Portal Runner (2021)
Worth the time.
This was a fun movie which made me wanting more. The acting was great and it had a great juxtaposition between its horror, and its comedic beats sprinkled throughout the film.
This is definitely a great young adult horror film. Kudos to the makers for their lack of unwanted profanity and over the top violence.
My only critical hits on the film is the odd soundtrack, and the desire to have more explained in the story. The film felt very short as if the plot could continue on.
It is obviously an independent film. But for what it was, I give it high praise. I have seen all the other actors excluding Elise Eberie, in other works and I love them all. I'm glad to see Sloane Morgan Siegel starting to mature in his acting roles, and I will never miss a project starring or Co-Starring actor Brian S. Lewis.
Keep up the good work everyone.
Wind (2011)
Excellent work for a low budget student film.
Even though it's obvious that half of the actors aren't proper Chinese, They pull it off quite well. The story takes the Kung Fu genre and works it into an almost western and romantic feel. The set up is nice and to the point. The set dressing is very good and feels quite authentic. It is quite amazing what they did on the budget they were working with. Spitler is able to work the actors and the camera with finesse. The graphics for the blood is a little unreal, but it is still quite good and used in a way where it doesn't distract from the plot or the action. The film made me wish there was more. It feels like it could be a short scene from a longer film, but it still wraps up the story quite nicely. It is a fun little film and worth the watch. I can't wait to see more from this director in the future.
Lang shan die xue ji (1936)
One of Fei Mu's more interesting pieces
This film is best when one understands the full background of it.
Fei Mu once said that the story of Blood on Wolf Mountain was so simple that it could be told in two lines or less. But besides the simple telling of a story it is the way the story is told and the deeper meaning behind it. In 1936 The Lien Hua Film Company got to together and made a goal of making a film that would promote China and still have it pass the censor boards. During this time the Japanese had started to take a hold on Shanghai and the film industry.
The film was about a small village that is repeatedly attacked by local wolves. Within the community there are two factions. One are the older generation that say the more one fights the wolves the more they attack you, and then there's the other faction that says the only way to get rid of the wolves is to kill as many as possible before they take over the whole land. The film was written with the connotations that the wolves were the Japanese that were slowly making their way into China. Before the film went out they labeled it with a much milder name of "Brave Hunters". When the film went before the censor board the Chinese officials could sense that the wolves represented the Japanese, but decided not to say anything until they saw the reaction of the Japanese officials. The Japanese Officials either didn't notice or didn't think that the wolves in the film represented the Japanese and their threat to China and allowed the film to pass.
When watching it is fun to keep this in mind as they talk about how evil the wolves are.
