Crossing Bhutan (2016)
You tube quality documentary
I expect all the good reviews are associated with this film or its makers in some way.
How can wax poetical about a 60 minute film documenting a fairly unadventurous journey involving 4 middle class Americans who are more interested in making progress than appreciating where they are?
The low point had to be organising a TEDx event in Bhutan. I think that just about sums it up.
Eye of the Needle (1981)
Confused by all the rave reviews
I'm amazed that this movie gets such good reviews on Amazon and IMDb. Its a real turkey. Production values are all over the place. Some big period sets, and some laughably bad ones. The scene of the boat in the storm looks like something from Airplane.
The first half rips along as if they are trying to cram a mini series into one episode. The second half is far too drawn out. The acting and direction is completely wooden. The score is also completely overblown. Donald Sutherland seems to specialise in these turkeys.
It feels like 1st year film project. Some of the edits are terrible! I can't believe it doesn't have more negative reviews. Maybe there are lots of Star Wars fans (same director as return of the Jedi). Totally corny and forgettable.
Elysium (2013)
Rubbish
I loved District 9 - and everything that I had seen Matt Damon in, so I really wanted to like this. But its boring, the dialogue is wooden and the story line weak.
Somehow I felt like I was on the set of the film - rather than immersed in the story.
The metaphors are very crude. There is insufficient time spent on the Elysium satellite to make it seem real, the factory owner is a pantomime villain.
I almost left before the end. And what has happened to Jodie Foster? She was terrible too!
