Spoiler tag because I briefly touch on the tone of the ending without going into any specifics. Don't read this review if you don't want to know what kind of tone the ending is.
I love my survival situation movies, I also enjoy them just as much when horror is involved. What I didn't love was suffering through this overly depressing movie.
I probably would have enjoyed it more if there was at least a payoff at the end, but no, that just had to be depressing too.
I get it. I enjoy the premise behind it. I enjoyed the acting and characters and I enjoyed the plot. It just goes too far, too often and doesn't reward the viewer for suffering through it.
I'm not going to go give it a stupidly low rating because there is still a lot of redeeming factors to this movie, but it's just not for me and that should mean something from someone who even enjoyed The Mist despite it's similar tone.
If you are into torture porn with absolutely no payoff though, you'll probably enjoy this a lot more than I did.
