Das Boot (1981)
Noise, chaos and predictable
I was amazed at all the reviews that say this movie was great. I found it boring, repetitive, noisy and pointless. How many explosions do you need? You get the point in the first 30 minutes. Men sweating, shouting, water leaks etc etc etc. If you have seen a submarine movie you have seen them all. Trust me. There is only so much you can get from sub movies and that is why there is so much repetition. Showing the crews faces over and over again as they mumble incoherently gets old fast.
The movie is way too long and you know what going to happen before it happens. I would not invest time in this unless you just like noise and explosions.
Signs (2002)
Missing the whole point
I watch science fiction as a form of escapism. I do not watch these movies to test my intelligence. I do not care if there are parts of the movie that do not make sense or are not logical. I enjoy the ability of the movie makers to be creative and to challenge my imagination. The bad reviews of this movie are missing the whole point of science fiction. To begin with there have never been or ever will be "aliens" so why do you even watch an "extraterrestial" movie and pick it apart to begin with? These bad reviews are what don't make any sense.
This movie has it all. Sit back, relax and let your imaginations run wild and this movie with it's effects are very entertaining. For the people who want accuracy I recommend a good class in quantum physics.
Reap the Wild Wind (1942)
Paulette Goddard out of control - not a sea adventure!
The first hour and a half centers around Paulette Goddard screaming, yelling at everyone, breaking and chopping things up and being very annoying. I have no idea how this won an Oscar. Far too much boring dialog. I was expecting a sea adventure down on the Florida keys with beautiful big sailing ships with great scenery. What you get is a lot of chaos on deck and meaningless chatter below deck. When you consider the budget, actors and atmosphere the potential was there. The last half hour finally gets going mostly because Paulette Goddard calms down. I am no expert movie reviewer but I know a good movie when I see one. I cannot and do not recommend this movie. A major disappointment.
China Clipper (1936)
Classic film especially for aviators
This is a great and exciting movie especially if you are a pilot as I am. It reflects a time in aviation that was exciting. Those days are gone forever. I would have enjoyed travel in those flying boats not to mention piloting them. I am from Miami and remember Dinner Key. Those flying boats parked in the bay looked so magnificent with the cumulus nimbus clouds over the Atlantic in the background. I recorded this movie years ago and watch it from time to time and I always enjoy it's vintage scenes. Those great flying boats were magnificent and I can only imagine the joy and sense of adventure flying around the west and south Pacific island hopping! It is true escapism. I highly recommend this movie.
