War Stories (2009)
War Stories Delivers a War to the Conscience
When I first lined up to see WAR STORIES, I didn't know what to expect; that's the joy of watching independent films! And frankly, I'm surprised this hasn't been featured in any other festivals besides the one down in Asheville. Sure, we've all heard the premise "What if everything you knew changed?", but WAR STORIES handles it in quite a different manner. To post how would be spoilerific; however, I can say that the plot twist towards the end of the film is dramatic and unsettling, because it very well could happen. The film makes one empathize with the main characters, for they're quite well-written.
Whitman's cinematography is beautifully done; most of the acting is spot-on (with the main characters at least); and the music does carry some lasting appeal, especially since (mind you) this is an independent film; and best of all, the film keeps your attention, running close to two hours. My only qualms with the film apply to the delivery of some minor characters' lines and the mother's appearance hardly changing after a time transition during the first fifteen-or-so minutes. Where can I find a plastic surgeon like hers? She doesn't even have a wrinkle after raising a son into his teenage years!
