Sweet Country (2017)
Weak and boring
The only thing that rang true was the fact that Sam was eventually killed. As that was definitely what I expected. Everything else seemed inaccurate for the time. It was so painfully slow I won't bore you with the details as others have covered it in their reviews.
$9.99 (2008)
bad enuf to turn me off this director forever
I saw the film at a packed out cinema during the Sydney Film Festival. I have nothing good to say about this film. The characters were very low quality animation, hideous to watch for nearly 2 hours but I stayed. Luckily I am a huge fan of Altman as somehow his film 'Short Cuts' 1993, is mentioned in the promo for this film and my immediate thought after seeing the film was 'can I ever watch Short Cuts again without thinking of this crappy film.' Simply a vehicle for weak and meaningless cracks at religion with a pitiful gratuitous sex scene thrown in and it evoked very little of the ordinary life in the characters which was my expectation from its advertised linking of Short Cuts. Maybe they meant bacon short cuts at the supermarket as that was a huge porky. I unfortunately wasted more than $9.99 on this film.
The War on Democracy (2007)
Predicable one sided view of popular dictators v American democracy
I thought the scenes looked too set up for the camera. For example, the ladies learning to read and write. It seemed that thousands were missing out and only a few are getting any lessons 10 years into the Chavez regime. The shots of Pilger in the interview with the CIA guy - which are usually done when the interviewee has left the scene were really bad. Pilger used the shot of Chavez justifying why millions people live in barrios in such a rich country as "well they don't want to be millionaires - like Americans" and I was left thinking, Well if they educated them they might want more than what they have now" I couldn't see any advantages in sight for these people rely on populist dictators. It is no wonder they escape to Australia and America whenever they can. The film was basically a lot of anti-American slanging off with no hope of change, i.e. sharing the wealth, in store for the people. The countries in the film all go from one dictator to another much like Africa does these days since the end of colonialism and the people just survive. I would prefer to see a film on the subject made by a film maker from one of the countries mentioned. Pilger was very condescending, agreeing with anything the current dictator said. As it didn't include any comedy it only rates a 1 out of 10 from me.
Pure S (1975)
Chasing their next hit
Excellent account of a group of people drawn together in the never ending chase for their next hit. It draws together characters who have just given up, just starting on a path to destruction, people who have already begun a path to crime. Nobody ever considers pulling out they just keep going. The journey includes overdoses, burglary, speed freaks and the blockaid methadone program that became popular in the 70s. The characters seem real and the low quality of the acting only makes them more real. Guys who have to have their hits before the girls, no sex relationships and other reality bites add to the quality of the script. An Excellent film that shows Australians can produce worthwhile films in the drug/road movie genre.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Seuss was a Wordsmith for children...this film is a failure
The writer has completely misread what made Seuss stories worthwhile for children. The producers at Universal Pictures should be more careful. This film is worthless.
