT hiding it anymore. So if you can't handle that it will have to be your problem from now on, NOT MINE." -end quote
American Sniper (2014)
Great acting and directing-too bad it's propaganda.
I give Bradley Cooper and Clint Eastwood a hats off for a great film however, let's remember that Chris Kyle was soldier following orders, and he was a troubled man. He is the symbol of propaganda being used by the corporate-owned media in cahoots with the military industrial complex war machine in this country that continues to spread misinformation, misery, hate and destruction around the globe for sensationalism, greed and profit. Eastwood does not confront that hypocrisy nor does he confront the PTSD many soldiers face after returning from war and our government's apathetic attitude towards those who served our country. Heartbreaking to know that Chris Kyle's memory is being used to perpetuate that lie.
The film Syrianna with George Clooney perfectly reflects the reasons of why the United States is in the middle east. Liberation and Freedom has NOTHING to do with it.
August: Osage County (2013)
if you think your family is screwed up .
WOW. Simply incredible.
I've seen many movies that deal with dysfunctional people but never something quite like this. Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are simply nuts. Their performances blew it out of the park.
Speaking only for myself, the relationship between Violet and Barbara is exactly the way my mother and I were once. I found myself relating to Violet's daughters, little Charles, and even with his father. I found everyone else to be despicable. It just goes to prove to me that not everyone can be or should be a parent.
Overall, the film it was hard to watch. It hit close to home in fact. Violet drove her family away. Even though the film ended with Barbara driving off into the sunset assuming back to Colorado, you know that Violet dies with only the caregiver and possibly Mattie Fae by her side. Her children were not present.
The same mistakes the mother did to her children for me it was as if I were an outsider looking at my own parents and their failures.
I HIGHLY recommend this film to anyone.
Looking (2014)
Nice try HBO
nice try HBO, but if I wanted to watch pretentious bullshit on TV I'd tune in to keeping up with the Kardasians. None of those media whores trying to pass off as a family have any talent, but are very entertaining regardless.
Showtime's Queer As Folk as extreme as it was aired 14 years ago from 2000 to 2005 and was way better even on the first episode. I even related to one of the lead characters named Brian because our upbringing was very similar. There's a reason why Showtime was a leader because they forged ahead and were brave and why some of that network's programs are appearing on Netflix.
I guess HBO still is too afraid to air something that is normal as the very air that we all breathe. Besides that, when are you going to show the true depictions of real men varying in all sizes instead of just the pretty buff clean cut gym boys? Where are the bearish men? Where are the normal looking guys? I don't identify with any of these people.
Other successful gay web series are "Where The Bears Are" written by Joe Dietl & Ben Zook or mini-series "BULK" created J. Julian Christopher. WTBA is a light hearted comedy series not meant to be taken seriously, yet still provided laughter and entertainment. Bulk was a little more serious, engaging, and well-written, and I actually related with a couple of the characters. Both of these series were created using very small budgets and everyone looked like they had a great time filming.
It goes to show that Hollywood still DOESN'T get it : What they show on TV does not represent real people. They represent what looks good on camera.
Sorry HBO, not impressed.
Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011)
Interesting.
I just finished watching on Netflix streaming. Ayn Rand had a very dystopian view of government and governing institutions which worked very well in portraying them as the enemy of business in her novel now transformed 58 years later into the 1rst of 3 films with the other 2 scheduled to be released in 2013 and 2015. While I find that the movie is well-acted and the visuals fit well to the story some of which had to modernized for 2016, I'm going to read the novels to truly understand why her views of "selfishness as a virtue" (narcissistic, histrionic, and antisocial personality disorder) sociopath way of thinking came to be a powerful driving force within many conservatives in politics today.
The Expendables (2010)
I am impressed.
Hell Yeah. Now this is Sly Stallone at his finest with great casting. To bring together an amazing cast putting aside the egos and making an amazing action film is the Stallone I grew up watching since I was a kid. He was one of my heroes growing up. And like us all, he's human and not perfect. None of us are. When it comes to music, film, or a book, story is everything to me. I won't spoil it for the readers, but if you happen to love action films, this is a must see. Stallone, if you happen to be reading this please make another sequel and bring the same principal leading cast together again. It is great seeing you again and all of your fellow action stars together on screen.
