Great!
5 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is a re-make of the 1978 classic 'Day of the Woman'. Now with a name as sinister as 'I Spit On your Grave', the movie was bound to attract controversy. The original 'Day of the Woman' itself was a very controversial movie with it receiving bans initially upon it's release in many countries. Now I am a violent movie fanatic. I like gore, horror, chills and blood in my movies. I started up with this movie with a lot expectations. Some were fulfilled, some weren't.

The thing that stands out the most is the acting. Not only Sarah Butler (who does a phenomenal job) but the whole cast acts very well. They make the movie seem very real. The second thing is the ambiance of the setting where the movie is filmed. The woods, the lonely cabin... it all adds to the realism of the experience that is 'I Spit on Your Grave' The directing is nice too. No out of the world shots but it is adequate. The dialogs seemed a bit to generic. But this are little nit-picks, let's get down to the things that this movie is known for. The explicit rape and torture scenes of Jeniffer Hills and then the scenes of the revenge.

The rape scenes seemed pretty well played. They were too in-depth and disgusting. The rape and torture scenes went on for about 20mins and I guess that's what is controversial about the movie. I was astonished by it but that wasn't what I watched this movie for. I watched it for Jeniffer Hill's revenge.

The revenge scenes were great. The film let my expectations down on the violence and gore front. I expected more blood but I was let down. But what's good about this scenes are that they are gruesome. The way she takes her revenge is disturbing. Especially the final two. The movie's violence does not hold up to movies like Cannibal Holocaust or Men Behind the Sun but it's adequate. It's done nicely and for an average movie watcher, the movie will be down right disgusting.

Overall, it's a great movie for people who like this kind of stuff. It's listed as horror but it isn't. There are no scary/spooky scenes. It's more about the torture, the violence... so if you are in house for some chills then this isn't the movie for you. It's great for what it is. A cult classic and rightly so. Now I am trying to obtain the 1978 version to see if it can surpass this one on the violence front!

Dead End (I) (2003)
6/10
Pretty decent horror flick.
3 May 2011
Dead End's plot goes something like this --> A man on his way to his relatives for Christmas takes a shortcut from his usual route. This turns out to be the biggest mistake he makes in his life. That's the plot. That's it! Now it may seem shallow but it's far from it. Once you start up with the movie and watch it till the end, you'll find that plot is more than enough to hold the movie together. It also creates the mystery setting of 'What will happen at the end?!' All in all though, this movie is pretty average. There are not many scares. The direction is pretty good. The dialogs are average. Acting is okay. The cast is more than capable.

The main reason it gets low ratings from me is because the plot, though enough to hold the movie together, is still shallow. It needed something more to spice it up. The second reason is that there are very less scares; something you want abundantly in a horror movie. The atmosphere too is not very spooky. A dark road surrounded by woods... over-done in the horror genre.

If you are a horror movie buff, then this won't be good for you but if you are an average movie watcher and planning to watch a minimally violent horror movie with your family than this is a good pick.

Two and a Half Men (2003–2015)
8/10
One of the best shows airing today...
1 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Two and a Half Men... oh man it's been on air since almost 8 years. 8 seasons past and it's still as amazing as it was. I don't know how a person comes up with such an idea and keeps on going strong for such a long period of time. I actually picked up on the show when the 7th Season started and I got all the previous seasons and started watching from the beginning. I was almost sure that by the time I reach the 7th season, the show would be boring. I mean look at How I Met Your Mother... another popular sitcom which has crapped out.

This show is nothing less than legendary. The main character of Charlie Harper and the equally important yet almost completely different character of Alan Harper combine to create an environment full of laughter and clever satire. It effectively portrays modern society. Charlie Sheen is brilliant as Charlie Harper. Jake played Angus is great too though he has gotten a bit stale since of late.

The dialogs have been the bane of this series since it's inception. The way Charlie adds humor to every situation is hilarious. The moment Alan speaks something emotional, it's guaranteed that Charlie has something of his own to counter it. The script has been and is brilliant.

Overall, this show is great. 8 seasons and still going strong. It's sad that now the episodes don't air regularly as they used to before.

Insomnia (2002)
8/10
It's Christopher Nolan directing it, what do you expect ? Brilliance!
19 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This was the first mass known movie made by Nolan. It was a follow up to his debut film, Following which I have yet to see. Nolan is known to make thrilling, brainy and twisted movies like Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight and the new masterpiece, Inception. This was the beginning of brilliance that would just keep going uphill. Insomnia is a movie with an intense plot, great acting and amazing direction.

Al Pacino and Robbin Williams are spot on with their acting. Al Pacino is one of the best actors out there. Robbin Williams is no less either. Al Pacino's dialog delivery is spot on and his emotions are portrayed perfectly. Even Hillary Swank does a great as Ellie Burr.

The direction is great. Of course it's not the same masterful direction which Nolan will do later in his hits like Prestige and Inception but you can see his talent here. A few aerial shots in the beginning and the underwater shot in the chase scene are great. The plot is nice too. It's not as twisted as Memento or Prestige but it evokes immense emotion and shows what really guilt is and what people can do to hide their mistakes.

Overall, it's an awesome movie and definitely worth a watch!

The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019)
9/10
My favorite sitcom!
19 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most hilarious and brilliant sitcom that I have seen. Amidst all the generic and repetitive sitcoms airing today, this one stands out tall! Chuck Lorre and Bill Praddy have created an amazing show which is loved and appreciated world wide and for a good reason. This is one of the few shows that get's better with unlike most others which just deteriorate. Chuck Lorre is an amazing producer and his brilliance is visible in full galore on this show!

The script and dialogs are the bane of the hilarious comedy that this show integrates. The other major part is of the acting. Jim Parsons is the stand out actor of the cast. He is perfect for his almost robotic doctor-cum-geek outfit of Dr. Sheldon Cooper. His dialog delivery is unlike any I have seen while his facial expressions are mind blowing too. Kaley Cuoco also plays her part very well. Another mention would be of course Johny Galecki as Dr. Leonard. Almost the whole cast is up to par.

The plot is actually pretty straight-forward with a few twists at unexpected moments but the plot is not what makes this show great, it's the humor, the dialogs and the environment that it creates. Sure the whole geek image is portrayed a bit over the top but it adds to the charm.

Give it a try once (Season 4 starts in September!) and you will never be able to stop watching it. It's so funny that tears will be running down your cheeks! Fun is guaranteed!

3 Idiots (2009)
8/10
One of the best Bollywood movies!
18 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
3 Idiots is a fantastic combination and fusion of comedy, drama, suspense and an unconventional romance. Director Rajkumar Hirani has shown his brilliance and lead actor Aamir Khan displays his amazing acting talents. The movie's base concept is taken from the Indian novel 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat, which in itself is quite noteworthy.

The plot of the movie is very unique and sets itself apart from hordes of other, generic Bollywood movies releasing today. I actually do not prefer to watch a lot of Bollywood movies but when something as brilliant as this comes along, I don't have a choice! The plot grabs you and keeps you tuned till the last minute. It's full of suspense too and has two time lines running in parallel.

The main climax of the movie will definitely surprise you but the standout points of the movie are it's comic scenes and dialogs and the message it gives out. The comic scenes are actually funny and will make you laugh out loud while not being stale and generic. The message it gives out about the education system pertaining in India today is spot on and accurate! And everyone wonders why it is a favorite amongst us students! The acting is top notch too and surprisingly even Kareena Kapoor acts decently! The standout actors are Aamir Khan for his role as Rancho and Boman Irani for his role as the crazy director of the college, Viru Sahashtra Buddhdev. He is one of the main reasons to see this movie! So there you have it folks. A movie which achieves great heights of success and is popular too. You don't have a lot of stuff which is qualitatively good and quantitatively known! Superb direction, plot, dialogs and acting. This movie is worth more than just a single watch!
